(I refer you to performances by Jimmy Elledge, Narvel Felts, and some guy named Hinton, to hear it sung as written. To be fair, Willie himself couldn't have sung it as he wrote it.)

The possum is one of the greatest country voices ever. So sad to see these greats not only leave us, but to see country music become nothing more that rehashed 60's rock.

Willie Nelson has to be one of the greatest writers of all time and to hear so many do this song is a tribute to him. I love Brenda Lee's version as much as this one.
