its not that hard to make one (a cheap one anyway), ya just need a CLEAN, narrow metal shaft and a small baord with a LED and a button wired on it, stick the case on and find some type of focus lens

The reason it is lighting matches is because the radiation it is emitting. I am a 100% all genuine nerd. And if you listen to me I will tell you that green lasers that dont have a IR filter (which the one in the video doesnt) it can cause the following

-Melting of eyes

-Radiation overdose (death from lazer OMG)

And -Internal damage.

So please be carefull when using unfiltered laser pointers!

Yeah this is true. This is done either by, of course pressing the button constantly or putting a clothpin or some kind of elastic piece of rubber around it to keep it on. Keep in mind there is a duty cycle though.

No it can leave a permanent black spot in your vision on your retina whitin a second. Don't forget this is highly concentrated light. If you can burn a match then you can definately burn your retina cells because your eye also works as a lense.

why did you use that lens? it will only [hugely] increase the divergency angle of your beam... it was just not noticeable on the video because of the small beam diameter and the short distance... but no lens are required or recommended for this.

now i will answer yours, yes it will give extremely poor diverenge of your laser but within a few inches you get an extremely small beam which is better for burning

unless your target is placed close enough to the focus, you'll get a beam as wide as the original one or wider, and in that case, it makes no sense to use lens. if you can't realize that at all, simply compare the time required for igniting the match with and without the lens.

that is a 5mw laser up-tuned to 100...not a true 100, which is why he had to use a magnifying glass to light the match. my true 80mw does it w/o the mangifying glass, and in about 3 seconds.

Not true. It's truely 100mW. I have to use a magnifiying glass because the diameter on my model isn't very narrow so I have to focus the beam down. Besides there is also a shot where I don't use a lense. The usage of a lense doesn't say anything about the lasers power.

many(most)ebay lasers don't have IR filters so then the lasers inturn leak IR(which you can not see) so you can go blind with out even knowing it

Yes that is definately true. Those laser often have no IR filter and they can start killing your eyes whitout you even noticing it.

A laser will not melt white snow very good. White reflects light energy. Dark colors will absorb laser light energy and convert it to heat. Also a laser pen will not opreate in cold (below freezing) conditions. In winter, I keep mine in an inside pocket to keep it warm.
