Well, I'd get rid of the waste by using that "illelegal" way of refining. If the UN has a cow, I don't care.  Man has some affect, I believe, on localized areas, not the entire planet. Totally agree on the hydro, wind, and solar. If everyone just got a solar panel or two on their roofs, that would be a good idea.

A localized area would be like a highly industrialized area of China, (with few environemental regs), that area doesn't affect where I live, because by the time that air has reached here, it has been scrubed/gotten rid of its contaminants. Similar effect to a forest fire, or volcano eruption. They affect their area and some near areas but not overall.

I'm for fustion, except we need a quicker solution to solve the energy and pollution problems. (I don't buy global warming being man caused, but I am for cleaner, cheaper sources of energy) Also, before too many fusion plants go online, you need that hydrogen which takes quite a bit of energy to form. So a series of Fission plants to set the ground work for fusion palnts and hydrogen cars (no sacrifice in power like electric) would be how I'd approach it.

It is possible to recycle nuclear waste. One problem. It is illegal because it is the same method that is used to enrich for weapons. My problem with that is...why does the U.S. need more nukes? we don't, so we should just recycle our waste and then there would be no problem with nuclear energy. Much more sightly than a bunch of windmills in the wildnerness too.

Using our current technology and our current rate of use, we have enough nuclear fuel for 130 years ..... not much more than we have oil. Then what?

The stigma against nuke plants is so great that I doubt we've been looking for too many more deposits. Also, it is possible to take nuclear waste and re-enrich it and re-use it. Thanks to the UN though, that is illegal because it is the same process as enrichment for a weapon. Why would the U.S. need more nukes? We don't, we have them, we have tons of them, so that is a mute point and there is no reason we can't re-use our waste. So, we have probably more than 130yrs. (that's still a long time)

Do you really believe that the USA doesn't spend considerable effort to locate ALL strategic resources? The stigma is against old, obsolete technology which has the potential to kill millions from accident or intent, not the new technology that is safe and efficient.

That 130yr estimate is most likely without the enrichment process. Also, that 130yrs (minimum) would gives us ample time to find a new energy source that is practical. 130yrs of human innovation is a very long time. There are two former uranium mines outside my town. No talk of further exploration, just talk of filling them in.

The 130 yrs is the old technology. We have had alternative energy sources for decades. Designs for Gulf Stream turbines have been on the drawing boards since the 1970's. the Gulf Stream has more energy than all the rivers of the world combined. We drill 12KM for oil. That is deeper than is necessary to tap a thermal delta to provide nearly limitless geothermal energy. They are already powering a town in Portugal off wave articulated power. Most important, we know how to "not waste".

I'm not against those methods, but there is no reason not to use nuclear power either. Use the best method for the region. Nothing should be written off. Again, I'm for this because of security, efficiency, and the economy, global warming is just a way for some to try and gain control and a scare tactic.

Nuclear power is among the 100's of choices to supply energy needs. I would like to see a reduction of the human population to its sustainable limit but I doubt we can get humans to stop drooling long enough to understand what that means.

Terrific coverage. Huffington post has an article by Dr. Hansen. What can we do about it? I have been studying this for two years (and 40 years in science) and I can only hope that a few major events occur that galvanize the world, and that in the next year or two we see a dramatic change in attitude. The only thing I am implying is that it is very strange. The idea that any scientist that tries to disprove the AGW theory is financed by ExxonMobil is in fact a consipacy theory. You can research everything that I wrote. The fact that you have never heard of Maurice Strong is a bit disturbing to me as he has been instrumental in promoting environmental causes for many decades.
