I make the trace frames myself using picture frames and tracing paper. I then shoot the light through the tracing paper. Having come from a TV backround this is what we often use to create nice soft lighting and it works for stills too. I never shoot with flash as I have much more experience with continuous lighting.
I use styrofoam boards, 3mm thick. Flashlight shoots through it and gets perfectly diffused. Moving the speedlight further away from the board, the light becomes softer and softer.
