Think about news stations who use the name "Facebook", or they have something like the like button on their page and it directs to Facebook, they get paid through that (I think, I could be wrong). But you have to realize that millions upon millions use Facebook EVERY SECOND, so, if your ad is on Facebook, its viewed by millions every second, and people pay a lot of money for that.

@blueash28 Go search the internet for 'how facebook makes money'. They use the personal data of the bazillion people that hand over all their rights to compile statistics. Those statistics are then bought by huge companies so they can market their products. Over time more advertising will weasel it's way in too. Youtube has in-video ads. Every online social site or video sharing site comes up with creative ways to capture advertiser dollars. That is how these 'free' sites can operate.
