Any talk about success in Afghanistan needs to include Pakistan at the table. Iran will not do anything, they are like the bully at school who is tough at school but has a horrible homelife. When you find out where they live you will find a poor, corrupt and crumubling infrastructure that could not possibly support a war with the United States, Israel, or any other country for that matter.

This effort will only succeed by having the Afghan people lead in their own country.

The countries who are supporting Afghanistan with troops and monies must hold their own contractors and the Afghan government accountable. One of the ways to hold individuals/organization accountable is demanding transparency in the process of of decision making and spending of allocated funds.

Without this bare minimum requirement by the countries involved, they would be better off leaving Afghanistan.

President Obama will pull the ground forces out of Afghanistan and use drones and surgical strikes and leak them to the news to show he is doing something.

There are boots on the ground in Afghanistan already, if the goal is to keep the Taliban from finding safety then isn't a Predator strike able to do that in many situations? They are relatively quiet and small and can strike quickly. Ground based troops tend to make a presence that can alert the Taliban.

So which is smarter? Having many soldiers crashing around Afghanistan where the Taliban can keep one step ahead, or destroying them at night with Drones that they can't even see?

winning in Iraq is a very subjective idea. To me, even having a presence of more than one or two military bases means we haven't won. Their government is still growing (leaving opportunities for corruption) and its little more than a template. As far as their economy, growth isn't much of an indicator. Of course their growth is greater because they have room to grow. No country with more than $40K per capita GDP is going to have growth of more than 2%-3%.

True there is a lot of work to do in Afghanistan. The people need to learn trust. Same as they did/are learning in Iraq. It can be done. With a big enough American presence. They can expell the Taliban in an area, then stay, helping the people to thrive, and keeping the taliban from returning. It can be done, we are or were American's. Nothing was/is beyond us. I don't understand this pessimism and the it can't be done attitude.

We believe that a democratic republic is the best form of government. Its what I was told was the best way as long as I've been in school.
