Segment producer (in Tim's headphones while he was waiting for John to turn it over to him): "Hey, Tim - we're going to need to kick off with something very encouraging to the American audience - whether it's true or not, just give them something that will keep them on the channel."
Tim (When John turns it over): "Well, you know, John, realistically, any of the Americans have a shot to come home with a medal in the all-around competition . . ."
My insight is better than my hearing, so that's probably where it came from. Producers are constantly talking to these guys in their headphones, and even though WE like watching cause we like the routines, the PRODUCERS are only concerned with keeping us here to justify the advertising rates. (When we watch it on TV, I mean, not youtube.)
If Dominique could have stayed healthy and kept a good attitude till she was 18, she might have turned into one of the best gymnasts the world ever saw. Even in 96 she was brave, determined and passionate. I don't think she really cared what event she started on. She totally tackled the beam.
I completely agree. I'm a guy, but I always want to start with Pommel Horse since if I do it last, I have all the pressure not to fall off the horse, and I do. D= stress sucks LOL.
hollyy crappp to kerris anklee! it was huugee! OUCH. that sucks for kerri that she cant compete because of her anklee=/ but at least they got firstt because of it so...she must at least have a good feeling[:
NBC put too much of a drama spin on it though, and so featured gymnasts with a story rather than the actual contenders. Lilia seems like an afterthought in it, and Khorkina and Huilan aren't even mentioned even though they had a better chance of medalling than most of the others featured.
@Simba85 I think they just had a limited amount of time and a lot of people to cover.Lilia and Huilan both received their own individual fluffs later on. Khorkina wasn't nearly as famous as she would be four years later. As good as she was here, I think she reached her peak in 2000 (kind of incredible considering how old she was) at that point, they certainly gave her a lot of attention. I think she had at least two maybe three fluffs in 2000.
@HJA1982 They really are tho. Look how young they are and imagine being in that position with cameras and millions of people watching you. It's pretty much war. A different kind but the same idea and the possibility of death.

Whatever happened to gymnasts today, that they can barely keep themselves up on the apparatuses because of their heavy bodies?I mean Bela Karoly used to control the girls' meals and that's why they were so slender and elegant, like Khorkina today.Nowadays all you see are muscles, big legs, think napes, ugly shoulders..like all the american gymnasts and produnova of russia. What is wrong with them?Is there something that makes muscles develop more in some athletes and less in others?
Yeah! She's the most complete gymnast ever! She could tumble and dance (OK, maybe not like Irina Baraksanova but still) Plus she had good form and of course, the best vault ever! Her bar routines were good too. Hail Produnova! ;D She was the dare devil of gymnastics
@KarenLovesGymnastics since there were so many great gymnasts, I don't know if I would say that she was the most complete gymnast ever because the competition is really stiff, so many good choices to pick from. But Produnova was definitely one of my favorites. She had a style all her own that was just magical. I was sad that she only got to go to one Olympics, and did not have the opportunity to earn more Olympic medals.
@Darkangel127 yeah. All four members of that 2000 Russian dream team were good at all 4 apparatuses, which is usually the hallmark of the best all-around gymnasts, but there was something special about those four. The each had something special. I wish that all of them could have competed in the all-around. Hang that rule about only three gymnasts per country. Now it's only two. They should change it back.
Yes it's inherent in their body type, and also how you train them. Do you train gymnasts to bulk up? Very rarely. You usually train gymnasts to use the muscle they already have, and in the process sometimes you grow muscle.
1996 was such a golden year in gymnastics!! So many great athletes, and I can remember the Olympics like they were yesterday! I was only 13 at the time, but those memories have really stuck with me :D
Lilia deserved this title. She was so consistent throughout the entire Olympics, and when crunch time came, she stepped up. As a fan of American gymnastics, I would have loved for Shannon or Dominique to win it, but I still love that Lilia ended her career on the highest of notes.
I always loved the fact that Lilia Podkopayeva won this AA... She the most superior gymnast of that time. Even if both Shannon Miller and Domonique Dawes didn't fall, Podkopayeva would have still won... So there's none of this excuse of... "If Shannon hadn't fallen..." So i'm glad Podkopayeva won...
@Dunntosh I totally agree. no one else got a 9.887 on fx here. It may have been the highest score in the entire Olympic women's competition, and I think she did it twice. I could be wrong, but didn't she get the same score in the floor finals? She was always so beautiful, elegant, and consistent.
@gutsfinky yes it was cheesy, but we loved it!! it was the 90s. The music is pretty.
this brings back so many memories! !except now it's even better. I have most of these competitions on tape, except these tapes are old and missing some parts of the competition.I also love seeing what other people have to say. It's like watching it with a whole bunch of gymnastics enthusiasts :-)
great ub routine for dina. she deserves alot more credit and i agree that they talk too much about sveta and need to recognize dina. i am tired of seeing her not win a medal. shes a great gymnast.

I'd prefer to start off on beam. Get it out of the way. Far better than finishing on beam...
lokienvy 2 years ago
I agree. Finishing on beam sucks. It's my worst event, and the most stressful, so having it last makes me think about it the entire competition.
