I love this song Ive just reviewed please my first ever youtube video and mention this video in it everyone is very welcome to check it out. Im hoping to get an electronic music channel going where I review stuff like pet shop boys human league etc. Cheers for uploading!
The Technics PX1 is quite rare as it was very expensive back then. Today you can get one for around 200 EUR. The piano sample seems to have a surprisingly good quality considering that we are talking about an 80's digital piano here (maybe comparable to a Roland RD-1000, a Korg SG-1, a Yamaha PF-85 or a Kurzweil K1000). At least it sounds very nice in combination with the Emu II strings here. I'm wondering if there are other Technics pianos from that time which are using the exact same sample.
This is so marvelously raw. This song has only started growing on me in the past few months...........amazing. And Nathan Jay has a really fun remix of this song on YT.
Unless my eyes are deceiving me, Chris does play the piano solo in this piece. Just in a minimalist understated manner. Look at his right hand and twinkling of the ivories..
I recall reading that the reason the whole performance nearly didn't happen was an unconnected MIDI cable which someone discovered just before broadcast. Five quid nearly scuppered 30 grand's worth of Fairlight. Bonkers!
It's amazing how simple yet completely effective this song is! It's quite emotional and relatable. So, you see a cute boy who doesn't even look at you, so what do you do later tonight? hmmm...well, tonight always 'comes'...
i've never seen this in full before and it's hard to tell how rough a performance this was, they had massive technical problems with the fairlight before filming. for the kids "the fairlight" was an early music computer
Those fairlights are daunting peices of technology! I have never had the privilege of using one, those things cost as much as houses back in the day. They still aren't cheap, as I still want one, but man, those things do have a tone you cant get anywhere else.
GOD was he! Neil was a nervous wreck on this! And this is one of my all-time favorite ballads too -used to listen to it during the lonely nights of high school! ;-)
Loving these early (really early!) performances. I remember Neil saying he was extremely nervous during this performance. You can actually see his hands shaking slightly.
His finger was noticeably shaking during the instrumental bit in between chorus and verse. So EARLY in their career, AND having to maintain both the keyboards while singing is demanding a LOT from unseasoned performers! Chris looks calmer and more confident - of COURSE, knowing that the camera was on Neil almost the ENTIRE time! :-/
Isn't that AMAZING how far the Boys had gone, within only a few months later? By "It's A Sin" Neil was flying through it!

Maybe Neil is so nervous because they actually played it live. But great performance.

Look everyone! A electronic music group that actually plays music. So many modern acts have *everything* on backing track, ever see Covenant live?

I would love to own one of those rare Yamaha Dx1 keyboards. They run about 10,000 dollars now.

What about the piano solo - it was obvious that Chris didn't play it, just the chords. Was it pre-programmed on one of the keyboards?

Fantasize about the boy who doesn't even look at you, dream about him..., taking it to the next level - alone ;-p
(SAD reality, though!)

Remember watching this is in 86 and feeling for 1st time that there was more to them than just being another synth short-term group.

i've never seen this one either. I think what surprises people now is that they are actually performing live!

I've never seen this performance before. I'm plesantly surprised that they chose to play this particular song - quite an unusal choice.

great! though I think Neil is holding his vocals back a little bit. maybe 'cause he's nervous. Anyway, I love this song!
