O.K. guys good points all around but George Younce is the greatest and most charismatic and awesome bass singer ever, and the Cathedrals have all the awards and more recognition than any other quartet other than the stamps and the blackwood brothers group so there you go.
@themo8pie lowest ever recorded is Rainbow of Love which is two notes off the end of the piano. i think its a Gminor. not sure on that but i think so. the video is here on youtube
One day, a boy woke up in a bed as a soul. He was trapped in his own body. Well, turn out ghosts killed him. To this day, there is a legend. Put this on 5 videos in the next 2 hours or the boy's soul will be released and you will be the next victim
@bassman3294 actually i need to apologize to you, because I missed a little thing: the song O Come Let Us Adore Him is the last part of a medley song called Christmas Medley, from their album called Voices Of Christmas (1988), once again, I'm sorry...
Tim is really great, don't get me wrong, I think he is probably the best bass around right now, his low notes are so clean. However, listen to those tenors, mainly Jay Parrack. They are so great. Jay is one of my favorite tenors and some of these clips on this video show just how good he is, for example 4:20-4:23, simply amazing. I believe a quartet is only as good as their bass and tenor, that being said, Gold City is great!
...and I don't see why everyone thinks Tim is so great. Mike Holcomb is by far the lowest, and strongest of any modern bass.. He does not try to show it out much, but I have it on good authority that he can go off of the piano scale, at least one note! He can sing in an octive below the bass cleft, and stay there. Any bass can hit an ocassional low note, Mike can live in the basement. If Mike were in a more high profile group, there would be no dispute.

So is Tim's voice range the normal or close to normal for bass? I mean a lot of these low notes have limited so I don't think that they would count has his traditional vocal range.
@snoopyflick Tim is actually a basso profundo, which means "deep bass". I actually got to talk to him the other day and he told me all about it. He also said that he only sings with his real voice (i.e. no vocal fry, only chest voice). True, it's nearly impossible to be really loud on the really low notes because of how much power it takes to get them as loud as higher notes, but these lower basses can actually get this low and still genuinely be singing the notes and not frying/growling them.
In my opinion, Richard Sterban is every bit as good. In fact I believe he's better. I've listened to other bass singers and Richard is by far the most consistant and lowest out of everybody I've researched. My brother, who's a bass player, says some of Sterban's notes are on the VERY low end of the bass guitar.. He's actually shocked that someone can get their voice that low.
@TIGERSDFW Not a bit of vocal fry. Tim's voice actually goes down that low. Vocal fry has a distinct strained, throaty sound, like Tibetan Buddhist chant, or Kargyraa-style throat singing. As soon as you know that sound, you'll never mistake it for anything else.
Gospel music is not or should I say should not be about who's higher or who's lower. One thing to keep in mind is that Gold City has always sang in higher keys because of the tenors they have had through the group. Just listen to these clips. Gold City is my all time favorite group. JD set the standard...plain and simple but everyone has their own style. Sit back and enjoy them all!!!
Uh, I don't understand why everyone has to try to make a competition out of it. How immature!! Just enjoy both of them and appreciate their incredible talents!!
i love singing bass and i do sing a little and i mean little tenor but who ever loves to hear a bass singer sing it probably dont matter to them . Ive heard a few that said they love hearing bass so thats encouragement to those who sing bass hey sing away and i do see those who sing bass show themselves ( if you will ) instead of being humble about it . I personally love hearng tenor and the womans alto BEAUTIFUL .
Vocal fry doesnt sound bad at all unless you havent mastered it, im telling you this cuz i use it at my church in choir and no1 notices. But to be honest, i dont think Tim uses fry at all, his notes are so neat and powerful they sound kinda impossible. Just saying.
What I don't get is why everyone believes that just because JD Sumner has a lower range he is this god-like singer that no one can beat. Yes I do agree. Sumner was incredibly talented with his low range.... but listen carefully and compare JD to Tim. JD doesn't even come close to the power behind Tim's lower range. Everytime JD drops down, he has to go so soft that whoever he is singing with has to back off. Listen to them both singing Rainbow of Love. You will understand what I am trying to say
@bassman3294 See, the problem with allowing everyone to make comments on youtube is that people don't really use common sense. A little careful listening will easily show exactly what I am saying. Its not all about the dazzle "OOOO HE GOES REALLY LOW! HE'S THE GREATEST!!!" Granted, it is easier for an actual musician to hear the details in music.
@sdray7569 very true. and like i told Tim when we talked. its not for show and the awesum low notes its for the Glory of God usin the talent God gave him which ppl easily forget
@sdray7569 the only reason he has more power behind his notes is because the mics that are available for him are way better then what jd had, just sayin
@sdray7569 yeah i agree...it does depend on song though..check out ken turner if you have not yet...specificly " On the Jericho Road" hes extremly deep..tim riley has a rich voice..jd sumner does have deepest voice in history in 2003 but he does have to lower his voice so his toncils can relax..
@sdray7569 Oh come ON! JD loses power sometimes because he dips into the lower 1st octave with regularity, which Tim almost never does because he simply doesn't have the range. Sumner easily has more comfortability in the ultra low range. Tim has a smoother voice but that's it.
@sdray7569 look at jds time era, tim has better mics, he is always mic'd so ya, jd was probably just as good, if not better, but everyone had to back off cuz of the mic differences between then and now
@simangel1307 A1? I'm pretty sure that physically impossible considering it's the lowest note on the piano. I may be wrong and if so then it's still not possible considering your age to sing a full voice low A the lowesst the the guy on this video sings is like a G maybe an F
Best bass singer ever w/o question. I also love Josh Turner. Tim is the man tho. His voice is so clear, vibrant, and strong. JD Sumner's was somewhat deeper but not as clear as Tim's.
If you think this guy is great, just go to the Statesmen Quartet and look and listen to their bass man: The Big Chief. He is truely the best bass singer of all time! R.I.P. Chief!
Could I get a list of all the songs in this? (Preferably in order) I usually don't like to buy music online, but I think I'll make an exception for Tim Riley!
@teslonelf 1. :10 God's Building a Church 2. :30 Angels From the Realms of Glory 3. :36 I'm Not Giving Up 4. 1:01 If God Be For Us 5. 1:21 How Deep is the Water 6. 1:44 Carol of the Bells 7. 2:01 Shouting Ground 8. 2:21 Where is God 9. 2:37 There Rose a Lamb 10. 2:57 When I Get Carried Away 11. 3:11 Hello in Heaven 12. 3:20 When He Reached Down His Hand for Me 13. 3:35 O Come Let Us Adore Him 14. 3:50 What a Great Lifestyle 15. 4:21 When He Calls I'll Fly Away desscription has the rest
@GooGobbler113 You don't have to be religious to appreciate religious music. As Douglas Adams once said, "The fact that I think Bach was mistaken [regarding religion] doesn't alter the fact that I think the B-minor Mass is one of the great pinnacles of human achievement."
I'm not religious at all, but what a wonderful voice! More vocal than the fry singers, not unlike the Russian profundos. Instrument comparison- if those guys are like tubas then Tim is like a big bass/contrabass trombone. What clarity!
Some of those songs actually cook more than I would have expected. :)

@Simangel1307 According to Genius Book of world recorders, JD was the man... He is also the person who gave Richard Sterban his start, he began singing with the Stamps as JD's back up before he joined the Oaks.
A God given gift. I hear it over and over, and makes no sense to me. I love J. D. too, just differant men.. But my God, his voice is unhuman. 143 everybody
You dont knowt what you say . Tim Riley have most powerfull voice . What Ab have Tim and what Ab have JD ? Stupid Jared if you sau this _ lisen a resonance sound of Tim Riley and you understand that bass is Tim Riley _ if you not understand _ you dont know that is Bass !!! Naive !!!
@The336336336 Correction...The only well known bass singer who hardly ever does fry is Tim RILEY (aka the bass you hear in this video). It's not fry, he just has very crisp sounding notes (which is a good thing when your voice also has enough natural bass to it to shake apart a building).
I found "How Deep Is The Water" on Gold City's 24k gold CD. I highly recommend this CD. It has several of the songs that this video features. Plus it comes with a bonus CD that's great too.
Yes-Sir! He is one of the best. Found another one of the best I had never heard of. Check out The Rangers Lonesome Road & Jericho Road if you like the true bass singers like Tim. Guess my top five in no certain order would be Tim, JD, George Younce, Charlie Gilmore & The Chief. I have been a fan of Southern Gospel for 40 years & had never heard the Bass Singer(Charlie Gilmore) with The Rangers but I really think you will enjoy the video. The Quartet is one of the best I never heard of.

A matter of choice. if you can be clearly heard without a mike you ARE a TRUE bass vocalist if not you ARE a phoney TIM RILEY is for real, also GENE MACDONNALD, NIC VAL, BIG CHIEF, HARROLD GILEY, RICHARD STERBAN ALL REAL BASSES dont confuse them, pick up the pace with the quality people dont be dupped by hot mike impersonators
@spiderchocolat3 Whoooooops. Sorry, I'm a bass myself and my teacher would shoot me if I used the fry register. hence my assumption that it's C2, a note I can scratch.
@Bobary8 no such thing as a fry register....there are fry notes but most of the time it`s a note and those who can sing that low consistently i would not call it a fry register...I would call it normal voice...sort of like a tenor who uses falsetto ...it sounds false.....just like the fry register sounds well not good......
@Gidenkidenk They are talking about soloists...if you think about, how do you define the best bass singer? If it's quantity, then it's Tim Storms. If it's quality, then it very well may be Tim Riley. It's just a matter of opinion...
does anyone know where i can get a recording of JUST this song?? i love acapella, especially when its in four part writing, and this is just amazing i love it, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Tim's good but Gene McDonald is pretty good too. Have you ever heard the late London Parris? He mentored the upcoming bass singer Tim Duncan of Signature Sound.

I like Tim out of Signature Sound as a bass singer.

Richard Sterban of the Oaks is clearer and just as deep. JD is lower and his voice is stronger down low.

@bobby63933 Are you sure J.D. Sumner is deeper?
Simangel1307 1 year ago
@Simangel1307 According to Genius Book of world recorders, JD was the man... He is also the person who gave Richard Sterban his start, he began singing with the Stamps as JD's back up before he joined the Oaks.
bobby63933 1 year ago
@bobby63933 JD's Guiness Book record was broken over 20 years ago and has been reset several times since then.

I can hit low A's and C's, but they're not very loud. In fact, middle C is my highest note before cracking. But this guy is just incredible.

It's fry. The only well known bass singer who hardly ever does fry is Tim Storms.

A matter of choice. if you can be clearly heard without a mike you ARE a TRUE bass vocalist if not you ARE a phoney TIM RILEY is for real, also GENE MACDONNALD, NIC VAL, BIG CHIEF, HARROLD GILEY, RICHARD STERBAN ALL REAL BASSES dont confuse them, pick up the pace with the quality people dont be dupped by hot mike impersonators

by low c, do you mean Double low C? as in C2? Because you're currently an octave off :P
Bobary8 1 year ago
@Bobary8 low C IS C2. double low C is C1.
spiderchocolat3 1 year ago
@spiderchocolat3 Whoooooops. Sorry, I'm a bass myself and my teacher would shoot me if I used the fry register. hence my assumption that it's C2, a note I can scratch.
Bobary8 1 year ago
@Bobary8 no such thing as a fry register....there are fry notes but most of the time it`s a note and those who can sing that low consistently i would not call it a fry register...I would call it normal voice...sort of like a tenor who uses falsetto ...it sounds false.....just like the fry register sounds well not good......
doudecad 1 year ago
@doudecad I'll take your word for it :P

@Gidenkidenk Well, if you really pay attention, you WILL notice 'they' have the same voice.
KoenBassoProfondo 1 year ago
@Gidenkidenk They are talking about soloists...if you think about, how do you define the best bass singer? If it's quantity, then it's Tim Storms. If it's quality, then it very well may be Tim Riley. It's just a matter of opinion...
The336336336 1 year ago
@daverpatrick100 J.D. Sumner isn't raspy, but definitely not as clear as Tim Riley.
tubaeuphboyemk4 1 year ago
@daverpatrick100 yeah i agree w/ ya on that... evn though J.D. sung lower, I think Tim is better

Tim's good but Gene McDonald is pretty good too. Have you ever heard the late London Parris? He mentored the upcoming bass singer Tim Duncan of Signature Sound.
