I build and sell similar mounts specifically for my canoe and I have found that it will work on some kayaks as well. Only ask $30 + shipping. Not trying to make a million bucks here. LOL. I have 5 that I am working on finishing right now. I'll ship anywhere. Anyone interested??
@montananurse1 with a new battery you're good for a few hours of off-and-on cruising. more if you are all low speeds, but maybe only one hour total of max speed. unfortunately you really feel the decrease in battery after the first couple years - i gotta buy a new one!
@SittingMooseShaman not great on the lake that day.... however funny you should ask - landed my biggest smallmouth ever just yesterday evening, on the fly rod no less! this was in a different part of Massachusetts.
I just bought a 30lb minn kota trolling motor but i do not know where to buy a good battery for it. Can you please refer me to a website or a store? I would really appreciate it. Thank You.
I use a 40lb on my 16' mounted directly to the side with a couple blocks of wood. Been doing it for close to fifteen years. Two deep cycles for extended cruising, runs at about a jogging pace wide open, though I imagine with a better pitch prop it would run faster. Went as far as three and a half miles offshore into the Atlantic several years ago ( I was young and a little crazy ).
i have a sea eagle fold cat 375fc, hull itself weights about 100lbs, with equipment and 2 people on boat i move about 5mph, with a 30lbs thrust. this boat is an inflatable.
how much does your boat weigh? our canoe is 17', 90lbs. Two passengers, motor, battery, and gear is probably 300+lbs or so you are talking about at least 400lbs for my little 30lb motor to push - and it goes pretty good on a full charge.
hey man i was wondering how much time your battry last, i have a 16 feet canoe with 55 lbs trust motor. went on a big lake and it only gave me 4 hours of mid ot hihg speed. do you get more then thta
according to the battery and motor, we'd get 2 hours at TOP speed. we've never completely worn out the battery after 4-5 hours on the lake at varying speed. the key is charging it up properly and letting it run all the way down before charging when brand new.
30lb of thrust - Minn Kota motor. Bass Pro has a similar one.
I have the 30lb bass pro model on my 15ft Coleman and with a new large marine Deep Cycle Battery i am out on the lake all day with 20 or 30 percent left over but I carry and extra just in case. This canoe also loaded down with a large ice chest, poles, tackle, beer, food, bait-bucket, anchor & rope. So your fun can last all day if you have the correct battery. I use a 5 watt solar panel to get even more run time with a little trickle charge while motoring. Canoe'ing great and cheap in long run.
I like it! I have been thinking about the very same thing. I built a 15.5 foot long stitch ply pirot canoe and was wondering how well a trolling motor would work (like the minkotas at wal-mart) how much run time and what kind of battery are you using etc.? My wife and I don't like loud noise exhaust fumes etc on the lake and I was thinking it's be great for sneaking up on the big ones :)
Thanks! Ours is a 30lb minn kota that pushed around our 15ft Coleman canoe pretty well. the canoe weighs 90lbs plus two of us and our gear. The battery is the smallest one I could get from Bass Pro - the XPS deep cycle 48 - which only weighs 24lbs, obviously trying to keep the weight down.
what do you hook the battery up to for like a ground ? its a great idea but im a little confused about the whole situation

Looking at a 30lb thrust myself. What speed were you at there?
montananurse1 1 year ago
@montananurse1 this was in the 4-5 range, so near top speed. get a good battery and you'll be fine with the 30!
mikemcmonkey 11 months ago
Just spend the extra money and get a "AC DELCO deep cycle battery. It'll last you 8 hours off & on the #3 speed .
Stoneyman101 1 year ago
why not hooking the trolling motor directly to the canoe?
PANAYBACALAO 1 year ago
@PANAYBACALAO cause you cant with how the back is. its not flat

How much battery life/cruising time do you usually get with that setup? I just bought a Wenonah Spirit II and would love a trolling motor for it.

How do you secure the battery in the event the canoe rolls?
curranjohn46 1 year ago
@curranjohn46 tethered to the boat.
mikemcmonkey 1 year ago
does it drive straight when inline the the boat or do you got to keep it turn alittle?
johnny8462 1 year ago
@johnny8462 goes perfectly straight!

do u have a close up of the mount you made to hold the motor on?
I just bought an 11ft Sportspal canoe and already own a 36lb thrust Motorguide motor...
I want to side mount it.
Thanks

@TheSplashhopper hey I bought the mount at bass pro, but it could easily be made with a few pieces of hardware and a some wood!

A 50lb on a lighter boat would absolutely soar!

My boat is prolly around 65-70lbs, 2 passengers and little gear because we fly fish.
So the 50 should Haul pretty well, I cant wait!

This is a great way to get away from all those powerboat nimrods , especially if your on a small lake.
