Had a wonderful dynamism - from a whisper to a powerful reach - he had what maybe Roger Miller captured too - but Lefty's voice was more controlled..from what I have heard. GREAT!!
Only 18 and loving this stuff respect im 33 and been into it for ten years or so Ray price, George jones, Waylon jennings, Moe bandy, Loretta lynn the list goes on!
Ya. Lefty was one of my favorite artists when I went from pop to country in the early 50s. I saw Lefty at Johnny Ryan's Hillbilly Park on South Broadway in St. Louis back around 55. I must add a few others from Lefty's era to the list of what was good country singers - Carl Smith, Faron Young, Web Pierce, Ray Price & Hank Snow,
THIS is country music. I agree with what Harlan Howard said once. "Anybody in Nashville who doesn't know who Lefty Frizzell was, should be run out of town." God bless you for posting this video.
I've loved Lefty for years. His unique voice and style are what really great country music is all about. I am finding more wonderful songs by him here on YouTube - some I had never heard before . His love songs are pure magic for me. Whether listening to him on the radio or watching him in the videos he just sounds awesome. My favorites are "She Found the Key" and "Yesterday Just Passed My Way Again". I listen to those regularly. He never recorded a song I didn't like. Thanks. - Paula
I don't think he is underrated, he is regarded as one of the top ten country singers. Thats where he belongs. He must have been drunk on during this recoding?
as I recall: Lefty served time in NM for statutory rape. He was young, but the girl was just a little bit younger. Her parents found out and pressed charges. Lefty wrote 'A thousand ways' while in jail to let his wife (and baby) know that he would prove he was there for them. REAL Country music is love, heartache, and loss. this song is proof that there's no better way to write about them than to live them. Happy Birthday, Lefty (3/31/28). There will never be another like you...
modern singers dont have distinctive voices they sing everything up tempo and usually the music drowns them out anyway we will nener see the like again unless they slow down a bit
He had the most awesome voice. Only Merle Haggard comes close to him. He has 2 other brothers, one of which is a Christian. Go and check out (THE OTHER BROTHER) on Myspace.
I may be in the minority but, to me, Lefty sounds fantastic here with both of these songs. He's putting a lot of heart and soul into them, just as he said he loves to do. Where would we be without this wonderfully talented artist who set the pattern for many others to follow? Lefty's voice has always been so mellow and so pleasant. I love him. Thank you for posting - Paula
@PaulinaRena -your right about his style setting a pattern. George Jones credits his vocal style to Lefty. Lefty was the first to bend and twist notes in this fashion. Hank Williams did it some, but not like this. Lefty is a true legend. I wish they would call the stuff radio plays today something else, because it surely isn't Country Music.
Now that's old school true country music-cuts right through to your heart. No frills bells or whistles, guitar, steel guitar , fiddle and a pure voice.
It would be so nice to hear some of this real country music again on the radio, a real differential from anything rock and roll. Seems there is so much gray area anymore in country music, it is tiresome.
The greatest two-chord country song of all time. Can you see how Lefty is already fading at this point, not only in his voice, but in the overall sadness of his delivery. It's the tragic essence of country music. There's absolutely no one like him since. He's the end of an era. A genius, no less than Einstein was in mathematics. His impact is immeasurable.
Although he does them both in the same style, he's singing two songs here: first, "I Love You A Thousand Ways" and then "I Want to Be with You Always."
You're right about the first song, but the second is called "I want to be with you always." It's just that he sings two songs in this clip. Both great.
He influenced many great musicians, I remember listening to his wonderful songs growing up because my Dad is a big fan of the old Country and Lefty was a favorite, they broke the mold with musicians like Lefty, he was awesome.
I have been in Wheeling, over 30 years ago, and I loved it. Being from Alaska and, to be able to see that part of the country. Met some wonderful loving people from there.
I truly enjoy these "Oldie but Goodies" type of music.
I also saw Lefty, backed up by a local band in a small club in 1965 . Very cordial and generous with his time - completely immersed in his songs and his vodka but still put his songs across with all that feeling and on pitch. I'll never forget that performance.
I met Lefty in a Lafayette, LA dance hall in 1969. He was traveling alone and using house bands. We both arrived an hour before anyone showed up and I had a half hour to talk to him. Wonderful memory.
Sadly Lefty went out of this world a forgotten man, His life from what I hear, was not to happy the last few years. It's such a shame, He was such a great talent.
I don't think that Lefty, will ever be forgotten as long as there are people such as myself and others that help keep his memory alive, and his talent still lives on. And, as far as his being unhappy in his last years,I don't think so. He loved to entertain us through his music. At least that is the way I will always remember him. And, I know that he is probably singing in hillbilly heaven.
Thanks for bringing this one back. I remember when I first heard him for the first I was a teenager babysitting. And, I put the 45 on the record player and just fell in love with his twangy voice. I haven't heard this song for well over 20 years.
has anyone heard the studio version where Lefty sniffles just before he starts singing? I think it's the original recording. It's the best version and that sniffle exemplifies what so many artists aren't anymore: HUMAN.
This was my late fathers favourite song of all time........I can see why......Lefty is breathtaking......I can't get enough of this video.......Thanks You so so much!
