@leonaoffical The number of people appreciating this performance or any other PJ Proby performance has always been limited. You might go for a white singer who was out to prove he could sound like Otis Redding but most of the world didn't want a Redding impersonator covering Redding hits. Proby proved he was nothing more than a versatile mimic. He was never able to maintain a sound of his own across a large number of songs.
@rontenn Faulty hearing you say? I guess Proby just naturally sounds like a black guy from central Georgia with a speech impediment. "Si'in' on the dock of the bay". Funny that he sounds like a white redneck in interviews. Aren't you the guy who posted on another video that one-chord-strumming Proby is a talented guitar player? Who were you comparing him to?
@RocksNoChaser He does not sound like a black guy on this song at all....he sounds like a white guy from Texas. I said on another clip that Proby plays harmonica, piano, guitar & drums. I compared him to no-one in that statement. Proby is Proby.....UNIQUE!
As a whole I think the 1968 Stockholm concert is the best thing Proby ever did. But his attempt to mimic Otis Redding's speech pattern in this song is insulting to Redding fans and to the memory of an icon. Proby has his stock "British" and "Liverpool" accents, his stock "black" accent, etc. His enunciation in this song is a caricature not unlike George Kingfish Stevens. If there were African Americans in the audience I'm certain they were very unimpressed by his attempt to imitate Redding.
@merrysnotproud or like me they would more than likely have been appreciating the song and performance and not stuck up their own politically correct arses as some white people are
One of my favourite songs of all time and the Legend does it beautifully! Mickeslina, I so agree with you about the other entertainers "3 steps behind and watching his back..." Bravo PJP!
This is so good and an ultimate proof of what a master Proby is. To take a song like this one, done by another legend, and doing it not only as good as the original but also doing it in ones own personal style is no simple task, but just what PJ does.
His versatility is almost scarying.
In this period he seemed able to do anything that he choose to do, and always - without exception - in world class.
Every other singer was simply three steps behind watching his back.
His own pERSONAL STYLE. Exactly which style is that gain? The biggest problem this guy had is he went overboard trying to sound like everyone else. Its a strength for a professional demo vocalist but to be a great vocalist you have to find your own place. Honestly he NEVER did. The guy is like a whole karaoke bar all by himself. One minute Elvis..the next Otis Redding...Ect.
Hmm...in a way I can agree with you, and one reason for his demise was certainly that the public never knew what he was going to sound like on the next record, BUT at the same time EVERYTHING that he did he did so good.
His own personal style? OK, it wasn't the best of expressions. I should have written that he always added a little extra.
If you listen to the original versions of the songs he recorded you wil see what I mean.
By the way: what is so disturbing to you with this guy PJ Proby?
In my view & many others this guy P.J.Proby is the most versatile vocalist ever!
