@bluejaywaay … LOL… I was actually thinking the same thing. But this guy actually had the goods because Andrés Segovia made him his assistant instructor. Also, Joaquín Rodrigo who wrote notable works specifically for Segovia wrote & dedicated this piece for Alirio Díaz.
¡Gloria a Joaquín Rodrigo! ¡Gloria a Alirio Díaz!
@Freddythemonk I don't really understand what you're saying here, but seriously, he's just shredding the piece. He uses it to showcase his virtuosity whilst ignoring every pause or resting point, no, just about everything this piece has to offer musically. And as a matter of fact I have attempted to study the piece, and it's by far not enough to be posted on youtube but I am absolutely serious when I say my technically flawed version with mistakes of more interesting then Diaz just rushing it
@Freddythemonk if you like this, then by all means, keep on liking it. Maybe there's a Cathedrale version of 2 minutes or an Asturias version of 15 seconds for you on youtube as well
@Wheresmyaccount as i said before , even the best have terrible days. this may be alirio`s one without a doubt thats not the question...the real thing here is we are no match to dare criticize a person like him, he is a master and a very humble one...no wonder why rodrigo himself dedicated this piece to him. regards
@armaosptolemaios I thought the "dance" section was pretty good, but i agree the beginning seems a bit...rushed. Like "oh god, I have to play THIS again..."
@Freddythemonk That's none of your business. I am perfectly entitled to criticize someone's playing. I was not insulting Diaz or insinuating that he isn't a good player.
And before you whip out the "could YOU have done better?" card, no, i can't play this piece. But that doesn't mean I can't tell when it's played poorly.
@Hektor88 mmm...you`re not convincing Hector my good fella. is a silly thing (i mean just wrong!) even thinking about feeling "perfectly entitled" to criticize the performances, career or the influence of someone like Master Diaz... even the best had strange days . No wonder why your comments out of nowhere.
Criticism must be something encouraging and constructive, with sense.... perhaps your "perfect entitlement" were forged for something else. Who you think you are man? Land it!
@Freddythemonk I agree he could have just been having a bad day. I was not criticizing Diaz as a player, simply this performance.
And yes, I AM entitled to criticize someone's playing, no matter who it is. We all are. That's how we get better. This isn't a masterclass or anything so I felt no need to detail things or be especially "constructive."
@Hektor88 Don't take me wrong Hector. I feel lucky this is not a masterclass with you since i have no need to go there either. You have a point with the first 2 lines and it doestn feel offensive of course. but Master Diaz when through a lot his whole life and career wich doesnt gives the right to make comparisons or mean comments coming from you or anyone else. But thanks for the comments anyway, yet narrowed still refreshes the reasons why i've started to play this instrument. Have a nice day.
In 1961, Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo's piece Invocación y Danza, dedicated to Alirio Díaz, won the First Prize at the Coupe International de Guitare, awarded by the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (ORTF).
Thank you for putting this video on You Tube. I have the vinyl recording of Alirio Diaz playing this 45 years ago, and still enjoy it. It was a pleasure to watch him play it on You Tube!

excuse me but this is pure sh**. where the heck is the emotion? Emilio Pujol said "speed is the enemy of emotion". well, alirio, you have still much to learn.
I don't want to be mean or disrespect the late maestro but the good things that did for our guitar was the fact that he made the world know the Latin composers of our loved instrument. As a player he was too sloppy, nothing special. My opinion and only.
That could be partially true; he had not the cleanest style, maybe he could even have had some behavior-related problems, due to his extremely humble and miserable origins... Of course I prefer other great players like Paco De Lucia, for example, or John Williams. But great respects to him go just for Vals Venezolano, that song is marvellous.
And I'm sure that, while listened by audio recordings he may sound a little "sloppy", in a live concert he gave a completely different sensation.
Pretty piece of music.A great musician makes the extreme seem effortless. All who comment must be able to present their criticism through a download of them doing a better job than Alirio and I would really like to see that!

Alirio Díaz has a very agressive technique, I think because of his virtuosism. But in this piece we can hear the musician, not only the guitarist. BRAVO MAESTRO
