  • Gentoo: physically fit since 2001

  • dingumfCallofDuty:s comment is priceless! It's funny cause he's serious.

  • Why not add -fomit-frame-pointer flag to CFLAGS? Also FEATURES="parallel-fetch" would be useful too.

  • THX

  • hmm.. interesting... but that guy must look like fat ugly nolifer

  • Install Gentoo

  • INSTALL GENTOO

  • READ TUTOS (read and try to start with Arch Linux AFTER go to Gentoo)

  • Man, I want to learn more about Linux... but I started a using Linux a few months ago... This is too difficult... I don't even know where nor how to compile my own kernel...

  • @theif519 It's acutally quite easy once you get your head around it. I never knew how to compile my own kernel but the guys on the gentoo.org forum talked me though it and were really helpful. It's not hard if you can follow procedures and have a decent background knowledge of Linux. On saying that though if you've only been using Linux a few months you might like to get a years worth of experience under your belt first.

  • What the fucking hell, I couldn't even get past stage 1.

  • Dad wars

  • this is apsurd :) i will never install gentoo correct, too much information and knowlage needed :P

  • I always eagerly wait for the new Lunix kernel. When I think of what compilation commands to use I get a huge boner and I ofter masturbate during the compilation. Some time ago I bought a new computer that compiles the kernel so fast I don't have time to cum. So I compile it twice.

  • @z3Ndix Sounds hot.

  • @z3Ndix You stole that off ED right?

  • @MrCadefulp No, I didn't steal. I copypasted.

  • @z3Ndix Touché

  • hello, im a linux noob, i installed gentoo thru virtual box and i got it what do i do now? how do i get to the desktop, i did basicly the same as you. miminal install.

  • @dndepisode67 re-install gentoo again(WARNING Virtual box drivers are different than the desktop)

  • @dndepisode67 Have a look in the install manual. You basically need to emerge your X server and desktop environment. The manual goes through this step by step, it's really easy but time consuming.

  • Fastest gentoo install I ever saw LOL.

  • I like gentoo, even tho I installed it 2 days :D

  • I've tried a few distros, but honestly I love Gentoo so much that I'm thinking about installing it again as another partition so I can just mess around with it without worrying about screwing anything up. Don't let the vid fool you, it's actually pretty easy to install if you know how to follow instructions.

  • Lovely video man. Lovely. I have a quick question if you can answer for me. I just installed yesterday, and during the bootup, everything is 'OK' except my DHCP. It's telling me that the network is not found, or the driver is missing, something to that effect. Do I need to fix a config file, recompile the kernel because I did not include the driver along the way, or is there something else I need to do to fix it?

  • ILIKcp -pETO /etc/resoMOVElv.conf ITMOgentoo/etcVEIT

  • From typing speed I guess you're using dvorak. :P

  • Oh yesss.... I had my fun with Gentoo 3 month at the beginning of my Apprenticeship .. so funny ... when we started we didn't even know Linux but after trying to install a BIND Secondary server for tree months I knew linux from bottom up and top down .... nice way to learn to work with linux! I think! :-)

  • This must be played on MTV like one of best videoclips, ever! =]

  • gentoo is actually really nice . I got it on my laptop.

  • Awesome!

  • Ummm... yeah.

    Looks fun :D

I've been a winfag all my life, i've used ubuntu for a few days, and I'm ready to hit the fast lane for being a *nix expert by installing gentoo. Wish me luck.

  • @disbuylshite gentoo is linux not *nix dumbshit.

  • GENTOO FTW. the best linux distro. TAILORED for your specific hardware. what else do you want?

  • If this was real-time that would be 1337

  • @LinuxBruiser you are pretty dumb

  • wtf... you have to do all that just to INSTALL it?

  • Love the THX intro sound.

  • @edemkrimea. When you say Linux Emulator what you mean exactly?

Gentoo has usability. Also has the fastest boot of all linux distros, kernel config is something that you cannot avoid, has portage with up of 11500 packages and i had never problem using it. Also has flags (BSD too) witch is one of the most important things. To setup Gentoo is not easy but to setup every package settings the flags etc is harder :P

I don't mean that Arch is not good. Just i prefer Gentoo :)

  • what are killer features of Gentoo? Time is no money for me ,but I don't get the power of Gentoo for an average minimalist desktop user

  • Why there is no flash player for Linux 64bit ?

This is Ridiculous!!!! We must do something.

  • @aweinsto 1) I currently run and write this from gentoo amd64 with adobe flashplayer plugin installed(64bit). 2) More current 10.something 64bit version of flashplugin does not exist, thats true. Adobe desided so. 3) We cant do anything, its closed source - ask adobe. 4) And we should not. HTML5 is coming with SVG and VP8 all opensource to do things proprietary flash did before. Yet you may probably miss some flash games. And yet there is Gnash.

  • I was gentoo user

    Now only bsd user!

Stop play with penguins Play with deamons!!!!!!!

  • @Emberskateboard Linux emulator? Do you have any?

  • @dingumfCallofDuty are u retarted?

  • @dingumfCallofDuty asshole. Do you have any fucking idea what's even going on? On that video I mean.

  • Archlinux is my favorite.I got speed and customization.Don't like compiling 'cos I am no geek just an ordinary user.

  • @edemkrimea Archlinux is actually HARDER in maintance than gentoo, breaks more often, lacks many options gentoo offers, and requires equal amount of knowledge to use. Only gentoo installation is harder than arch, but this is only because of gentoo features, which arch simply does not have. Simple makes life very hard some times. IMHO simplicity is less important than usability.

  • Installing gentoo as I speak, so long Windows (relief ...). Had dual boot systems before with Ubuntu and OpenSUSE, but this time I have all the programs to shift to Linux once and for all.

  • gentoo > ubuntu > windows

  • Eh. I tried to do a minimal install of Gentoo once, but it wasn't exactly long-lived. I think I got to compilation of the kernel when I stopped. I've used a completed system before, and yes, it is VERY fast and customizable, but it is time-consuming. Then again, with that in mind, maybe only one-eighth of the install time is actually spent at the keyboard.

I currently use Debian, but I've decided to give Gentoo another try pretty soon.

  • I hate it when people make videos guides (or showoffs) with an English title, with an English, but they don't explain shit in English and on the times that they do, they use a text editor and not their own voice.

Bottom line: Speak in a Language in the video that matches the Title of the Video or get the Fuck out!

  • oh my god!!

  • you rock!

  • I'm so tempted to try Gentoo out! Right now I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and it's not as fast as I want it to be.

  • @Orangez100 I used ubuntu before, try mint (didn't try it) they say it is better than ubuntu or go with opensuse which is also really good (well if you have a bigger resolution than 1650 no idea if it will work for me didn't) but fedora 12 supports my resolution of 1920X1080 and easy to install, Didn't try gentoo, already burned it and might try it soon...

As for mandriva don't try it, :)

  • Alter schwede, respekt hier^^ Wollte das auch machen, aber mit der Netzverbindung die ich hier habe ist das eine Qual, da würde das Stage3 runterladen allein schon ewigkeiten brauchen...

  • im interested on this system, looks a bit complicated but studying the manuals, I think it would be easy to understand.

  • @DeathNotice87:

It is not complicated, if you understand each step.

Prepare space, set networking and up it, get stage and tarball, uncompress it, set system parameters, chroot into it, update system, generate kernel, install bootloader, add software...

  • Dayum, and i thought Debian was complicated. I think i'll stick to Lenny lol

  • VROOM VROOM

  • Good work , i also try install it 2 years ago but no syxxes , maybi i try again .. Good for the dyhards ;))

  • Now, i'm sure i will never use gentoo XD

  • Because you want something specifically tailored to you and what you want your OS to do. If that doesn't fit you, then you wouldn't so you'd choose something different -- that's fine too.

  • @dale456654: sometimes its easier to just install stuff you want, instead of spending days to cleaning crap out. Besides its either very functional and complex or very easy and incapable.

  • @dale456654 This is nothing compared with installing slackware,.....

  • @l2afa slack is good, but with debian don't know... depends on what people like

  • @l2afa

Why? I think it's easier than this.Gentoo has a long installation time(becouse of compiling). How is it in slackware ? (N). It always uses compiled packages... And it's not good for your system performance... Also they've similar installing without blue boxes etc and tools... i tought again that, it's similar to ( gentoo + arch ) ;)

  • @Dale

    Performance

  • you ass put it slower.fucking annoying having to pause it every second....

  • Its a demonstration not a tutorial.

  • ouch

  • Do a real time version. not as a guide but to watch :P to some more good muzix xD

  • Link to song?

    It's remix, right?

  • respect my linux mate ;)

I think about switching to gentoo

  • i heard you have to be kind of good with computers to deal with gentoo. is this true?

  • yep

  • you have to know your hardware... but anyone should be able to install following the gentoo handbook.

  • yeah...

I tried it out, it's kinda hard... If oyu want "gentoo delight" go with arch, there is a installation tut on youtube

  • thank you

  • ok, i did it. this is nice

  • @autonomous2010 openSUSE is pretty friendly

  • unless you're stubborn as mule

after a while any one can become semi-pro at linux

  • And I recommend to learn about Gentoo, because you can make it to the fastest running system ever.

  • WTF is this the real aleph0ne

  • I did a bit newer Version with HD Quality and the actual Gentoo Version (about 1 day old from NOW xD)

you can watch it when you search for

    gentoo minimal install

  • i love how you downloaded from TU Darmstadt, that's like half an hour from where I live :)

  • FOR THE NAME OF HEAVEN, CALL THAT FREAKIN MINIMUM??? WHAT THE???? WOA!!!!

you so gotta make a way to install the whole thing...hahhahahahha o.O

  • Its not as much work as making a complete LFS.

  • i think i know that...isnt it automated :|

  • lol Nope. Nothing is fully automated as that would be way to easy and nobody would learn anything.

You can take the approach of taking your time to learn linux by using a distro like ubuntu or you can dive right into working with linux using a distro like gentoo. lol

  • Uhm,I already have Ubuntu

  • then you took the easy approach. Dont worry though I did too but I am still learning and I am no where ready for gentoo. lol

  • Both you guys, just take the plunge down! :) It's a lot of fun if you're into learning on the fly, cuz that exactly what it is. I didn't really know shit about how Linux worked. Then came Gentoo . . . I still have lots to learn, but it's helped me a ton!

  • Yeah I hate to see what a full custom install involve! I stick to live cd and live usb stick!

  • i finished the installation and it wont allow me to log in it say user name/password incorrect

  • my installation stops at scanning for wd7000...

  • Awesome music. 5/5 Just for the awesome music. xD

  • Awesome! o.o

  • How long does it take to install Gentoo? (Assuming you are properly compiling/configuring software).

  • Basic setup to get the system running (without X and such)? Around 3-4 hours.

  • Depends on the hardware really. I got a fully working system with Xorg and gnome-light in about 3 hours from a stage3 install.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.67ghz.

    2gb ram 800mhz.

  • i got a amd sempron 2.0ghz and 3.5 ddr1 ram and mine finished around 2 hours

  • Hah, I have an amd athlon 1.4 and mine took 5 days. xD

  • why the hell would you tell us your ip address

  • why does it matter? It's just a local address

  • If it was an exterior ip address then hackers can find out 50 miles close to your location and perhaps if they are lucky some family info or an email. If they can find an email then they can trace the email to find out the internal ip address that you registered with and then they can find out your exact location from that ip address. But these days there are not very many TRUE hackers. :-/

  • the ip address was clearly local and that of a router. Why would you put an external ip in tha part of your config? Just looking at it you can tell it is a generic local ip

  • Well the odds of somebody even caring to hack somebody's IP are very slim unless somebody has a grudge on them.

I can destroy somebody's life by using their internal ip of their computer but what would be the point? What would I get out of it?

A good hacker will be very deceptive once they have full access to a computer anything is possible.

An even better hacker will hack from another computer they hacked so they won't get caught.

  • sucks fuckin ass

  • Omg, so cool. I want to know it so fast too. Yesterday i succesfully installed gentoo minimal installation 2008 too, by manual. But it tooks soo long and after that it was compiling 400 packages 15 hours! Before i had installation by gentoo live cd, but it sucks, trust me guys.

  • btw, what application records framebuffer console?

  • it is a vmware machine and he probably just used fraps or the like to record it :P

  • oh god, this is cheesy beyond all belief.

but 5 stars, because I now have a soundtrack playing in my head for every new install or for every time portage corrupts something.

  • nice :-D

  • Ha you have taken the THX theme for the start of your show, funny.

  • turn off POST in your BIOS, and gentoo only takes 9 seconds to load all the way up to the desktop...

  • for a linux noob like me, that looked totally badass. lol.

  • i want gentoo so bad... i don;t understand why they did this for the setup.

  • it is made this way so the os is completely optimized for your computer.

  • There is an installer also if you don't want to build it manually. It's pretty much point and click

  • hi im lookin for a linux distro that has no gui. GUI really pisses me off. i prefer the old DOS feeling. i want to type my term paper using vi or nano editor, i want to download porn using wget -r option,

  • then gentoo is for you...

  • you can use Arch Linux and later move to gentoo

  • Any linux distro is for you. Just make sure to remove any window managers from your default runlevel, and voila!

  • I use linux instead of windows but I dont use gentoo.

Not that there is anything wrong with gentoo. xD

I just prefer puppy linux but I am thinking about going to ubuntu again for a while so I can finish my LFS distro.

I know... I am a geek now. xD But whats wrong with that!?!?

  • not trying to be mean, but that average user in linux uses ubuntu. Going gentoo is true geek. I work on computers for a living and I don't feel like a geek yet. I use arch.

  • Comment removed

  • @LinuxBruiser

    You need to:

    1. Stop being a faggot.

    2. Install Gentoo.

  • @Schnitz1

    1. I have a Gentoo Install with KDE 4 that I did for fun

    2. You need to grow up

  • @Schnitz1 fucking maths dude, I despise those pesky maths

  • @LinuxBruiser lmfao I use Arch as well. But Gentoo is good.

  • @LinuxBruiser Arch Linux is unstable. I've seen geeker than that (LFS is really for geek and it's full VANILLA).

  • @Darkteammadfiz Dude that was a year ago. ATM i'm using slacks

  • @downwiz2 But wouldn't a image viewer be required?

  • to many work for me

    i stay to opensuse

i hope gentoo will in the future create an easy install but i dont see that coming so quick right ?

  • Gentoo now has a LiveCD. The install much, much, easier. Still fully custom. Check it out!

  • It is very easy to use, and much more versatile than most distros.

  • portage is awesome

  • it doesn't make you 1337, and it's not supposed to.

it's for powerusers, geeks, and people who want extreme speed. since it's lightweight and source-based, it runs very fast, and you can configure it any way you want.

  • That was hell of a configuring... O.o

So, in the end, is it worth it? Having everything optimized manually? :?

  • I woud not waste time like that :-D

I would prepare all possible to make instalation fastest.

I like you are crazy master of this instalation :-D

  • nano? wat

  • what about gentoo installation with GUI it's the same right? but more simple....

  • i think gentoo doesnt got any gui installer.

  • the livecd does, but I'm not sure why you would want that...less customization.

  • crap... I did not know the LiveCD limits the customization... damn it!

so... what do I do now? throw my LiveCD away and download some other thing?

I really want to start using Gentoo, I am using Mandriva 2009 at the moment.

  • it's not that bad...i wouldn't worry about it. now you can still customize it with different drivers/components, but it's just a little more work. the livecd still works completely fine, especially if you are a linux n00b, i would recommend it.

  • Also, Gentoo Linux is something anyone can install. Its reputation for being difficult is wrong - it's simply *manual*. Typing in commands to download and compile applications, configuring your kernel, bootloader, filesystem, fstab, etc.

But I think any Linux user should try it just once, in virtualization (kvm and qemu are easy). It is a unique approach for Linux distros. Not for everyone like I say, but remarkably attractive if you "get it."

  • Look a Gentoo Linux install is almost ritualistic - it's a kind of OS kata that anyone can learn (follow the handbook).

It's not Linux from Scratch or anything, but it does allow you, as you see above, to "build" your system. It gives you many simple scripts and apps (portage) to make this possible.

It is not for everyone. But I've been running it since 2002, and I haven't found a reason to switch (and I run many other distros in emulation via KVM).

For my purposes, Gentoo *still* rocks.

  • I hear you! Thank you, finally, FINALLY I see someone saying something that encourages me even more to switch to Gentoo.

  • A typical Gentoo installation takes me 12-18 hours, 8 of it while I sleep, and maybe 2 at the actual keyboard.

This argument continues to fail to impress me.

  • Use a precompiled distro like Ubuntu, Debian, Open SUSE, Fedora, DSL, Puppy etc. if you need a working install in under 1 hour.

  • Mine Ubuntu installation took 15 minutes :)

  • Took about the same for me (excluding partitioning, since resising my Vista partition took ~3 hours), but for older computes it can take a lot longer.

  • I did, but I think I'm ready to use something better than those precompiled distros

  • How on earth you dare to say this!! Windows is evil. People who think in such a way, just don't want to realise that there are much better systems, then theirs. I choose GNU/Linux. Now Ubuntu, in few days - Debian, and later - Gentoo Linux))

  • Yea... go tell Bill, and his company to stop putting viruses on their own fucking software... oh... wait... they wont do it because they WANT you to keep buying more antivirus bull shit.

With that being said... yea... keep using Windows, waste your money.

To me, two hours of instal is way better than:

    1. U$800.00 + Dollars of OS SoftWare

    2. U$300.00 +/- Dollars of AV Software

    3. Copyright bullshit.

    Fuck the corporate world.

    Fuck MicroSoft.

  • A. I run avast which is a FREE Antivirus/firewall, B. I didn't pay for the os it came on my comp, and even if it didnt there is Demonoid, C. Yeah I pay almost nothing for programs and OS.

  • A. I refuse to give you any reply as to what you have done.

    B. I could care less, I was not referring to what YOU do.

    C. Do what ever you want. I use Linux, you use what ever you want.

    Period, and end of conversation.

  • @notoriousvcm Okay ill use my Windows gladly =D

  • I do a Stage1 in about a day (unless you compile it on a i586, then it takes about a week).

..but when it's done, it's tuned for that specific architecture and it runs rather well.

I use Gentoo on most of my servers, ranging from a P233MMX to a P4.

If you want help, your best bet is the forums. Just don't be a smartass in there. Listen and Learn.

    --Simba7

  • How long did this actually take?

  • Please always install Gentoo from the online handbook!

Gentoo is almost cutting edge and rapid changing.

Do not rely on your memory, because mechanisms may change every weeks or months.

  • does anyone know the hardware requirements for Gentoo 2008

  • A computer, a screen, and maybe a mouse.

    Hope this helps :]

  • oh wait i found one... cool now i can install it and show all ma friends lol.

  • i just got gentoo linux 2008, and i am an oober noob so i need to figure out where the hand book is for installing that

  • nice

whts name of this song ?

  • I'm currently on my third install ( 2 previous ones on VMs ) and damn... nice ! No way I can do it without the handbook even though I have an idea of the steps involved. I really gotta learn how to use vim instead of nano, seems much more efficient once you know how it works.

  • mmmm i think that nobody in the whole world can install gentoo without the handbook.

    am i wrong?

i mean you´d have to memorize all the steps!!!

    please reply.

  • I can. It's actually very easy. Try to install it ~2 times and you'll remember what you have to do to install Gentoo. And the commands... the point is in what these commands do, not what commands do that. So you should try to memorize what are you doing, not steps or commands.

  • mmm well i´ll give it a try, and see if i can memorize the commands.. :)

    thank you for the reply.
