Britney Spears sold more albums than Christina Aguilera because Britney has always been more commercial. She attracts attention to herself when she commits all those scandals and controversial attitudes. But a singer can't be built up only by that. A singer's main basis must be musical and artistic. And Christina with her powerful voice has that requirement. Much more than Britney and her playback.
