I did a similar flight - from Buenos Aires to Santiago Chile. The pilot said "please return to your seats we are about to fly over the Andes" Such a brilliant view, one of the best to be had from a plane for sure.
Is like Denali National Park in Alaska, where Mount Mackinley is... but this is a flight from Argentina to Chile... both countries are awesome, you must visit them!
Here at The Andes you have the Mount Aconcagua in Mendoza, Argentina, the second highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest in Nepal.
The pyramid-shaped mountain that appears closer at 0:15 is the "Marmolejo" with 6108 meters above sea level, making it the world's southernmost mountain of six thousand meters. Also at that moment begins to fall, behind on the horizon to the left, a large mountain in the distance, which is the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America with 6959 meters.
beautiful shots of some very intimidating mountains. really hard to believe anybody from the Uraguan soccer team could survive, much less hike out of there(I think 2 did for help) nearly 40 years ago
Jesus Christ! This plane is probably cruising at an altitude of 35,000 feet, yet the Andes mountains are right below, not far away at all. Kind of gives you a scary idea of the serious elevation of some of these peaks.
Mount Everest is about 29,000 feet, while the highest mountain in the Andes (Aconcagua) is about 22,000 feet. Both some serious elevations that most people have no concept of.
Well, the tallest mountain in the Andes is Mt. Aconcagua at 22,000+ feet. Mount Everest is over 29,000 feet, a difference of about 7,000 feet. This means that if Aconcagua and Everest were next to each other, you would have to stack about 5 or 6 Empire State buildings on top of Aconcagua to reach the height of Everest.
@MegaAirplanelover "Tall" implies that something is of great height (is very tall itself), while "high" implies that something is sitting at a great height (not necessarily tall itself, but placed very high).
Thus, it seems Mt. Everest is sitting on a very elevated plateau. That's what makes it the "highest" mountain in the world.
By contrast, if you look at Mt. Fuji, for example, you will see that it is tall from the ground to its peak. It is not sitting on a plateau, and not "cheating".
@ejdf870 I guess you are right. I thought that the information, which you have given me about that plateau in your comment, was part of Mount Everest, which was making me realize that Mount Everest stood from the ground.
@MegaAirplanelover Well, it's kind of hard to tell where the plateau ends and the mountain begins.
There are mountain ranges that run for hundreds of miles which are just mountain "tops" that sit on a very elevated plateau. Can any one of those mountain tops claim the plateau beneath it as its own?
This is the reason I want to climb a "tall" mountain, rather than a "high" one. It's much more interesting, and gives you a better sense of scale when you look down from it.
@shubroto81 Yes, I will make that distinction from now on.
I feel that Mt. Everest is "cheating" when it claims the title of highest "mountain" in the world. I am much more impressed with stand-alone mountains that rise from sea level to peak, like Mt. Fuji.
@ejdf870 mt. everest Never claimed to be the highest mountain the himalays are the highest mountains and mt. everest is a peak. I never heard that before that mt.everest was the highest mountain.
Yeah. Its based on a true story about a group of rugby players that get stranded in the andes when thair plane crashes. They survived for just over 2 months by eating the dead pilots lol... 2 of them whent to go get help and it took them 10 days to breech the andes. i'ts a brillient film you should see it. check it out in google just type "alive"

Incredibly beautiful, but also desolate and terrifying. You can't help but think of the Andes Plane Crash.
