still the best game in the series, even after all these years. Lets hope 5 finally surpasses it. Not saying 4 was a bad game, its just that, Vergil's absence was sorely felt.

@DarkSignal59 yeah, I wiped the floor with him too; after like the 100th time I beat the game, first time you fight him its brutally difficult. To answer your question and not be a douche though; the short answer as to why in the plot Dante loses, at least at first, is because Vergil sees himself as a pure warrior, he doesn't believe in guns, only swords. Both Dante and Vergil have equal ability, obviously, but Vergil was more specialized in hand to hand fighting, where Dante mixes it up.

@DarkSignal59 Both Dante and Vergil are 100% pure fighting ability right? Here's the difference; Dante 50% guns, 50% swordplay. Vergil; 100% swords. That is why in a sword fight, unless Dante comes into his own style and mixes it up to an extreme, he will always lose. Dante has no chance against his brother when it comes to swords. I think that was the whole point of the plot, Dante "coming into his own," establishing his own identity separate from that of his father and brother.

@DarkSignal59 Vergil is obsessed with being like Sparda, but has contempt for humanity. Fuck Dante hates his father, that is why he created his own style. Dante's need to use firearms, to mix it up with swordplay, is a rebel thing, he NEEDS to be different from his dad. Vergil is the polar opposite and is obsessed with being a pure demon warrior. As we all saw from the first game of the series, he got his wish.

@DarkSignal59 the game is basically a story about a rebel punk establishing his own identity, and fighting his "lame ass, follows dad's rules" brother. Its a story about one brother wanted to be the "goodie two shoes follows in dad's footsteps," vs the "rebel punk brother who wants to be his own man." The other reason Dante loses, is because where Vergil has a clear sense of his own identity, Dante doesn't, at least not until the end.

@DarkSignal59 the game is pretty psychological dude, it plays with a lot of male psychology. See, for the first two fights, Dante lacks confidence, and he even shows insecurity at the begining of the game. Not knowning to be a demon or a human, but hating his father so much, its like he wants to be a warrior, but not like his dad. See, Vergil doesn't have that problem; mentally he's more together, and as such has supreme confidence.

@DarkSignal59 again though, when Dante finally gets a sense of who he is, that is when Vergil loses. Vergil getting his ass kicked is symbolic of Dante successfully having stepped out of his father's shadow, and really coming into his own. The theme of Devil May Cry 4, mirrors it, there Dante acts as a mentor figure to his great grand nephew Nero, who also has identity issues.

@DarkSignal59 thus, the factors why dante loses are two fold; one, vergil is a swordsman through and through, and specialized skill is often more dangerous in a fight, second, again, having no sense of identity will screw with the way you perform man, in everything. Now, Dante knows what he is, his abilities make that much obvious, only problem is he doesn't know how to establish himself, follow me?

@DarkSignal59 simply put, Devil May Cry 3 is a story about a young man in his late teens becoming an adult, but, becoming an adult establishing adulthood HIS OWN WAY, not following his father. In Devil May Cry 4, he helps out Nero, obviously because Nero reminds Dante of himself.

@StarBrown08 in a weird way, great great grand nephew actually. Dude, it says on the cut scenes of Devil May Cry 4; Sanctus states that Nero "carries the blood of the savior." But is "not in Dante's league." A thousand years before fathering Dante and Vergil, Sparda got freaky with a midieval chick who gave birth to a son, who is Nero's great great grandfather, Dante and Vergil's half brother from 1,000 years earlier, so that makes Nero his half nephew.
