@legendaolegende The Swedish cavalry was actually more famous by that we used more cavalry than any other nation in Europe by that time, example is Fraustadt where we had around 3700 infantry against 16000 infantry but we had 5700 cavalry against 2000 cavalry.

The cavalry was the main part of the offensive tactics that Sweden used, and at Poltava the cavalry was not formed and ready for the final assault, this meant that we lost the battle mostly beacuse the cavalry was too late in the battle.

Swedish infantry was the best-trained infantry in that time, they had no competitors in combat... That's why russians used a lot of cannons in that battle, cannonballs don't care how experienced you are, they just killing everyone on their way :P

it was 17000 Swedes VS 35000 Russians. the Swedes where almost out of black powder and ammunition already at the beginning of the battle, while the Russians had almost an infinite supply since they where fighting at their own soil. the Swedes where out of food and water so they HAD to attack the Russians. the Swedes had 4 cannons (king Karl hated fighting with cannons) while the Russians had about 100. the Russians had built huge fortifications, and the Swedes had almost no siege equipment...

this is still no reason for the russians to celebrate over this victory, since the russian forces greately outnumbered the sweedish troops, perhaps the sweeds could have lured the russian forces to attack them and then have the better ground or wait for reinforcements but against such odds it really isnt a very significant military victory.

this is an example of pure numbers to win, and on that regard the russians allways had little regard for the lives of their men

But the Russian won the battle thanks to that the had artillery, food and supplies and a great man power. But i still thinks that Sweden had a better Army under that time. Länge leve Sverige

@MrSuckmyballs32 Actually the russians fought well in this battle, they have learned how to counter the famous swedish charges and its iron dicipline. They set up a series of forts to tier the swedes before the main battle line, they also had mutch better trained troops and equiptment this time around and were placed on a sloppy hill whit a massive arsenal of artillery. Truely the odds against the swedes were extremely poor, even so they almost broke the russian main line.

It´s a symbole for russias first modern military victory over the west and its establishment as one of europes great powers. The russians numbers vary, But since the battle took part in russia numbers around 35-45 thousand are very likely.

the actual battle consisted of completely 30,000 swedish troops vs 60,000 russian troops. obviously if an army outnumbers you, you are most likely to lose, then they decided to do a bayonet charge. obviously they will take extreme losses against the russians in melee.

yea i know that. in fact when i was reading the battle, the swedish were winning, however lacked to provide a powerful cav unit to help the in the bayonet charge. in ETW you can see that russians have some pretty badass melee stats compared to their shooting ability. im not hating on sweden, im just saying they got pretty outnumbered

we swedes call lützen a victory just becase the imperial German army left the field the day after the battle. the Battle itself was a draw.....

one Battle that was a huge victory for us swedes was the battle of Lund 1676 when we the Swedish army of 8.000 men crushed the Danish army of 13.000 men.
