I began composing these USS Nicholas comments in the 3 AM hour (EDT) on Nov. 2, 2010—about an hour after discovering key facts on the same day; about 4 hours before polls were set to open for Midterm Election Day for congressional, state and local races around the country. Wikipedia: the USS Nicholas (FFG-47), an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate and 3rd USN ship named for Major SamuEL Nicholas, was laid down on SEP. 27, 1982. The date: the 86th birthday of U.S. Sen. SamuEL JAMES erVIN (D-NC)
In addition to being laid down on U.S. Sen. SamuEL JAMES erVIN’s (D-NC) 86th birthday—Sep. 27, 1982—the USS Nicholas was commissioned on 4/23/83, exactly two years before erVIN (578-52-3300) died in Winston-Salem on 4/23/85. The USS Nicholas--which has a homeport in Norfolk, VA—was constructed at Bath Iron Works, a shipyard on the KENNeBEC River in BATH, Maine. The ship’s sponsor at her commissioning there on 3/10/84 was the same Mrs. Edward B. TRYon (202-18-2027) who sponsored DD 449 in 1942
DD 449 was the 2nd USN ship named for Major SamuEL Nicholas. That Mrs. edWARD B. TRYon (202-18-2027 Pennsylvania) was the sponsor for both its commissioning and the third USN ship named for Nicholas is unrelated to idle “a life in politics” themes from the middle school 1980s, despite Sam erVIN’s U.S. Senate seat being in play on Nov. 2, 2010 as incumbent RICHARD M. BURR of WINSTON-SALEM tries to become the 1st person to hold it for more than one term since erVIN left it on the last day of 1974
