I recently got the N97 and personally I really like it. After upgrading the firmware to v20, the phone is much snappier and more responsive. It's still not perfect, but this is the firmware that the phone should have launched with.
Overall, I'm happy with this phone having come from the N95. I'd have liked to have the N900, but it's not available in my country (at least not officially), so I'll live with the N97 and upgrade again as usual later (gotta love free upgrades).

I'll be getting an HTC hero, though I've used nokias for around 12 years, currently using an n95 8gig, the n97 fails to impress me. My business runs almost entirely on google apps, so an android phone is the way forward for me.
I'm from the US and you wouldn't catch me with an Iphone or a blackberry. My N95 destroys both of them. Just have to wait a little longer to get the N97

Unfortunately it's a resistive touch screen, not a capacitive which means you probably won't see multi-touch (I may be wrong though) but one thing is for sure, you have to press down rather than lightly touch the screen as it pushed two invisible layers together (resistive) compared to the iPhone which senses when you touch it by electrical currents (capacitive.)

I think the blackberry looks pretty lame, i swear Everyone has one in London lol. iPhones are pretty cool but its just basics it lacks like Bluetooth and video (up untill the new 3GS, which just ewnt from 2mp to 3mp cam) But even though the old one is 2mp the pics look almost as good as my 5mp N95. Still, cant wait to get my N97 in few days.

I can be wrong but they talk about snow leopard at the keynote WWDC. This is 6gb big and leopard befor 13 gb. I don´t think that the same os work in macs and the iphone.
It is only the bloated OS X and its mobile version that needs more and more CPU power. They are now making the OS 6GB smaller without dropping any features, that should tell you a thing or two about what goes on underneath iPhone's hood

@nanomyou5: The CPU is more than OK (yes, there are better, but there also smarter people than you ....), the RAM is something that the OS should worry about, not you, what seems to be not enough for Windows is more that enough for Symbian. The screen is gorgeous and has higher resolution than iPhone. The phone has Flash (as in Flash Lite 3.1) and its camera has flash as well. And finally there's no 9.5 UI thing ... whatever you're thinking about.

also, a better processor. if you're going all out for a flagship, this can't be it. the new phones need a mad processor. u can't lag behind the competition. hopefully you're coming out with a new version of Symbian for a real, high end touch phone.

Finally! A super exciting add from Nokia. I love it. I just got to test this one through a friend and the UI and keys are fantastic! I love this phone. Can't wait to get my very own!!!
Its pretty much a n95 or n96 with a n97 case. Theres nothing amazing about this phone. So disappointed, I'll stick with my n958gb. All your getting is a touch screen/ wider screen, a keyboard, that's it. Not worth $700+ for this phone. Hopefully nokia does it right on the n98. I hope they don't take a n97 and put a new case on it and call it the n98. And the apps? All nokia ever advertises about this phone is the facebook app. I doubt they can make good apps with that low cpu and graphics power
N97 has a graphic Chip which are running on minimal ... All phones run on minimal when they are first launched ... only when they are demographically tested .. a firmware to speed up software and hardware is released ... your N95 has received 3 updates to date ... thats why u find it amazing ...
Hm, wrong. First of all n95-4 us version, there was only 1 firmware released for it. Firmware v30 has not been released (v30 and on only available to other countries). So your saying the N97 has a GPU? is that so, send me a link that clearly says it has a dedicated GPU. And if they were to release a firmware update, it would probably just be to fix the bugs. This is phone is slow, 2 years behind the competiton, not worth $700. That's my point. Only good thing is the exterior look.
I hate to admit it but you do have a very solid argument. Although, unlike the N95 8gb, Nokia is not touting the N97 as the king of phones. They're simply trying to fill the N-series niche of being the swiss-army knife of the mobile market. Although there are many phones that outperform the N97 in certain areas, very few have consolidated such a heavy feature load. I do agree that Nokia should have added a GPU but I wouldn't call it "slow" until I've played with it first.

Argument ended the second you mentioned US standard phones, The US is way outdated on the mobile communications front. Nokia has to go to the stone age to be able to sell any phone in the US. The US didn't even know what Text messaging was 7 years ago. Only people the EU - MENA - and ASIA can really comment about the N97's performance. Don't worry, I don't think anyone's calling it a comeback with the same RAM as the 5800, same processor without hardware acceleration from several older devices, same camera circa N95/2007, and terrible keyboard.
I agree that the Samsung Omnia HD and SE Satio are awesome devices, and am still contemplating between those and the N97.. but you gotta admit.. a full qwerty keyboard with a full touch screen is fuckin sexy.. it's a real eye-catcher.
plus it's nokia. you know the cell is built to the highest quality, and has the highest clarity during calls

Finally! A super exciting add from Nokia. I love it. I just got to test this one through a friend and the UI and keys are fantastic! I love this phone. Can't wait to get my very own!!!

Every person that complains just points to the "bad". I'd like to see what alternatives to this device are there.
And don't get me wrong, I think it's OK to criticize but it'd be nice to spice up the critique with an alternative

Its pretty much a n95 or n96 with a n97 case. Theres nothing amazing about this phone. So disappointed, I'll stick with my n958gb. All your getting is a touch screen/ wider screen, a keyboard, that's it. Not worth $700+ for this phone. Hopefully nokia does it right on the n98. I hope they don't take a n97 and put a new case on it and call it the n98. And the apps? All nokia ever advertises about this phone is the facebook app. I doubt they can make good apps with that low cpu and graphics power

N97 has a graphic Chip which are running on minimal ... All phones run on minimal when they are first launched ... only when they are demographically tested .. a firmware to speed up software and hardware is released ... your N95 has received 3 updates to date ... thats why u find it amazing ...

Hm, wrong. First of all n95-4 us version, there was only 1 firmware released for it. Firmware v30 has not been released (v30 and on only available to other countries). So your saying the N97 has a GPU? is that so, send me a link that clearly says it has a dedicated GPU. And if they were to release a firmware update, it would probably just be to fix the bugs. This is phone is slow, 2 years behind the competiton, not worth $700. That's my point. Only good thing is the exterior look.

I hate to admit it but you do have a very solid argument. Although, unlike the N95 8gb, Nokia is not touting the N97 as the king of phones. They're simply trying to fill the N-series niche of being the swiss-army knife of the mobile market. Although there are many phones that outperform the N97 in certain areas, very few have consolidated such a heavy feature load. I do agree that Nokia should have added a GPU but I wouldn't call it "slow" until I've played with it first.

Argument ended the second you mentioned US standard phones, The US is way outdated on the mobile communications front. Nokia has to go to the stone age to be able to sell any phone in the US. The US didn't even know what Text messaging was 7 years ago. Only people the EU - MENA - and ASIA can really comment about the N97's performance. US consumers can strickly stick to their useless dysfunctional iPhone 3Gless ... mobile "phone". The N97 is a "Personal Internet Device" ... Cheers!!

So yours saying that people in the US aren't educated enough, because the N97's performance isn't comparable to other phones? You are a genius. Funny how you say US is out of date when they released the IPHONE3G/3GSS(since you brought it up), and now Nokia just started making phones similar to the IPhone (5800/N97). Yes that really explains that the US is out of date and living in the stone age. No wonder the IPHONE3G and 3GS is more powerful than the N97.... Cheerios!!

Chill, Don't miss the point. I'm American and no one is talking about the education levels of anyone. US Mobile networks are largely CDMA, which is quartz carrier based. The iphone is a fancy fast dysfunctional phone. The Apple just woke up to, Video capture, a 3MP camera, MMS hahahaha 10year technology... wait the most funniest "Copy, Paste" - My friend Trust me. For 199$ the 3GS is exactly what ur paying for..... "Nothing"

So what point were you trying to make? Why do you keep talking about the Iphone? Do you hate that phone so much, are you afraid of it? I never mentioned that in the beginning. My comment for the N97 was that there was no significant advantage over the N95. Its not fast, OS looks the same, nothing is new. Even the camera is the same 5mp. Accept it, N97 = N96+N95.

@vnepo: Nokia's phone's are "similar" to the iPhone only in the fact that they have touch screen support. Now, if that's how you measure anything then iPhone is copying Nokia who had touch enabled phone years before the iPhone, see Nokia 7710 or Nokia 6708.

whoa, you sound angry. are you a nokia fan boy? you must be. first of all, what point are you making here? when i said 'similar' did i specifically say touchscreen, of course i didn't. this really proves your attention to detail. but since you mention it, the iphone did make full use of touchscreen capability (multi touch), and now nokia just started implementing that on their recent phones 5800 and N97. do you really want to compare the iphone and nokia 7710/6708?

Don't worry, I don't think anyone's calling it a comeback with the same RAM as the 5800, same processor without hardware acceleration from several older devices, same camera circa N95/2007, and terrible keyboard.

I've used the keyboard first hand and you'll agree when you do the same. It sucks.
I don't recommend anything else, just don't waste $700 on this POS with old hardware.

I agree that the Samsung Omnia HD and SE Satio are awesome devices, and am still contemplating between those and the N97.. but you gotta admit.. a full qwerty keyboard with a full touch screen is fuckin sexy.. it's a real eye-catcher.
plus it's nokia. you know the cell is built to the highest quality, and has the highest clarity during calls
