  • They could bring back these days by not having spec cars and normally aspirated engines. Also put the apron back, Indy doesn't create much overtaking in its current configuration. Even on iRacing its virtually impossible to run side by side

  • As harsh a call as it is, the rules are rules, Scott Goodyear knew that you weren't allowed to overtake the pace car until it has pulled off the track to pit road.

On the other hand. out of the two Canadians, i'm glad Jacques won it.

    1. because he came back from two laps down and deserved it, and

    2. he came over to the F1 scene and stuck to Michael Schumacher, again within two years of appearing on scene :D :D

  • good on scott to stay out there lol.

  • The last and best indy 500 BEFORE the IRL

  • I guess Jacques Villeneuve ran 505 miles having a 2 lap penalty...to make-up

  • @cmgww

your totally right, its a bullshit call and the green lights were on its the tracks fault. and since brian barnhart tries to be a hardass and lay the rules down it never works because they never slow the pace car down and theres never a real double wide start which causes the drivers to complain because the fucking idiots in the back of the field are only in a race car because of money not talent....so then they just fuck everyones day by crashing into them in the back. brian barnhart is

  • What's funny is that nowadays that start would not mattered, as the pace car pulls off in turn 3 on restarts...and since Brian Barnhart has been chief steward the lead car has been allowed to gun it past a certain point. Goodyear would have won had it been 2000+....I am sorry, but pace car or not, if the green lights around the track are on, then punch it! That said, I am glad the new slower restart speed is in place. I am tired of seeing the leader jump out on the field before the restart

  • Will someone please post Goodyear's interview after the race?

  • scott goodyear is one of the best drivers not to win the indy 500

  • I know it will no longer be a spec series in 2012, but I still like to coin the term "IndyCzar" because Tony George.

  • watching this race makes me remember just how badly the mercedes benz 500I engine came back to bite roger penske in the ass although not entirely his fault, USAC weren't too amused that the engine wasnt widely available and reduced the boost to the point it was rendered useless, but as he said in 94 "when you compete in the biggest race in the world you dont tell your oppnents what you plan to do"

  • The two racing series' chairmans put aside their differences for one last race. A true champion was the result. Indy Car World racing championship died in 1995. then Broke drivers vs. Honda/corporate riders came after, now just Rich company spec racing remains.

  • Look at these cars, aren't they the most beautiful manmade things ever?

  • Spectacular overtaking by Scott G., obviously it deprived him to get the victory

  • I'm waiting 2012. Will be the return of "great Indy"!!!!

  • The real Indycar Championship died in 1995.

Congratulations to Jacques Villeneuve - the last Indycar champion.

  • Geez you cart blowhards still have sand in your vagina's for losing the war get over it and move on. FYI Indycar gos back to turbos in 2012,with

Chevy,Honda and lotus as engine suppliers.

  • Was Brian Barnhart making the decisions during this race?

  • Multiple chassis, tires and turbo engines need to come back. Only the IZOD´s managers can´t see that.

I miss the old PPG Indycar Championship Series, just like the last year, in 1995.

  • When people talk about tracks that torment drivers, why does Scott Goodyear's name never pop up w/ Indy? He could've easily won 3 of these, and instead won none.

  • @jrsub3 I guess for the most part he did it to himself... At least for this try anyway.

  • yes this is the last year that the good old eagle offys mclaren cosworths, penske turbines, all ran in the race no foreign drivers competed and the track record was nearly broken at 198 mph (4 laps),and ex winners were all over the starting lineup. It was also the last year a front engined "job" was in the racethose were the days

  • @MrCo2manchris Huh? Maybe the 1975 Indy 500 but certainly not the 1995 Indy 500.

  • @MrCo2manchris So the winner is a US citizen? Pretty much remember him being a canadian.

  • LOL who's Jack Villnev? i thought it was Jacques Villeneuve

  • Tony George has killed open wheel racing in north american. His plan to have more american drivers and tracks has failed. 15years later and the same drivers are winning and none of them are american. (Marco and Dancia....LOL.....whatever happened to winning races makes you great driver. Look at their stats. They suck). 3hours to Indy green flag and I could care less. Think I'll start watching the LeMans series and hit Mosport in the fall.

RIP Champcar. F**king die Idiot Racing League.

  • Jacques won this by 2 laps when you consider the penalty. Shows you how good the boy was.

  • It's now the turning point for open wheel racing. It can only go up from here.

  • Totally agree with your description for this video, champcar4ever and RedneckBart! Tony George has nearly destroyed the majesty of the Indy 500 and all of open wheel racing. His grandfather must be rolling in his grave!

  • Thank gosh for the amazing creativity of the Indy Racing League. Wow did those Einstiens save open wheel racing or what......LMAO

  • Dammit Goodyear I wish you would have won the race!

  • i swear the yellow car won...................

  • you mean the car that was 1 lap down?

  • Jacques wants to comeback to F1. Jacques is a driver that was better suited to the F1 cars of the late 1990's not the current cars they had afterwards.

Physically i don't think he's at the level of Schumi.

I doubt he'll have the sort of career he had with Williams.

  • I was there. Last 500 I went too. Maybe if the IRL gets near the same level as CART, I might come back.

  • Your hoping for a lot. BUT, there are signs of it improving. They are going to Brazil to help broaden the series get some fanbase growing. Talks of having various engine - chassis combinations.

Hopefully they'll bring back turbo charged engines.

Once they get enough fans, they'll add more tracks which the series desperately needs.

  • Yeah, I guess I am asking a lot. But until then, I don't care about Indy Cars. They can't go faster at Mid Ohio then a ALMS LMP-2 car? Pathetic....

  • Thanks for the seats, 96 was a great race.

  • Canadians running one-two in the Indy 500, that is awesome.

  • I remember watching this race on TV, and boy was I pissed when Scoot Goodyear made a douchebag of himself that day. I was rooting for him all the way especially because I wanted Honda power to win that race. Even now, I still don't forgive him for this. It's too bad we had to wait 9 years later for Honda to win Indy.

  • Man, Scott Goodyear passed the safety car before the green flag and he was later penalised.

  • USAC/CART DIDN'T SCREW GOODYEAR, GOODYEAR SCREWED GOODYEAR (and I'm not talking about the horrible tire)!

Yeah, that's pretty much the last 11 laps in 8 words.

  • I still cant belive Penske couldn't qualify a car.

  • indy should start like nascar they shouldn't accelerate until they are all behind each other and wait until the green flag is out before accelerating.

  • this is true but regardless goodyear should have never passed the pace car. jaques clearly saw what goodyear did and quickly slowed down

  • they should've waited another lap to give the flag.

  • Used to love watching the Indy 500. Rick Mears was my favorite racer. IRL - CART split ruined the circuit. I still can't get used to how the IRL cars look and sound. Hopefully, they will come to their senses soon and bring back these awesome cars!

  • The last great Indy 500. At this moment in time, Open Wheel Racing in America was getting so popular that even F1 was getting scared. Apart from Australia, FIA (F1) was getting so worried they banned CART from using road courses for races outside of North America.

Thanks to that Idiot TONY GEORGE and the IRL, the open wheel war split the fan base, diluted sponsors and destroyed the TV ratings.

Now it's 2009 & indycar is literally in shambles. NASCAR is the real winner of the open wheel war.

  • @RedneckBart 100% right....i LOVED open wheel racing when i was a kid....

  • @RedneckBart rofl, you're a proper seppo redneck ain't ye? nae fukin brains and nae facts, sense or logic at all ##

  • @RedneckBart all i watched was indy cars when i was a kid...now...well...you nailed it....

  • @RedneckBart I completely agree. Tony George is the root cause of IndyCar/CART/IRL taking a dive. It WAS my favorite sport on earth.

  • @RedneckBart

You don't know WTF was going on in CART, do you? American open wheel was getting to be F1 light....Ask Jeff Gordon who got the door slammed in his face when he tried to get a CART ride in 1991....Tony had good intentions, but screwed it up with the 25/8 rule among other missteps. But aside from TG, CART was fast becoming "NO OVALS" (maybe 3-4 or so)..it was trying to be F-1 in the US, and that doesn't fly here. OOH CART was getting banned from F-1 courses. fcuk CART.

  • @RedneckBart the 2011 race was badass and probably will be the most legendary of all-time

  • What was Villeneuve's penalty that knocked him down two laps? Stupid Goodyear, he should've kept his eye on the pace car...I admit, he was being stupid blowing by the pace car like that, and it was dangerous too...look at 0:20 and tell me how close Goodyear was to the pace car as he went by?

  • Villeneuve's penalty was for overtaking the pace car earlier in the race.... even thou it wasnt a full pass as he slammed his breaks on ..they still penalised him

  • Except that at its inception, the IRL had the 25/8 rule, guaranteeing 25 positions to full-time IRL entrants and only 8 to one-off entries. Furthermore, the expense of buying an IRL-spec chassis (or multiple chassis) just to compete in the Indy 500 was prohibitive to everyone but bigger teams like Penske and Ganassi.

The "stars" only defected to the IRL when it was becoming apparent that CART was rapidly losing its former popularity.

    tl;dr - you don't know what you're talking about.

  • the IRL is basically just the 1998 Indy Lights series. Absolutely no horsepower and cars are created to run equal... like NASCAR. Did we really need an open wheel NASCAR? Of course not. This is beautiful. Multiple chassis, tires and engines need to come back. Limit advancements to keep it competitive but let the teams race. I'm sick of open wheel taking a back seat.

  • Read your history books. Th 25/8 rule in 1996 prevented CART from entering any Indy 500's.

In addition, during 1997-98 the IRL moved to a different chasis & engine formula that was (and still is) ugly and sounds horrible.

The 1995 Reynard and Lola are one of the most beautiful looking chassis's ever produced. The IRL never had a chasis that looked as good as the ones used by CART.

  • They did. As stated, the 25/8 rule is just like the Top-35 rule in NASCAR...anyone in the IRL is guaranteed a spot while others must qualify their way in. This, like the NASCAR top-35 rule, is completely retarded.

  • was this before the IRL/Indy Cart "Division"?

  • This was the year before the split.

  • was at this race just like every race from 1977 on, predicted V would win the race that year. (won a little money on that bet) Felt bad for Goodyear but everyone else stayed back, gotta be a tough situation though, want to go, that close to winning. Love this race even though it lost some of its luster after the split, I see it slowly coming back to what it used to be these last few years

  • Does anybody find it ironic that right after that restart, at 0:47 the only flag that you get a good view at on top of the stands is a black flag? I just found it ironic.

  • b/c it was a black flag; due to a penalty on S. Goodyear...

  • What memories....Villeneuve was incredible this year. I miss the superchargers.

  • ?! His name is VILLENEUVE.

  • no the way he pronounced it was wrong.

  • Oh I see, sorry! I don't like the american pronunciaton too, but if you're an Indy/CART/Champ Car/Nascar etc. fan, you'll hear only american English. :/

  • this is one of the best videos i've seen on youtube. ((and i've watched a bunch).

  • Wooow those were the glorious years for Jacques. Winning IndyCar Series in 95, and the Indy 500 too, then in 96 a fantastic 2nd place as a rookie in the F1, and the next year he won the world championship. He's as talented as his father was.He is still one of my favourite drivers.

  • I was at that race, st close to where Scott blew by - Scott was robbed. Pace car was way way slow. I remember saying to my father "did you see that shheeet?"

  • ncaafsufan,

    Indy LIGHTS? Gimme a break.

  • Anyone know what kind of laptimes Villeneuve and Goodyear were running? It looked like Villeneuve was catching Good year in clean air. That would have been a good battle.

  • This is when Indy was Indy......CHAMP CARS or

CART for you old guys. Not the INDY lights car they drive today!!

  • I know I got some replys about my previous comment that Scott was robbed. Listen to

Bobby Unser's comment about the pace car

going to slow and their was nothing Scott

could have done. The person who drove the

pacecar had no idea how to pace a field. You

need to accelerate at race pace so you can be

ahead of the field. So when the green flag flys

the drivers do not have to wait. Jaq got lucky period!!

  • Bobby Unser is just wrong. Scott Goodyear made a bonehead mistake and completely deserved the black flag for passing the pace car. None of the penalties in this race were unfair, even Villenueve's.

  • wtf seriously? nobody likes upside down videos

  • Back in the days when Villeneuve was one of the best racecar pilot in the world. Finished 2nd in the F1 world championship the following year and took the first place as the F1 world champion in 1997... As a French Canadian, let me say those were proud moments...

  • This whole race highlighted everyone that was wrong at the time with USAC..its that kind of crap that lead to the formation od CART in the first place.

  • what a crock of shit... Goodyear was robbed

  • Yeah I hear you Man......Scott was robbed the pace

car could not accelerate its not Scotts fault. He

has done what all drivers would have done

    after the caution was over!!

  • Nobody else did that so don't say that Scott was robbed. Jacques Villeneuve won that race straight out, plain and simple.

  • Every other drivers slowed down, including Villeneuve, to stay behind the security car so I'd say that's his problem... You gotta be aware of what's happening on the track...

  • a ton of trash on the track!

  • Honestly I can't believe what I have said has been marked as poor. The INDY 500 started as an AMERICAN event. Anyway you look at it, its true. And as far as fair and equal racing, the race was actually better during the split because there was more equality in amount of money the teams had... Its really sad what has happened to American open wheel racing...

  • Winner = Scott Goodyear

  • A joke finish ... if the start was wrong the green flag never should have flown ... to penalize a driver after he is given the green flag is ridiculous

  • "Calling all Grand Prix F1 buffs"!!! have the following "genuine" autographs that I may be prepared to part with for the right amount..They include: Ronnie Peterson(2wice)Tom Pryce(2wice)Mark Donahue, Graham Hill, James Hunt, Patrick Depailler, Jody Scheckter, John Watson, Carlos Reutumann, Arturo Merzario, Brett Lunger, Jackie Stewart (2wice) Ken Tyrell, Lord Hesketh, Lela Lombardi (Female F1 star)..Plus many more! Only serious offers please? All autographs in the same book, but can seperate.

  • Those old Indy 500 starts and restarts were crazy. None of this keeping up with the pace car stuff back then...

  • on that final restart, they should have just waved the yellow and abandoned that restart, they should have had them then go around one more time, have everyone catch up and line up then throw the green flag for the restart.

  • Every now and again, Sam Posey said something worthy of repeating. With about 5 laps to go, he said that the 1995 Indy 500 will be remembered for the role the officials played. He was right. But not just the last 10 laps. The entire race was a big fiasco.

Incidentally, the best part of this race was without a doubt Pruett trying to chase down Goodyear. Pruett's demise was a gust of wind. If that gust of wind had not happened, perhaps he would have won.

  • 1 45 nothing even happend

  • Its not easy to see, but he does get loose momentarily, and slides right up next to the wall coming out of Turn 2.

  • what if he ran into the pace car :O that would be funny and scarry at the same time o.o

  • It's a shame that Greg Moore never gaot a chance to run here.

  • As a Salazar fan, it's a shame what happened in the restart, as Salazar lost mommentum and got passed by Fittipaldi and Rahal. He could've won it, who knows. ;-/

  • Lol, Arie got his lap back at the end! The Indy 500s wil get better and better with the merger, hopefully it will gain back to its former greatness

  • As long as Tony George is the one calling the shots, American open wheel racing is doomed

  • I was there.

Crazy race, with that finish and Stan Fox's horrible crash it certainly was a memorable day. That and it is Indy.

It won't be the same without the turbocharged cars but it is better now since the merger. If you've never been, go.

  • I've always thought of this running of the 500 as one of the all-time great races. The more times you see it the more you realize how many stories form up as the race wears on and play out as the laps tick away. Shame no Indy 500 has been as good since the split, though if you ask me 2006 with the close finish between Hornish and Marco Andretti was at least decent.

  • You heard it hear first "Danica will win 2009

500" this will be her year!!!

  • You just tell your girl to keep her attitude in check and stop trying to fight everybody.

  • can't do that!

    last real 500.

  • i grew up with indy i loved it aye. and im not even american im aussie, this use to be on our tv absalutley awsome to watch.

  • The last real Indy 500 :(

That just sucks. This used to be the greatest event in sports.

  • Indy 500s are real again now though.

  • The cars are too slow and boring. I'll wait until the new engines come.

  • So was Arie a lap down of something?

  • technically no, he crossed the stripe ahead of villy ;)

  • i understand goodyear trying to get a run, but to pass the pace car like that? brainfart.

  • Last real CART Indy500 - 1995

But a true Indy500 wasn't many years ago it was in 2006 when Sam Hornish Jr. won.

  • How must Pruett and Vasser felt seeing Goodyear do that? One of them should have won this race, though Villeneuve did fantastically after goofing up passing the pace car earlier on.

  • that was the last truth indianapolis 500 i hope with merge this race raise up to the was on one time.

  • Jacques Villeneuve

    1995 IndyCar Series champion

    1995 Indy 500 champion

    1997 Formula 1 world champion

  • to ayrton3senna - pretty successfull carreer -nevertheless he's been quite an underrated driver - may be he did change after winning so much, loosing will or mental and phisical shape who knows ...

  • I was totally pissed off at Scott Goodyear for blowing Honda's chance at victory at Indy. To this day, I still don't forgive him for that. What the fuck was he thinking. Scott is such a douche bag for this. At least Honda would eventually win 9 years later.

  • goodyear should have won but they both are canadian woooooooooooo o Canada the 08 race was great dickson ran a good race

  • He had a better car than Jacques anyway, inexcusable move by Goodyear.

  • Villeneuve was unofficially 2 laps ahead of everyone else...

  • Goodyear's run on the pace car happened right in front of us...couldn't believe he did something that stupid!

And since this was the last real Indy 500...this year's is going to be the first real one since! Start your engines, racefans!

  • Real?? Just because the split is over? The race will suck. Only a handfull of teams actually have a chance to win. It is sucky racing. I wish it was more even, but it is simply have and have nots.

  • At Indy, it's always been so that only a handful of teams have a great chance to win. Penske, Ganassi, Andretti, these are the major names. But more teams = more competition which leads to more money, better teams, more competition, etc. etc. etc.

  • Scott Goodyear had bad luck got screwed twice..like uncle Bobby said he had to get going what was he suppose to do..love watching these old races..

  • Two years later, he blew a late lead to Arie Luyendyk too.

  • I don't knoiw why that goodyear dood didn'tgo into the pits... After all he is a moron

  • Picture this, you go in the pits and then they realize, no, we shouldn't have given you the penalty. Not much they can do about it by then. There was nothing to be lost by staying out.

The fault is all Goodyear's - after all Villeneuve had been penalized on almost the exact same sort of move earlier in the race.

An amazing racing story, and a highlight in Veilleneuve's career.

  • Thanks for posting the video. I've been into F1 since 96 but only started watching the IRL in 2007. I'm really getting into it now. Could one of you whos been following Open wheel racing in America please give me a quick history of how it started and why its gone through so many different names and has split up and reformed etc. I find it very confusing

  • In 1978, Dan Gurney and several others formed Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). CART was formed after several owners were upset at the way the United States Auto Club had been running IndyCar racing. CART went on to create a great series with a mix of ovals, road courses, and street courses. Their marque event was the Indianapolis 500, which was recognized still as a USAC event. There was always an uneasy truse between CART and USAC and in 1994...

  • Racermac, I enjoyed reading your CART/IRL history and I agree. But what I feel really damaged the popularity of Indy racing was the fact that between 1992-'94 it had so many legends retire. It had Rick Mears, Al Unser Sr., A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Tom Sneva and Gordon Johncock, guys that had been there for decades leave. It didn't change MY intensity, but Greg Ray, Billy Boat, etc. couldn't automatically take their place. If NASCAR had 5 Richard Pettys retire the same thing would have occured.

  • That's another aspect of Indy that has been discussed is the retiring of the heros. As the new one's began to develop, the split happened. Didn't really allow the new stars to identify themselves at the Brickyard.

  • In 1994, several CART car owners became more disgugsted with the way USAC ran the 500 as well as other aspects. To help preserve the 500, Tony George created the Indy Racing League, an series created to race an all over schedule featuring the drivers who had raced in USAC's short track divisions.

1996 marked the first year of the IRL and at the same time CART continued. As a protest to the IRL, CART ran their own 500 mile memorial day race at Michigan, which saw disastorous results.

  • CART continued to see success with it's series until about 1998 when television ratings began to decline with NASCAR's rise, and the IRL continued to expand but with lack lusture crowds and the same problem as CART with mediocre ratings.

In 2001, both sides were in their prime as both put an average of 25 cars on the grid for each of their races. As the IRL continued to grow, CART's flagship owners, Penske, Ganassi, and Andretti bolted for the IRL in 2003.

  • Also in 2003, CART began seeing financial trouble and filed for bankrupcy and went to bankrupcy court. Tony George in the first attempt to unify the sport, tried to buy CART's assets. However, the assets were awarded to Kevin Kalhoven, Paul Gentilozzi and Gerry Forsite. These three renamed CART, ChampCar in 2004 and changed the sports focus from a diverse schedule, to a series full of road and street courses resembling that of a festival atmosphere.

  • By 2005, yearly rumors of reunification were of a constant. In 2006 hopes were at their highest, but with the announcement of ChampCar's DP01 for the 2007 season, the hopes for unification were at a hault. In 2007, neither series managed to average 20 cars on the grid and finally in February in 2008, the unification was announced. This is the story in the short version. Yes, this is the short version.

  • I was There, turn 3.

  • This was my first Indy 500, my father took me when I was 9 years old. I still remember the terrible crashed which happened right in front of us (we had inside, turn 2 seats.) I have went to like 4 other 500s but have since stopped going, my dad has still off and on though.

  • Wow the restart was a badass who ever led it...

  • My first Indy was 1961 when Sir Jack Brabham ran the first rear engined car. Having grown up in Indy and been to the track many times, open wheeled racing is done. Even with the consolidation of Cart and IRL, open wheeled racing has lost it's momentum and will never recover. Stock car racing stepped into the void...and so it goes.

  • Gilles Villenueve was my hero, and it saddens me to see that his kid is a stupid little shit

  • a spoiled bratty bastard. i agree.

  • Why is Jacques a stupid little shit?

  • I have been to the last 13 Indianapolis 500s, they have all been big races but this year will be the best race in recent memories.

  • Poor Goodyear... Close in 1992, screwed in 1995, and then USAC fucked up the end of the race in 1997 which gave him no chance at it. Scott Goodyear is the Lloyd Ruby of the 90s.

  • screwed in '95? he screwed himself, jacques was the one that got screwed by USUCK. Get a brain.

  • First Jacques screwed himself by going by the pacecar but because he had that penalty he thought better of doing that again on the restart, which basically won him the race :>

  • Goodyear blew it in 97, watch the replay, green flag comes out and Goodyear is warming up his tires multiple car lengths behind Arie. Scott should have been prepared to go green if need be.

  • Unification at last! Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven have finally agreed to put their egos aside and race in a unified series. This will place the Indy 500 back on the map in terms of legitimacy. I can't wait until May!!

  • hahaha. indy will never be what it once was.

  • This gave Jacques The second seat at williams beside Damon Hill, nearly won the F1 championship in his rookie year (and almost won the season opener in Melbourne)

  • nice to watch races without all the damn tickers and "side-by-side" crap. . .

  • Actually, I like the Side by Side commercial breaks (as opposed to no race pictures at all during the breaks), but these days there is somewhat of an information overload with a constant running order and other helpful but sometimes annoying graphics.

  • dude that car almost flew away!

  • I was in the north end of the pits, and I remember clearly Goodyear going past the pace car, and knowing that Villeneuve had just won the race - because Goodyear pulled one of the bonehead moves in history.

  • Now Honda are the only manufacturer that will win unless TG can entice more automakers to supply engines. Even though I dislike his reason for breaking away, I must admit that he is making some smart changes (mostly in regard to purse monies). If only he could get those engines to SOUND fast...

  • No dought that rae was fixed! they didn't want Honda to win....

  • sure NASCAR was seen by 2 billion people.. i would hope it got alot of fans on its biggest race of the year.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway is known around the world by REAL, legit, respectable racers. most, prolly all, open wheelers. NASCAR is known by most foreigners as CRAPCAR lol, sure Indys in a rut atm but it'll get back into the public sooner or later

  • Well, they have lost some "lustre" do to the split...

  • They may have, but it is still the largest single day sporting event in the world. You don't get that for nothing. Cars going that fast, being seperated by those small margins, without dumb-ass fenders will be exciting no matter who is in charge.

  • That said, I feel that this is the case IN SPITE of TonyG. There is nothing like sitting in the pit road terrace watching practice. The ambiance is worth it to a REAL race fan. As far as the IRL not being able to field a full roster for it's races, true, but at Indy, there's the feeling that the independent racer can come and find a ride and have a shot.

  • Every year there are drivers who show up without a ride and cars without drivers and magic happens. This is a special place and a special race that still, no matter what, creates a warm feeling in the hearts of young race fans. The IMS is the greatest track in the world and the 500 is still the one of the most prestigious races in the world.

  • Even though it has lost some charm. The Indy 500 one of the greatest races on earth. It ranks right up with the Daytona 500. I know its NASCAR but every year 200,000 poeple come to see that race. And almost that many come to see the Indy 500. I want see both the indy and daytona 500's.

  • 200,000ish for Daytona - 350,000 for Indy... You were close. :)

  • Not to start an agruement but this years Daytona 500 was seen in over 170 countries and seen by 2 billion people. To me the indy500 can't do that but then again i maybe wrong. plus i didn't count the infeild for daytona so it is higher i just count the people in the seats not the infeild.
