@musicguy713 She did the whole song in 1997--wrote it and sang it for Butterfly, but it was scrapped and later revived for Glitter. I also believe she started working on Glitter in '98, under the name "All That Glitters." That is her voice from 1997 Butterfly era on the song. It had a distinct timbre during the Butterfly/#1s era. It is a wonderful and oft forgotten piece, which is a shame, really. It's one of her best.
This sounds exactly like her voice in 2001, if it were recorded during butterfly, it would have been much raspier in spots. It was written for Butterfly, but sung and put on Glitter.

Her voice was heavier and bulkier during most of Butterfly, but that could've been because she was using mostly lower register on Butterfly. I think there were 3 or 4 instances of whistle register on the album, less than the previous albums. Let's also take into account that it was produced by Walter Afanasieff, who she completely dissolved connections with after her divorce from Mottola.
Her voice really wasn't thin in 2001, her tonality changed. The thickness you hear here is just her in good voice. There are some songs on Glitter where you could tell she had a cold (Loverboy) and some songs where her upper belts are crystal clear (this song & Never too Far). This was definitely not recorded in 97 because her whispers would not be quite as breathy and her upper belt would be more chest driven.

Uhh...yes she did. Especially during the first 10 years of her career. Chest belting can be damaging if you do it too much, and the evidence for that would be the fact that her chest range decreased in the late 90's. But when she began mixing, she started belting higher and with more clarity, though probably not as powerfully.

One word.....INCREDIBLE! If I could somehow manage to compose a list of my 20 personal favorite Mariah Carey songs, "Lead The Way" would be included amongst the top 5....at least! To this very day, I remain completely amazed how the public was led astray from the GREAT music included on Mariah's "Glitter" album primarily because the movie "Glitter" received such negative publicity. People automatically assumed "The movie sucked, therefore the music must also suck". The public TRULY missed out.

I don't understand how people say she sings emotionless. I mean, her riffs are far more subtle than Christina's, but that doesn't mean there's no emotion behind them. Just because she doesn't break out into a frantic yell like Christina or Aretha doesn't mean her songs emotionless. Period. And I personally appreciate that quality of hers.

Christina cannot maintain her ballad belting live like Mariah could in her prime. Mariah's voice also keeps its fidelity in any range she wants (super high soprano belting, alto crooning, falsetto ) and let me not even get into her transitions...you can't even hear them O.O

@musicguy713 She did the whole song in 1997--wrote it and sang it for Butterfly, but it was scrapped and later revived for Glitter. I also believe she started working on Glitter in '98, under the name "All That Glitters." That is her voice from 1997 Butterfly era on the song. It had a distinct timbre during the Butterfly/#1s era. It is a wonderful and oft forgotten piece, which is a shame, really. It's one of her best.

Her voice was heavier and bulkier during most of Butterfly, but that could've been because she was using mostly lower register on Butterfly. I think there were 3 or 4 instances of whistle register on the album, less than the previous albums. Let's also take into account that it was produced by Walter Afanasieff, who she completely dissolved connections with after her divorce from Mottola.

Her voice really wasn't thin in 2001, her tonality changed. The thickness you hear here is just her in good voice. There are some songs on Glitter where you could tell she had a cold (Loverboy) and some songs where her upper belts are crystal clear (this song & Never too Far). This was definitely not recorded in 97 because her whispers would not be quite as breathy and her upper belt would be more chest driven.

Uhh...yes she did. Especially during the first 10 years of her career. Chest belting can be damaging if you do it too much, and the evidence for that would be the fact that her chest range decreased in the late 90's. But when she began mixing, she started belting higher and with more clarity, though probably not as powerfully.

This is HER song, and she put alot of her emotions and passion into this piece and every note in the song has a "hint" of Mariah. She made it HER OWN. Celine can only replicate it (which is highly impossible), but she cannot replace the beauty that mariah has accomplished.
