Hanuman must feel pretty jipped right now. The others now stand alongside their ancestors and old allies...and he just keeps getting reincarnated until he's himself again and has to be the Hindu gods' errand boy again.
Did he go back for the helmets and arrow? Or maybe they just appeared from Hammerspace (to borrow from TV Tropes). XD
I remember this was one of the few episodes of this show I ever watched but it's always been one of my favorites. Not a happy ending but it leaves off with a lot of hope. I always thought the butterfly was a nice touch at the end.
why is there a cross? was any of these heroes Christian? hanuman is Hinduism, beowulf is Viking Paganism, the shaman is native religion. the african chick?
@adnelortiz I don't assume he was a Christian, just that pop culture would have him believe that this is how most people show respect. Same as a cross on the site of car crashes.
@chrispollock Beowulf is actually confusing, and in the poem itself the poet puts some Christian sentiments and views into the mouth of Beowulf and others, despite the fact that he insists the characters are all pre-Christian pagans.
as a grown man...i still cries when watching those heroes making their ultimate sacrifice.....this shows is a lot better than most of the current day's educational program....soo much reality and hardship of life hidden within this show =/
Even in death, did this episode push up our emotional walls, speaking to us about races, cultures and even religion the cross at the end. Wow how pathetic did our cartoons get you wouldnt even be allowed to show a tenth of this now adays R.I.P heroes :)
awesome episode! what a way to incorporate philosophy, spirituality and racial unity all in one episode! times have truly changed the cartoon now suck donkey balls this is what i remember waking up to in the morning before school
This was a great show that I wish would come to to dvd or a least become available for download on itunes or XBLA and PSN. The end of this episode was pretty good and definitely one of the few cartoons in the 90's that wasn't afraid to end an episode, much less its first season, on something of a bittersweet ending.
MIghty Max was a cartoon that was not for everyone it taught a lession that death is a part of life and showed that the good guy doesnt always find a way to cheat death in the end,a hard lession to swallow for many.
"Enjoy the few seconds of life which remain to you. I will teach you a thousand subtle shades of pain. A hundred ways to die. Unitl I finally lay your lifeless body at my master's table."
I wish I could find the writers of this show and shake thier hand.
awesome episode I remember when it aired the image of Hanuman's crushed helmet has stayed with me since I was a kid. and the image of the butterfly at the end. powerful stuff. one of the best shows ever.
They need to make a full actual feature film of mighty max and have skull master as the main villian cause you wont see cartoons like this never again!
It never fails, everytime I watch this episode I get teary-eyed--I agree with what some have said already, this episode really is an emotional one. Though what gets me, is in the next episode Max wants to be rid of being the Mighty One--after what he just went through I thought he figured he had no choice. Either way, great great show!
the bit when skullmaster says "until i finally lay your lifeless body at my master's table" at 7.00 -- pretty mysterious! who is skullmaster's master??
When Frank Miller was a child, his parents took him to see 300 Spartans. That was when he learned what it is to be a true hero. To be willing to sacrifice your own life for the lives of others with no thought of recompense. That is true courage.
As a kid, this cartoon, and especially this episode, did the same for me.
There are no cartoons anymore that show the characters willing to go the final mile for what's right.
We may never see the like of this show again. But I still hope.
What I love about this episode is that Max is scared. The writer's really put a lot of thought about how emotional this would be for a kid. It's also so dark. You would never find that in a cartoon today.
@tiki98 Reminds me of the animorphs series. A bunch of kids forced to be heroes, they would have similar break downs like this. But it really instilled the idea of doing what you have to for the greater good. Even if your mind suffers.
Correction on my part, they used the Hindu version that Sun Wukong was based on. Hanuman not Mei Houwang. My bad to those who read the previous comment.
Yeah i love this one. Heroes thats what i we all need, or ispire to be. Who says T.V. rots your brain? It depends on what you watch. Shows like this gives you life lessons, but this show is one of many. Watching this makes me feel like I'm fifteen again lol.
You can say that again. The 90s had the best cartoons of all, even better than the 80s. From the way I see it, alot of 90s shows seemed to have more life lessons than any other cartoon era.
Anyone else notice then the monkey king says "Stay on the highground, let the other guy do the work for you" well, he doesn't say the second part, Max is having made-up flashbacks =D
This is the only episode of "Mighty Max" I distinctly remember. Even like 15 years later I remember the Magnificent Seven and how they traveled into the jaws of death to face Skullmaster. So glad I found this to take me back to my childhood.
this was the best cartoon ever. the 90's definately were the best era for cartoons in my opinion. now adays its just anime cartoons that make no sense at all. back then cartoons actually taught you something or gave you a life lesson but were still entertaining and appealing to kids. mighty max was dope like heroin!!!
