Im somewhat confused, but with coperate so called downsizing, I'm not so much...I originally signed up for mail only cheap 4.99/month plan, 2 a month thru mail..., well, nothing has changed! I'm pretty sure it was the more expensive plans that went up, either way, Netflix, a smaller increasse, prob would have been acceptable, with ADVANCE MAILED notification!!! I DO UNDERSTAND why they R leaving in droves...,<D 1/9/2011
Btw, I've had Netflix for 4 years. I'm annoyed that although you can freeze/put on hold your account activity they repeatedly continued to charge me and when I called to get it straightened out the rep was pleasant and apologetic saying that it shouldn't have happened but danced around why I was being billed in spite of a hold that was to be lifted in over a month away. They've done this like 3 times since then so although I loved Netflix I have no choice but to cancel.
If all their stuff was digital I wouldn't care about the increase. To be honest I love the instant and hate the back and forth DVD business. I'm sure it's tough on them in a way because my mailman would periodically put multiple DVD's in my neighbor's box (do you think they bothered to return them to me or Netflix?) and I would call and report that I never received them - they had to eat the cost on the DVDs and the postage to send/receive them twice. Charge me $20-$25 give me unlimited instant.
Even at $16 a month it's still an absolutely amazing deal. Movie rentals are usually around $4 per movie. For $16 a month that's 4 movies per month via regularl companies. Whereas with Netflxi you could watch one movie per day.. that's 30 movies for $16.. that's not just an amazing deal, that's an asbolustely incredible deal.
Start low, destroy your enemies from behind. Then go large to piss everyone else off. lol. the whole thing a screw up anyway. i didnt even think there $10 was worth it. if i want streaming it be for any movie. not a limited amount where instead have to wait on a dvd when its not up on steaming. renting movies at lest for my family is just a random thing we decide to do out of no where. waiting for a movie in the mail kills the mood. & there streaming DOSE NOT cover all movies only some.
the people bailing netflix are crybabies what you expect a free lunch? netflix raises rates 60% and has 20 million subscribers it looses 1 million subcribers loosing about 10 million dollars in revenue. but the other 19 million subcribers pay 60% more and decide to stay. giving netflix an increase in profit of 100 million dollars. GOODBYE loosers netflix does not need you, and the people that stay will get better service.
@TheCashistrash your math shows a 100 million dollar increase in revenue which shows the greed everyone is talking about. Alos you claim there will be better service, friends of mine who still use netflix still scroll through the same crappy movies. Or you can get 1 dvd a month for 8 dollars or just use redbox which sucks driving to everyday.
Recently we got an excellent deal from our local cable company and we have been watching all our favorite titles on there. And in the meanwhile, our Netflix account has been neglected for over 3 weeks and we are seriously considering to cancel the account unless, some serious and more generous changes will occur with Netflix.
Somehow it feels like we as paying customers, are being fulled and as the company grew into a corporation with millions of customers, the product availability and satisfaction became much less.
At first when Netflix started, I clearly remember that the deals Netflix had were much more reasonable. But as the Company grew with time, deals became not as appealing, as the movie streaming option became available but very limited, there was less of a variety of movies to choose from and most of the titles we were actually interested in, were only available on DVDs, one DVD at a time.
Hello. I am Jake. Me and my girlfriend opened an account with Netflix. but now we are not satisfied with the service that we were originally promised by the company.
just cancelled netflix because i got sattelite... you cant compare the two but.. i heard alot of movie companies were cancelling their contracts with netflix so... got out while the getting was good :)
One other thing to you Corporate Power Wolfs out their. I bet you hate this dam shit UTube what could be worse than 70 percent of the world paying attention to each other. They might actually have a thought with out you controlling them. Scary Huh anyway people are waking up and their tired of all the new form of slavery How you keep them down and keep obtaining more for your self. Times running out We all know about your plans. What can you do blow the world up? It was a good run now its over
If anyone on here s got the money lets get together and put something together. They just screwed up Utube is the big easy way to advertise. Hell if we offer our services to say angry grandpa, freakout kid for nothing just so they will endorse our product we will have more business then we can handle. Get the licenses from all the really good tv shows that netflix is kicking out. I see Blockbuster is trying to get back up and running fuck that we have seen how they handle things. Lets start over
Who the he'll still watches DVD's. If yo like them so much buy them and keep them forever. 7.99 for streaming unbeatable price, Hulu is nothing compared to Netflix so I don't know why people are changing, just wait a couple of months and they will be back trust me I used to be a subscriber.
nixie im sorry to tell you this. streeming is cheap dirt cheep and the movies they get at netflix is old cheep or b rated cheep this is why blockbuster is bragging about how we get it faster than redbox and netflix. netflix does not want to send out dvds becouse it cost them a buck to mail it 2 ways and enevlope it cost them cents to streem movies( the price jack ) i heard that netflix got sued for not haveing subtitles and they though they can pass the buck to the customer they lost customers
CEO concerned??? When did you ever a see a CEO who runs the company to the ground sweat?.......Wait till you see the severance package and who gets to the foot the bill... investors, also known as their counterpart, the taxpayer. It's always the hardest working, lowest paying people that get the shaft, big time. It's nice to have a good salary but when does it become just greed? We should also boycott one oil company for each year so they can get the msg., too.
The price increase is annoying, but not that big a deal, really.
What is really annoying in addition to missing bonus features is having to wait a month for some of the newest movies or even much longer for other titles, like BBC DVDs,etc.
I had to wait three months for an old Jon Pertwee Doctor Who.
There are also some titles available on DVD only, and other titles that are streaming only.
And how about the out of print titles not available in either format? Feh.
I only really use streaming, so it didn't really effect me. oh and 'accounting treatments' is a nice way to say 'accounting fraud'.
There are other options, for example I use Itunes to get stuff that isn't on netflix streaming and so forth. Mix up your services for what works. For me I will usually wait for a movie or show to be available on one of the several streaming & online rental services i use. It's still cheaper than paying the cable company for their on demand service!
The feds keep increasing the price of postage,so netflix wants to shift to streaming only, and it reduces storage cost, also reduces employee numbers, saving the company money, and keeping our subscription price low. All you cheap people complaining will never find a television service better than netflix. Many of their dvd only movies are now on streaming. If your movie is not on streaming just go to publix and rent the redbox 1 buck dvd.
It is insane that people are outraging over $6 a month! Yeah, I can understand that it's the principle of the thing, but regardless, quit acting like a bunch of babies about it! Think about how great of a deal it still is: you can get an amazing selection of movies and DVDs sent to your house, plus stream a large selection of great shows right to your TV or computer for only $16 a month. That's still amazing!!! Grow up and quit throwing hissyfits over stuff that isn't a big deal!
netflix put hollywood video out to the farm, over the last few years blockbusters have been closing more and more stores due to the same lost in customers. It seems to me that netflixs was not hurting over the lack of people paying for what they offer. Killing to major companies in less then ten years is a major change in what people are willing to pay. To jack up the price is like telling there customers that they dont think there is any where eles for them to get the movies. uncool move.
They do have a right to charge the increased price. However, this doesn't mean that I have to like it as a consumer. Since I mainly see my movies on Blu-Ray, I'm cancelling at the end of this month and switching to Blockbuster since for $10 I also get game rentals.
WTF just 16 dollars a month that's cheap as hell if hula plus was as popular as netflix they would raise the price I love Netflix it's wroth every penny.
$12 movie tickets!!!!! Around here where I live the most expensive is about $7, and even then it's usually $4 or $1.50, depending on what theater you're at.
The ole bait and switch. However they need to expand their servers and upgrade the connection... A year ago: I could log onto netflix and have all the titles show up instantly... Lately I've had to wait up to 2 minutes to load just the title screen... Thankfully I only have the instant streaming service... So my prices didn't change
0:58 seconds is the exact answer. Netflix would love to leave it at $10 per month, but they can't due to greedy content providers. Drop the DVD plan, and download what Netflix isn't allowed to stream. That way, a great company gets their money, and greedy companies don't.*
*See Showtime/HBO taking their shows off streaming to fracture the market. The PS3 does Netflix and Hulu, not Showtime/HBO streams. Why make people have to go to a bunch of different sources for content?
Heh, milk IS $6.29 where I'm at. Anyhow, I've been with netflix since they started at $19.99. I just canceled because there isn't anything worth watching IMHO anymore
It's 8 dollars / month for unlimited streaming - see no reason to NOT do that, you can get it streamed wherever, watch it wherever, and it's all instant!
the only thing am getting the steaming for on my 360.. if blockbuster had steaming on consoles i would leave netflix all together.. i only use blockbuster for
games.. netflix charging too much an they don't even have games for renting
@callmeshane303 If only more people thought like Gabe Newell...
Piracy. Big in Russia. He provides this service called Steam, BOOM! 20% more Russians actually buying for content, and at relatively decent prices at that.
I don't know you guys but I'd rather pay NETFLIX than have COMCAST shove their low quality crap up my ass for 100$ a month and the worse part is u gotta rent their box because you gotta have it to watch their cable. WTF. Yeah charge 200% more I'll do it. ANYTHING to destroy COMCAST, DISHNETWORK, DIRECT T BLOW V, and anything else. Netflix has been too kind and everyone has been abusing their DVD privileges by never returning, returning damaged cd's, or lying it never arrived. NETFLIX rules!
C'mon people! If you have problems scraping up an extra $6 for unlimited dvd and streaming movies then maybe you have bigger financial problems in general than you think you do and you ought to prioritize and probably shouldn't even Netflix to begin with.
What did people think was gonna happen? Nothing good lasts forever, that's a general rule you can always count on and, plus, Netflix needs to support its infrastructure. It can do that solely on goodwill. It needs cash.
The price increase isn't so much about licensing. Its more about content delivery. Netflix is pushing massive amounts of data through the net and now they are being charged more. expect prices to go up.
Kino.to is back as kinox.to - also for german and megavideo offers unlimeted stream for free; you only have to reset your router once in a while. This is done by typing 192.168.1.1 in your standard browser, log you in (standard is name: admin; pass: 1234) and navigate you to "Reser router"!
It's hard to think that they were actually losing money. Even if you only make 10 cents off of each person, that's still 25,000,000 people. That's still about a 2.5 million monthly gain, and then you extend that over years and they probably made more than that off each person. That's just me guessing, I could be wrong. Either way, adios Netflix... After 2 years, I am going to cancel when September rolls around and my price goes up. Till then, I'm gonna stream till I cream!!
Now that Netflix single-handedly killed most of the competition; local rental chains, they're going to charge more because they know people are still willing to pay. Redbox is their closest competitor
I don't understand the purpose of both streaming and physical copies anyways. If you can stream it then wh add in the middle man that is the postal service?
I'm not a movie person, so I don't actually care very strongly one way or the other. I'd have to say "If you don't want to pay that much, then don't". The comparison to milk was a little different, because milk is food, i.e. a "need", and movies are only "wants". There's plenty of other ways to entertain yourself.
I'm curious whether they really had priced themselves so low that they couldn't turn a profit. That would be devious -- and I think illegal, since it killed competition.
If that is the case, then they need to have better negotiators with them when the meet the movie studios. Either they move towards streaming more movies online or work with one company (i.e. starz) and just do DVD rentals instead.
As many already said, the final price is not outrageous per se. The trauma is indeed due to the fact they had a VEEERY LOW price to start with.
I wouldn't mind to pay $16 (or Euro if the service was available in Italy), but I am concerned that by having a low price for so long they indeed driven out the competition, so in the future we may be stuck with them even if they rise up the price again or they start to impose other limits (i.e. no longer unlimited streaming/DVD).
the price is about right, what is wrong is the fact they had their prices so low specifically to kill the competition. so now that theres not much choice they hike the prices. this is the pure definition of a monopoly.
the ability to stream movies directly to a television is, to say the least, a gigantic leap in home cinema. However, an increase in streaming content results in the unintended consequence in needing less human labor in the distribution of physical DVD's. NETFLIX appears to be raising prices to cling to their already established workforce and not add to the unemployment numbers
I quit Netflix last month because their selection online did not satisfy my taste. Many of the TV shows and movies on instant streaming were outdated and I wish they had more recent material. They put Blockbuster out of business and still can't get the best selection? Come on, Netflix. You're weak sauce.
I never bought into rental services. I almost bought into Gamefly and thought about similar video game rental services, but I tend to play games I want to keep for months, and the rental is for only one or two games at a time. Also, the price of such services is way too expensive if you do the math.
NetFlix has free alternatives, like Hulu and YouTube, and there's always RedBox. 60% increase is a huge difference, but I suspect the price is reasonable to a lot of people.
Guys here's a simple solution to the problem, just subscribe to streaming only for 7.99. and the dollar you saved can be used to rent 1 dvd per month at redbox machine at publix.I rarely rented dvd's even though I was paying for the streaming and dvd service. Ok guys, but if they increase the streaming price, then we all cancel them.
They offer no Linux Support But there servers are indeed linux. I called them up And told them unless they find a way to offer Linux Support i will cancel as well.
What it all boils down to is that Hollywood is trying to kill Netflix. Two major studios were originally planning on creating a Netflix-like site way back in the day but one of them wanted the majority of the profits and the deal tanked. In the aftermath, everything got sold to Netflix instead. But now the studios realize that Netflix is killing their DVD sales and theater profits all at the same time. Their response is this attempt to make Netflix unprofitable.
May I suggest cancelling your Netflix subscription and the using the money you save to move to Somalia where they don't have to contend with this sort of tragedy.
I'm from England so I can't get Netflix but I see the same arbitrary price hike on food at the supermarkets (bet it's the same in the US). I see food prices increased by 20% 30% even 50% with no explanation or justification. It's like "well the people are used to seeing prices rise so let's get on that gravy train". Angering.
@qp1e those food price increases have 2 sources: #1 money-printing. Paper is not money but you are forced to use it. Resources are real money (land, food, water, gold, silver, copper). #2 drought is hitting the Northern Hemisphere with a vengeance killing off crops in China, India, southern USA, Russia and Canada.
The price was bound to go up. The fresher material costs more to obtain. Plus the shipping costs are bound to go up with fuel costs.
The argument about "it's the same price, who will pay more?" remember the cost of gas. We complain, then we pay anyway. Oil companies and politicians haven't been able, or willing, to reduce fuel costs. So we're stuck.
I believer that they indeed initially charged too little. Low cost to draw people in and get them to use their service instead of others (mainly physical rentals)
@dionysuspsi agreed. though gotta factor in the costs of acquiring the rights to more movies to keep with the growing demand and influx of users. Part of it also depends on what package you're using too, if you can do streaming just fine (no lag) then don't get the dvds, just use netlix streaming package, etc. good point though
I understand that sometimes the need for a price increase is legitimate, however, since they have put blockbuster and nearly all of the mom and pop video rental places out of business, they seem to have a monopoly. this is not good business, this is just greedy!
I agree with you this is the 2nd price hike in less that a year I hear lots of rumurs that is total b*ll Sh*T 1. netflix enevlops ruen postal machine and need to pay to fix them 2 internet streeming is now being taxed so you have to pay more BUT I THINK THAT THEY KILLED THE COMPUTATION AND NOW THEY CAN CHARGE WHAT THEY WANT wallmart does the same thing give everything away near cost and all small shops die and jack up price's
I think Netflix did an outstanding job they kicked the competition in the beginning like Blockbuster, and now that they have millions of subscribers, most people generally speaking on their consumer basis as a whole, will continue to stay with Netflix. So, they're going to make more money. The people leaving will most likely be replaced with the money coming in from the consumers with dual subscriptions having DvD's and streaming.
Torrents have a legitimate use, but all of you are using them illegally. If you've got the money to pay for a movie/game/album, why don't you pay for it? You try to justify it by saying that these big corporations/production companies are evil, but you're still stealing from them, which is wrong. By that logic I should be able to go to my local walmart and take whatever I want. Stealing is wrong, and I hope you realize this eventually, before or after you get a bill from the MPAA/RIAA.
@MrJaHorton your not stealing anything. get this, stealing is taking something that can not be reproduced. copying is making an exact copy with the original not being modified at all. stealing ≠ copying.
@ctoon6 No, films/games/music, are all worth money, and they are the result of many people's hard work. By downloading them for free you are hurting these industries. Copying, would be ripping the dvd onto your hard drive for your own personal use/ convenience . Ethically, there is nothing wrong with that. But uploading them to sites like the pirate bay so that others can get them for free is wrong. You can justify it however you like, but you're still being immoral. Stop being so cheap.
@MrJaHorton I never said that it was a good idea, all i said was that stealing and copying are not the same thing, If i were to download the camed version of HP and the deathly hallows part 2 on TPB, i would have only copied an existing file, WB would not have lost a cent, because i made that copy at my own expense.
@ctoon6 - Rubbish. He's stealing a service. There's little difference between this and sneaking into a cinema to watch without paying. I know everyone does it, but don't try and make it seem like it's not wrong.
@ytgv3fc7 And torrenting is not copying. Look, I'm done arguing about this... If you're seriously blind/delusional enough that you can't see that torrenting is wrong, then good luck. By watching a torrented movie (a product which is worth money) and not paying for it, you are STEALING. That's just the advantage of technology, social recluses like you never have to leave their home to steal. People like you give linux users a bad name, no wonder companies see you all as cheap/ poor bastards.
@MrJaHorton copying is flat out not stealing and that's that. It's a fraud to pretend it is, period. The very notion of copyright is a fraud crime put upon us all. A torrented movie is NOT a product worth money. It's DATA worth $0.
Copyright & patent law are crimes against humanity to be destroyed at all times.
I don't have Netflix, so I'm not really qualified to comment on the subject, but I can tell you that my home phone/broadband Internet service *doubled* its monthly cost to nearly $200. Needless to say, I might soon be able to see your videos only once a week at my local library.
I certainly hope not. I love your videos and you. You are incredibly smart and sexy. I am pretty sure that dating you is not an option for me :( but hey, a man can always dream!
@erdal0 Wow. You have poor grammar, can't spell, and don't know basic math! I pitty you.
If the original price of the service was $10 a month, and is now $16 a month, we subtract the original price from the modified price, giving us 6. Then we find what percent 6 is of the original price (10) by dividing 6 by 10, giving us 0.6. To get the percent from the multiplier, we multiply it by 100, giving us 60%.
I just use Red Box and it only costs me 3-5 a month. Netflix is all right but it's like paying for a bunch of old movies and maybe a good one every other month. There aren't very many movies I want to see anymore and most of them aren't worth the ticket price. Hollywood churns out remakes and garbage more than good movies now. HP is one of the few movies I'll see in a theater. Also, Gurnee Mills ticket prices are almost 20 bucks now
Good. The company should able to make money and if their capital and/or their human resources are causing them to lose money and they need to raise prices, so be it.
Netflix failed to do proper PR here. They need to increase the rates (because digital licensing is not cheap) but they did not properly inform their customers. I find this surprising from a company that automates a "we're sorry" email whenever I report a disc that was damaged. A simple set of sequential emails explaining the situation and promising that they would license new content in exchange for the price increase would have worked. Raising it arbitrarily (as they did) was not smart.
Let the free market decide. If you don't want to pay more. Cancel your sub, if you don't mind then keep paying. Me personally I've been an on and off Netflix customer for over 5 years. I'm about to enter another off cycle because since I subscribed again 5 months ago, I've streamed a total of 1 movie... kind of a waste, but I'm a work-a-holic and what little time I'm not working, I'm watching "It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia" reruns, which is NOT no Netflix.
Considering they market the hell out of their "Stream" content and than when you sign up find yourself unable to DL TV shows and much of their content they are really only hurting themselves. If they offered more content for streaming it would actually be worth the price.
While I think it is still cheap at the new rate they are asking for trouble raising the rate in one big jump instead of increments over a period of time. I don't know what other people pay for renting a DVD but in Canada it's 5 to 6 bucks at your video store or streamed from iTunes.
@DragonKingGaav.......I do not have Moonlight installed on my system, but "May" do so to see how well it works. I really do not have the need since i already watch virtually anything i want to. This is a question better answered by Nixie or another Linux user that runs Moonlight. Nixie or anyone else, can you help us out?
It doesn't matter what the jack the price up too. The reason they can do this is because they have NO viable competitor. HULU doesn't come close, The new HBO service doesn't come close, Youtube movies doesn't come close. So you will either have to accept it or go a HUGE step down to one of the MUCH smaller services. This is what happens when there are no competitors in the market. If MAC didn't have PC competition, MACs would be 60% more too.
@GT5Enthusiast Mac's are already 60% more cost for the same machine, less service, less ability to be serviced & their hardware partially disabled (DVD forced to slower speed to be quiet)
@ytgv3fc7 You, are terrible at arguing... I'll agree, macs are overpriced, but so are some brands of PCs. Alienware for example, they're terribly overpriced. And slower DVD drives? You've got some serious rearranging to do in your life if a slightly slower dvd drive speed is worth complaining about. Who even burns DVDs anymore? You just keep incriminating yourself as a sad, cheap, linux user who justifies everything with a "FIGHT THE POWER" attitude. You give us all a bad name.
@MrJaHorton man, if I paid for a DVD burner that was slowed down to 4 speed to make it quieter that's a huge difference. If you think that's worth ignoring you have no idea of value. How about if you locked down all Ferrari's to never go above 40 mph, that's real quiet, isn't it? And slow as a turtle. Makes a HUGE difference in utility vs price paid - FULL price for high speed. EVERYONE burns DVDs who wants backups. Fool.
@MrJaHorton I don't have a DVD player. I have stock charts & spreadsheets I use to predict market movements. I have tons of bookmarks referencing gardening, gold, articles about paper money, videos documenting police abuse in various countries and I can't rely on the internet keeping copies around because governments actively seek to destroy various kinds of information showing their frauds & violent crimes.
Everyone keeps calling this a 60% price increase and I just don't see it that way. Since the price for streaming only is staying the same the change is for adding a mail dvd to the mix. It used to cost 2 dollars extra to add the 1 dvd and now that price is going up to 8 dollars to add the 1 dvd. In my book that's a 400% price increase.
I have been a Netflix member for 10 years now and to be honest I have seen prices go up and down(I used to pay $19.99 for three movies at a time and that was before streaming). While Netflix has changed over time the reason I subscribed and

They might actually have a thought with out you controlling them. Scary Huh anyway people are waking up and their tired of all the new form of slavery How you keep them down and keep obtaining more for your self. Times running out We all know about your plans. What can you do blow the world up? It was a good run now its over
Kittyrevelution 4 months ago
If anyone on here s got the money lets get together and put something together. They just screwed up Utube is the big easy way to advertise. Hell if we offer our services to say angry grandpa, freakout kid for nothing just so they will endorse our product we will have more business then we can handle. Get the licenses from all the really good tv shows that netflix is kicking out. I see Blockbuster is trying to get back up and running fuck that we have seen how they handle things. Lets start over
Kittyrevelution 4 months ago
Who the he'll still watches DVD's. If yo like them so much buy them and keep them forever. 7.99 for streaming unbeatable price, Hulu is nothing compared to Netflix so I don't know why people are changing, just wait a couple of months and they will be back trust me I used to be a subscriber.

You guys are lucky you even get Netflix at all.
There is no Netflix in Australia and the average movie ticket costs $22-$25...
I mostly download from Pirate Bay as I don't want to have to pay outrageous prices compared to other countries.
wildsnappa 5 months ago
@wildsnappa yeah the main reason prices in Australia people use Credit Cards to buys everything.
narsplace 4 months ago
nixie im sorry to tell you this. streeming is cheap dirt cheep and the movies they get at netflix is old cheep or b rated cheep this is why blockbuster is bragging about how we get it faster than redbox and netflix. netflix does not want to send out dvds becouse it cost them a buck to mail it 2 ways and enevlope it cost them cents to streem movies( the price jack ) i heard that netflix got sued for not haveing subtitles and they though they can pass the buck to the customer they lost customers

Feh.
SuperMidnightJack 5 months ago
I only really use streaming, so it didn't really effect me. oh and 'accounting treatments' is a nice way to say 'accounting fraud'.
There are other options, for example I use Itunes to get stuff that isn't on netflix streaming and so forth. Mix up your services for what works. For me I will usually wait for a movie or show to be available on one of the several streaming & online rental services i use. It's still cheaper than paying the cable company for their on demand service!
rooftopeagle 5 months ago
It's not a big deal, you buy 1000's of dollars of movies every month. And you pay 16 bucks.
Pondebong 5 months ago
The feds keep increasing the price of postage,so netflix wants to shift to streaming only, and it reduces storage cost, also reduces employee numbers, saving the company money, and keeping our subscription price low. All you cheap people complaining will never find a television service better than netflix. Many of their dvd only movies are now on streaming. If your movie is not on streaming just go to publix and rent the redbox 1 buck dvd.
WestcoastMusicals 5 months ago

Since I mainly see my movies on Blu-Ray, I'm cancelling at the end of this month and switching to Blockbuster since for $10 I also get game rentals.

hvguy 6 months ago
0:58 seconds is the exact answer. Netflix would love to leave it at $10 per month, but they can't due to greedy content providers. Drop the DVD plan, and download what Netflix isn't allowed to stream. That way, a great company gets their money, and greedy companies don't.*
*See Showtime/HBO taking their shows off streaming to fracture the market. The PS3 does Netflix and Hulu, not Showtime/HBO streams. Why make people have to go to a bunch of different sources for content?

mozarthmoob 6 months ago
C'mon people! If you have problems scraping up an extra $6 for unlimited dvd and streaming movies then maybe you have bigger financial problems in general than you think you do and you ought to prioritize and probably shouldn't even Netflix to begin with.
What did people think was gonna happen? Nothing good lasts forever, that's a general rule you can always count on and, plus, Netflix needs to support its infrastructure. It can do that solely on goodwill. It needs cash.

DragnBludthrsty 7 months ago

If that is the case, then they need to have better negotiators with them when the meet the movie studios. Either they move towards streaming more movies online or work with one company (i.e. starz) and just do DVD rentals instead.
Cyranowan 7 months ago
As many already said, the final price is not outrageous per se. The trauma is indeed due to the fact they had a VEEERY LOW price to start with.
I wouldn't mind to pay $16 (or Euro if the service was available in Italy), but I am concerned that by having a low price for so long they indeed driven out the competition, so in the future we may be stuck with them even if they rise up the price again or they start to impose other limits (i.e. no longer unlimited streaming/DVD).

the ability to stream movies directly to a television is, to say the least, a gigantic leap in home cinema. However, an increase in streaming content results in the unintended consequence in needing less human labor in the distribution of physical DVD's. NETFLIX appears to be raising prices to cling to their already established workforce and not add to the unemployment numbers
colin28mac 7 months ago

FantasyJam 7 months ago
Guys here's a simple solution to the problem, just subscribe to streaming only for 7.99. and the dollar you saved can be used to rent 1 dvd per month at redbox machine at publix.I rarely rented dvd's even though I was paying for the streaming and dvd service.

@qp1e those food price increases have 2 sources: #1 money-printing. Paper is not money but you are forced to use it. Resources are real money (land, food, water, gold, silver, copper). #2 drought is hitting the Northern Hemisphere with a vengeance killing off crops in China, India, southern USA, Russia and Canada.
ytgv3fc7 7 months ago
The price was bound to go up. The fresher material costs more to obtain. Plus the shipping costs are bound to go up with fuel costs.
The argument about "it's the same price, who will pay more?" remember the cost of gas. We complain, then we pay anyway. Oil companies and politicians haven't been able, or willing, to reduce fuel costs. So we're stuck.

J053Lu1sHar05 7 months ago
Torrents have a legitimate use, but all of you are using them illegally. If you've got the money to pay for a movie/game/album, why don't you pay for it? You try to justify it by saying that these big corporations/production companies are evil, but you're still stealing from them, which is wrong. By that logic I should be able to go to my local walmart and take whatever I want. Stealing is wrong, and I hope you realize this eventually, before or after you get a bill from the MPAA/RIAA.
MrJaHorton 7 months ago
@MrJaHorton your not stealing anything. get this, stealing is taking something that can not be reproduced. copying is making an exact copy with the original not being modified at all. stealing ≠ copying.
ctoon6 7 months ago
@ctoon6 No, films/games/music, are all worth money, and they are the result of many people's hard work. By downloading them for free you are hurting these industries. Copying, would be ripping the dvd onto your hard drive for your own personal use/ convenience . Ethically, there is nothing wrong with that. But uploading them to sites like the pirate bay so that others can get them for free is wrong. You can justify it however you like, but you're still being immoral. Stop being so cheap.
MrJaHorton 7 months ago
@MrJaHorton I never said that it was a good idea, all i said was that stealing and copying are not the same thing, If i were to download the camed version of HP and the deathly hallows part 2 on TPB, i would have only copied an existing file, WB would not have lost a cent, because i made that copy at my own expense.
ctoon6 7 months ago
@ctoon6 - Rubbish. He's stealing a service. There's little difference between this and sneaking into a cinema to watch without paying. I know everyone does it, but don't try and make it seem like it's not wrong.
frostek 7 months ago
@MrJaHorton copying is not stealing.
ytgv3fc7 7 months ago
@ytgv3fc7 And torrenting is not copying. Look, I'm done arguing about this... If you're seriously blind/delusional enough that you can't see that torrenting is wrong, then good luck. By watching a torrented movie (a product which is worth money) and not paying for it, you are STEALING. That's just the advantage of technology, social recluses like you never have to leave their home to steal. People like you give linux users a bad name, no wonder companies see you all as cheap/ poor bastards.
MrJaHorton 7 months ago
@MrJaHorton copying is flat out not stealing and that's that. It's a fraud to pretend it is, period. The very notion of copyright is a fraud crime put upon us all. A torrented movie is NOT a product worth money. It's DATA worth $0.
Copyright & patent law are crimes against humanity to be destroyed at all times.

There aren't very many movies I want to see anymore and most of them aren't worth the ticket price. Hollywood churns out remakes and garbage more than good movies now. Good. The company should able to make money and if their capital and/or their human resources are causing them to lose money and they need to raise prices, so be it.
DawnPatrol21 7 months ago

While I think it is still cheap at the new rate they are asking for trouble raising the rate in one big jump instead of increments over a period of time. I don't know what other people pay for renting a DVD but in Canada it's 5 to 6 bucks at your video store or streamed from iTunes.

Compared to cable I still don't see the issue here.

GT5Enthusiast 7 months ago

Fool.
You give YOURSELF a bad name.
ytgv3fc7 7 months ago
@ytgv3fc7 And I suppose part of your "backing up" is burning your pirated movies so you can watch them on your DVD player? Dirty thief.
MrJaHorton 7 months ago
@MrJaHorton I don't have a DVD player. I have stock charts & spreadsheets I use to predict market movements. I have tons of bookmarks referencing gardening, gold, articles about paper money, videos documenting police abuse in various countries and I can't rely on the internet keeping copies around because governments actively seek to destroy various kinds of information showing their frauds & violent crimes.
ytgv3fc7 7 months ago
@ytgv3fc7 They are not 60% more. They do cost more but certainly not 60%.
GT5Enthusiast 7 months ago
Everyone keeps calling this a 60% price increase and I just don't see it that way. Since the price for streaming only is staying the same the change is for adding a mail dvd to the mix. It used to cost 2 dollars extra to add the 1 dvd and now that price is going up to 8 dollars to add the 1 dvd. In my book that's a 400% price increase.

I have been a Netflix member for 10 years now and to be honest I have seen prices go up and down(I used to pay $19.99 for three movies at a time and that was before streaming). While Netflix has changed over time the reason I subscribed and
