I don't know, I think it's not even really English, it's 'American' or something. Americans don't spell properly, they always invent new (& unusual) terms. To them it's a side-walk, an elevator & a 'close it' closet. For God's sake, it's a pavement, a lift & a cupboard!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not a COMPLETELY different song. She's taken serious liberties with the original verses and of course she countrified it, but the chorus is nearly identical, multiple motifs and riffs are purposefully recreated, and the melody is pretty much the same.
It's a fun cover, but essentially we're talking the same song.
I agree with Zach, it's a pretty close reading of the original. If you want to see Dolly take a song and take it into a totally different direction from the original, look up Dolly's version of Collective Soul's "Shine".
The more I listen the worse it gets. Country can be a great sound, but there is a time and a place...and this isn't it. Those violins in the background are inane and Dolly's pronunciation of 'I'm obseyased' - hauntingly delivered by Roland Gift in the original - is absurd...tho worth another listen just for that!...lol.
Dolly is amazing, but whoever advised her to cover this was somewhat misguided. Hope Roland has been paid handsomely for her destruction of an all-time classic.

English is a bastardisation of those languages and others but it has come to be a language in its own right and the English we speak is arguably the 'correct' one (not that I want to place any higher value on ours than on the language spoken by others in the Anglosphere) and everywhere else they speak it differently- including Wales, Scotland and Ireland not just the US, Canada, South Africa etc

i love dolly- she's the reigning queen of country. her recent covers of "shine" and "stairway to Heaven" were awesome, but this just doesn't work.
i think it's the over;y slick, nu-nashville production. she should have stuck with the rootsy, bluegrass sound she was on a roll with.
a minor misstep, but i'm sure she'll come back with a billion more gems in the years to come.

yes it is a cover... but as you can tell... it's a COMPLETELY different song and really should not be compared with the other song... admittedly the other song is MUCH better than this... but if the other song never existed... this would be a MEGA HIT!!!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not a COMPLETELY different song. She's taken serious liberties with the original verses and of course she countrified it, but the chorus is nearly identical, multiple motifs and riffs are purposefully recreated, and the melody is pretty much the same.
It's a fun cover, but essentially we're talking the same song.

I agree with Zach, it's a pretty close reading of the original. If you want to see Dolly take a song and take it into a totally different direction from the original, look up Dolly's version of Collective Soul's "Shine".

The more I listen the worse it gets. Country can be a great sound, but there is a time and a place...and this isn't it. Those violins in the background are inane and Dolly's pronunciation of 'I'm obseyased' - hauntingly delivered by Roland Gift in the original - is absurd...tho worth another listen just for that!...lol.

Dolly has written thousands of songs and has a more impressive career and catalog than just about any other artist. So, if anyone deserves to have fun with covers and do whatever the hell she wishes, it's her. I love how suddenly everyone acts as though this already corny song had so much soul before (not saying that I didn't like it). At least Dolly wasn't a one-hit-wonder. I understand if you don't like it, but we're kind of comparing apples and oranges here.
