I wonder if this is where "The Music Of The Night" came from ,I wonder if this is where the insparation was for the title ,I know Crawford was inspired to do his phantom from Lugosi ,His cape and costume where based on Lugosi with Maria Bjornsons twists ,IS THIS WHERE IT CAME FROM???????
Hey also... check out the cool use of Bela Lugosi soundbite in the intro of the radio podcast FIZZ RADIO BOOGALOO. Here posted on Youtube by 'dangermanic' or just search for 'Fizz Radio Boogaloo'. Like LITTLE STEVEN'S UNDERGROUND GARAGE meets HILARIOUS HOUSE OF FRIGHTENSTEIN. And cool music spun here.
"As I ooked towards the window I saw the first dim streak of the coming dawn
There seemed a strange stillness over everything; but as I listened I heard as if from down below in the valley the howling of many wolves. The Count's eyes gleamed, and he said
'Listen to them-the children of the night. What music they make!'
Seeing, I suppose, some expression in my face strange to him, he added:-
'Ah, sir, you dwellers in the city cannot enter into the feelings of the hunter'."
The actor who impersonates count Dracula, in order to be convincing and leave an impact on the spectaror, has to be three things: scary, timeless, aristocratic. Bela Lugosi managed to be all three, in a masterful balance. Jack Palance was more scary but lacked the gentleman's touch or the aristocratic features, he was too rugged. A certain timelessness has to be conveyed by the actor, so that he looks and sounds and behaves as a man from a vague past time, but without being corny or laughable.
Best Dracula ever! Does anyone remember an album featuring this line (& few others) that had I think Moonlight Sonata also playing? Would have been from early to mid 1990s ... I had a tape, but it is long since gone & I cannot remember who did it. Was very beautiful, in an eerie kinda way.
Dwight Frye is rightly remembered for his insane Renfield,
But his sane Renfield as in this clip deserves to be remembered as well. He had slightly off-kilter reactions to Lugosi, always mild mannered and mindful of his etiquette, but you could really pick up on his sense of unease.
@ScorpiiBuscemi1822 - i agree that lugosi was quite creepy but friendly? well, only in a mysterious way perhaps. i don't think anyone can really say who the best dracula is.
@aewd1980 Well, the way he plays the characters seems like it's someone who would definitely help you out if he wasn't trying to kill you... you know? Maybe friendly isn't the right word. Helpful, perhaps. Something positive, though. You're right, it's hard to say who the best Dracula is - also because there have been so many adaptions - but Lugosi is definitely one of the best - definitely the most memorable (to me).
@aewd1980 I'll google those, thanks. Myeah I didn't really mean Lugosi himself but more like how he played Dracula. He plays him as though Dracula has some sort of good side to him... but very deep down or so. I don't know, I'm pretty bad at describing all this. Anyway, his portrayal of Dracula intrigues me.
@ScorpiiBuscemi1822 - i know what you mean, i find it a bit awkward to express myself on these websites, lol. i thought actors such as klaus kinski and jack palance played the dracula character as to evoke slightly more in the way of pity and sympathy, that they hated having to subject themselves to satisfy their bloodlust etc etc. i'm certain in the films at least, that dracula didn't begin his life as a creature of the night but rather as a nobleman who defended his country.
@ScorpiiBuscemi1822 - are there any other lugosi films that you like, apart from dracula? i saw one called night monster from the 40s. lugosi was limited to a supporting role as he tended to be by then but it was quite watchable.
@ScorpiiBuscemi1822 - no matter. if it's o.k with you, i could recommend the following ones: black cat, the raven, the invisible ray, black friday, murders in the rue morgue, white zombie, night monster, abbott and costello meet frankenstein, frankenstein meets the wolf man etc. lol, a few as you can see.
@LoneTinaja Cool, I also love this line too, I'm 14 and I love this movie, You have my respect old timer(I don't know if it's offensive since I'm from Portugal, if it is i'm sorry xD)

I 1st saw the film in the mid 1950s when I was
a kid. It was scary... & fascinating. As a kid,
Halloween was my favorite holiday because it
was the 1 night of the year where we could
roam far & wide...as the children of the night

is there other ways he says that bec I swear I remember him saying:
"Listen to them, the children of the night, what sweet/sad music they make!"
AngelJuliet 9 months ago
The American Film Institute ranks Dracula's
quote about wolves #83 on their list of the
greatest film quotes. It should be in the top 10.
"Children of the night, what music they make"
is one of the most poetic verses I've ever heard,
whether in film or in print. Don't you agree?

@HySonic - In America it is definitely not
offensive to call someone an oldtimer. On the
contrary, it is a sign of respect & also an
appreciation that the oldtimer has eyewitness
knowledge of historical events. One of the
biggest regrets of my life it that when I was
young I didn't ask oldtimers, such as my
grandparents, as much as I should have
about their lives when they were young.

What's ironic is, Ygor's brain was transplanted into Cheney's Frankenstein. Then Lugosi played the Frank monster in the next film!
