I recorded violin music in 1963 on a Grundig T K 245, and after all those years my sound track man played it back to me while I was on holiday. I could not believe my ears, The quality was far better than my Tascam Digital 16 track..The violin sounded much fuller, and mellow. Does this mean that anoloque recorded the violin better?
I purchased this model in mid 1971 I complained to Sony about the capstan servo not working right for the life of my warranty they never fixed the problem they just changed the pivot roller and that was it,it was just bad design by Sony. If you remove the pinch roller you'll see a small pivot wheel that wears down in just a few months I changed it about 2 or 3 times a year but then gave up it still doesn't work today! But everything else is 100% it was a great model very high tech for them days.
Excellent clip! I have two of those Sony 730's. Great machines and mine have the same symptom with the pinch roller. The sound quality is very good of these decks. The solenoids are pretty clunky and well made. The power amp is about 20 Watts rms per channell and external speakers can be connected. There are aux. imputs as well for connection to an external amp.
Mine had the same exact problem with the roller not moving left to right/right to left properly. In spite of that it was still a great (sounding) recorder and I regret parting with it.
It was a high end consumer model, bothered by flutter and wow which you can hear in your clip. I good technician should be able to restore it close to original. They were gorgeous to look at - do you still have the cover. My brother had one and spent a lot of time recording old lp's. I wanted one but I wanted one that was truly hi-fi - hard to get unless you went professional.
Hey!, That's the same model my dad has. He bought it new when he was stationed in Thailand. Do you know of any sources (besides ebay) where I can get some blank tape?

I believe my father has this reel to reel. It's been stored for sometime. He has tons of tapes for it. Know anyone like mysteries?
