I have watched several of these clips re: Jim Jones and they all have a common thread..how tragic it all was and is for those who survived and the families of those who did not. My question is, though, is what drives one to join a 'religious' organization like this? What is a person like who would join? Is this a last hope for the unaccepted or a new challenge or confusion about life? Why would one follow a man like Jones, who obviously had psych issues? What must one be like to be so desperate?

Black people liked that a white man had run an integrated church since the early 1950s. Young people liked his far-left social activism. Old people liked his free health care, food, and housing. Religious people liked his faith "healings." There wasn't just one kind of person who joined, although about 70% of the victims of Jonestown were African Americans.

@ferrierepc Also, it wasn't obvious that he had psych issues, he kept that side hidden and only those in his hardcore inner circle got a glimpse of it. The vast majority were working class families (mostly Black) who trusted their charismatic preacher and had been living in his USA communes for years before going to Jonestown.

The other thing to consider is that about 300 victims were kids who had zero say in coming to or staying in Jonestown- 100 or so were born there.

ive been thinking and doing my research and i honestly believe that Jim Jones planned on surviving the mass suicides. I mean, look at it like this. Had everyone been willing to go through with it, that would eventually leave him and his top aids. All they would have to do is survive, leave the compound and then lie about what really happened. Nope, most of the gunmen died. By their own hand. Because of this, only one person served prison time for conspiracy to commit murder. His name is Larry Layton, and he has since been paroled from prison. He shot several people on the airstrip, but he didn't wound anyone fatally - thought it was a very close call for several that he wounded, meaning their wounds were serious enough to where they nearly died. The conspiracy charge is not an actual charge of murder, though.

Jones speaks at length against the existance of God over and over again on many tapes created at Jonestown. Their community was self described as "Marxist/lenninist", and "socialist/communist". In the earliest years it was religious, but as time went on Jones and his community totally abandoned religion, had done so completely by 77 when they moved to Jonestown.
