What was happened actually? Many brothel owners they were Koreans opened their business next to military gates. It was a natural because they could make more money. This is quite natural. Why do we have to get blamed for the atrocities we've never heard of for 60 more years after the war? We were fighting against the Western colonial rulers in Asian countries, not against ethnic Asian people there. There's no reason for us to kill ethnic Asian civilians unless they took the side of Western rulers and got hostile to us. One exception is ethnic Chinese who took the Western rulers' side and opposed to the independence of the Asian countries they lived in.

Let me repeat again. During WWII there were 242,341 Korean volunteer soldiers and civilian employees serving in the Imperial Japanese Army (Ministry of Health and Welfare of JP). Out of this number, 116,294 were soldiers. You may know that 148 Koreans were convicted as Class-B and -C war criminals by the Allied Nations after the war.

In the report of US Government Archives and Records Service, 1948, it said these girls apparently became comfort girls under compulsion and misrepresentation. And it also shows one example. 15 of these korean women saw the advertisement recruitment in Korea : "we want women for work in a Japanese factory, Singapore" so they volunteered.

What was happened actually? Many brothel owners they were Koreans opened their business next to military gates. It was a natural because they could make more money. This is quite natural. Therefore Japanese military did not open these brothels during the war, but brothels owners who were local people in the countries which Japanese troops were dispatched. Why do we have to get blamed for the atrocities we've never heard of for 60 more years after the war? We were fighting against the Western colonial rulers in Asian countries, not against ethnic Asian people there. There's no reason for us to kill ethnic Asian civilians unless they took the side of Western rulers and got hostile to us. One exception is ethnic Chinese who took the Western rulers' side and opposed to the independence of the Asian countries they lived in.

Let me repeat again. During WWII there were 242,341 Korean volunteer soldiers and civilian employees serving in the Imperial Japanese Army (Ministry of Health and Welfare of JP). Out of this number, 116,294 were soldiers. You may know that 148 Koreans were convicted as Class-B and -C war criminals by the Allied Nations after the war.

In the report of US Government Archives and Records Service, 1948, it said these girls apparently became comfort girls under compulsion and misrepresentation. And it also shows one example. 15 of these korean women saw the advertisement recruitment in Korea : "we want women for work in a Japanese factory, Singapore" so they volunteered.

Japanese government drafted korean for war labor. Drafted women we now call as 'comfort women', thought they will be work in a munition factory. But Japan forced them to sell themselves without any money. This is the main case. Also there were few women who were kidnapped by Japanese police.

Because it was a high-risk, high-return buisness. Those women were certainly on business and used to earn large amounts of money.
BTW, there were over 240,000 Korean volunteer soldiers and civilian employees in the Japanese Army during WWII. If comfort women were so-called "sex slaves", you are saying that those Korean soldiers were the clients of those pitiful women. Why didn't they ask the fellow Korean soldiers to help get out of their sad situation?

In 1945, in depositions of three Korean civilians in the employment of the Japanese Army, they stated “In the battle zones of the Pacific War, the Korean comfort women we met were all either volunteers, or women who had been sold by their parents. If any of the women had been victims of coercion, all Koreans, young and old, would have risen up in rage, regardless of whatever retaliation, and killed the Japanese.”

Thank you for this video. I'm guessing this was a school requirement. I'm glad that not all people have forgotten these heinous crimes. It was hard growing up and seeing my grandparents and everyone in their generation cry whenever we asked about WWII. There were, and maybe still are, many Philippine comfort women waiting for justice. I know for countless women, it may be too late, but I hope their families keep their torches going.

I know that many Korean militarymen fought bravely in order to protect their country in 1950-53. They were not cowards.
Many of them have been educated by Japanese, and in a position to know what Japanese army did to comfort women.
Why such brave worriers did not get angry with it, why they did not stand up against Japanese before 1945 ?
It was because Japanese army never coerced Korean girls to be comfort women. Everybody knew that comfort women were prostitutes just worked for money !

We live in a 'post feminist' world where women frequently follow up stmts about their gender status with 'not that i'm a feminist or anything', as if it is something to be ashamed of. Yet historic actions against women still go unmarked & ads for gender neutral products feature sexually alluring women. In most households men drive and women cook & clean toilets.
Gender rights should never be taken for granted. I applaud the makers of this film for their sensitivity & for 'walking tall'.

At "Internaitonal Symposium of East Asian Peace and Human rights" on Feb. 23, 2002, Ms. Kim GuiOk, a professor of Kyungnam Univ. told that ROK Army also built Comfort Stations and allowed Korean soldiers to have sex with Comfort Women there.
By "Off-line History of War" edited in 1956 by Headquarters of Korea Army, there were 89 Comfort women in 4 Comfort Stations in South Korea, and 204,560 times of usage. (Asahi Shimbun, Feb. 24, 2002)

the ppl of today shouldnt be blamed. it is wrong. but these comfort women who suffered should be able to recieve at least an acknowledgement of their suffering. i dont believe that money compensation will take away any of the injustices they suffered. an appology wont make it right, but it would go a long way to healing the pain. at least these women who are still surviving will know that ppl are acknowledging what they went through, instead of being told it doesnt matter what they went through.

They knew what happened in Korea under Japanese rule before 1945. Why such brave Korean worriers did not stand up if their daughters and sisters were taken away by Japanese army ?

I'm doing the Introduction to the monologue 'Say It' in The Vagina Monologues which is about Comfort Women and their plea for the Japanese government to apologize and it sounds like they probably won't.. I am really proud to be part of the efforts of The Vagina Monologues to fight against the atrocities against women!
