People talk all sorts of shit, but they don't understand all the pressures and bullshit being a successful musician entails. All the crap in life that you thought you were avoiding by being an artist. Combined with speed and mild insanity = meltdown. I bet losing you shit in front of thousands is really theraputic though.
Weed level is level red critical. Boil salt water, put piece in pot. Stir that boy up, some more salt, mmmm look all them lil resiny chocolate chips splodin outta therre. @amyotjulien Because I have done a lot of acid and I have acted like Ariel Pink does in this video. I'm not some 12-year-old who's watched too much Adult Swim.
I don't understand why each time an artist does something weird, or unusual like this, people blame it on drugs. Sure, most of the time, it can be associated to that. But I'm pretty sure that the majority of the users making comments like : "he must be on acid" or such, never even tried acid. What happened to originality, and non-conformism? What if this guy was sober, and he did this just to get a reaction? I prefer watching him perform, than some boring "we've all seen it before" artist...
@amyotjulien I guess it's just safer to create music that ones heard before than it is to do something out of the ordinary, because there is a question of how many people are ready for something completely original. That, and where you would get such an idea. Plus, it also seems that people are strangely anal about "nonconformity" because plenty of people are shooting for that angle. Now, there is the question of whether the person's music or personality IS unique or just looking to be.
I dunno the exact circumstances or mental state of Ariel at the time, but in my opinion, when you engage yourself or your group for a gig, unless your shit's in danger (people are hucking cans of soup or lit cigarettes at you), you play the set. If someone is heckling you, you flip 'em the bird. If people aren't paying attention, pull your pants down and shake it a little... You know. Be professional and all that.
Looking at the audience...Yeah, I would've stopped too. Just give me the music, that's all anyone should really care about. As long as he continues to record music I'm fine with whatever he does on stage, although it sounds like he should just quit playing live. And just a little FYI, music festivals are the WORST places to go to see bands. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
Initially I was mad about this but it's been blown out of proportion. In fact, he actually does play most of his shows now. Most of his crappy ones happened before he got a steady band.
lol.. i dont even know how i came across this.. but while i'm here.. if he turned around.. i'd be like.. um ok.. someone grab another band and put them on stage.. I don't know what this whole "hipster" movement is.. but it's ruining music.. most music hispters listen to... sucks COCK.. for lack of better words.. there's a reason why no one's heard of the bands you talk about.. because they simply suck COCK.. hipster is so mainstream now..
Ariel is a spoiled rich kid who went to Beverly Hills High School. What would anyone expect? "Look at me, look at how ironic I am." I bet he looked at the crowd in Coachella and saw himself 800 times and had an epiphany. These trust fund kids have a terrible identity crisis but its fun to watch. I'd be fibbing if I said I want a fan of his studio work. Kind of reminds me of Spookey Ruben from the 90's
I understand Ariel completely. Dude's a hermit like myself. I would hate having to perform music to a bunch of assholes as well. He shouldn't have signed that record contract.
This is what hipster assholes get for worshipping "artists" like Ariel Pink. Go onstage, don't do shit, laugh all they way to the bank AND have the dumb hispter kids defend you as an "artist" and "meta". Like John Lydon said, "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
This conversation cracks me up! I really hate the double standard in the indie music scene. If Kanye West had given the same performance at Coachella there would have been a Huge uproar of people demanding his head! Alot of people didnt even want Kanye at the festival. They would much rather have Ariel Pink even though they know he pulls this bullshit live. Ariel Pink gave pretty much no show while Kanye West put on a legendary show. You get what you deserve i guess.
Meta performance art, and he's been doing it for a while.
Most of his music will not translate very well live and so he's all about being a showman and a character. I saw him in Montreal and he was spacey, lazy, seemingly depressed, insane, interactive, perverse, and perfect. If his band had a problem with his behaviour they would have ditched him long ago.
There are artists who do a more professional job on stage but are a bore to watch (Modest Mouse and Slint, anyone?). Pink knows whats up.
Prolly pissed that he had such an ugly audience...jk. Been to plenty of train wreck shows, shit happens. Get over it. At least he stayed on stage. I remember seeing Trail of Dead in Madison, WI. Waited all day through frozen temps. Appleseed Cast finished their set early in respect for the guys. They (Trail O Dead) took another hour to stop smoking crack on their tour bus to come outside. Ended the set early after an audience member could not recite their lyrics on stage.
I've seen them perform as opening for The Flaming Lips, it was an amazing show! So my expectations for this one were high, and after seeing it I was disappointed. But now I see it as the one time I've witnessed a show where personal problems allowed us to see truly bizarre behavior, like how the Gallagher brothers used to fight on stage. Still a great band in my eyes.
haha he obviously was on some bad drugs. probably DMT or shrooms or something. And it's hot out there. Probably dehydrated. And look how the man dresses.
What a huge insult to the paying members of the crowd. I will never buy a single thing or support this asshole in anyway. I'm glad this was my introduction to him, now I know to stay far away from any of his shows or music.
Smart move actually. If they had just played their set no one would be talking about them besides their already established fanbase. Now their all over the interwebz. Even with press like this people will still look them up and check out their music. I'm thinking this was planned and a pretty smart move.
@TopherBlairMusic Jesus. Not everything in the world is about marketing and advertising.
He was probably on drugs or just fucking weird enough in the first place that something snapped and he wasn't able or uninterested in preforming anymore.
@ThatObscener How old are you? First off no need to get mad. Second off why wouldn't it be about marketing? Sorry but music is a job. I'm pretty sure he would like to make enough money to where he can comfortably do this, any musician would and if they say otherwise they're lying their asses off. So it's safe for you to state your opinion on what happened but no one else can? If he wasn't into 'publicity' or marketing then he wouldn't have signed with 4AD, or any label.
@TopherBlairMusic It's sad to assume that every song has a commercial angle, that every outburst is a marketing ploy, that every musician is just in it for the money.
Do you believe that artists choose become artists to make big bucks or because they have something to say. I think it's safe to assume AP's not aiming for commercial success.
But maybe you're absolutely right and money is the only thing that matters.
"O! Ariel's going for that melt-down dollar. That's a good dollar!"
@ThatObscener I didn't say they were going after 'big bucks' I'm saying that every musician wants to do music as a career. You can't do that without making enough money to live. No musician wants to hold down a crap job on top of having to bust their ass playing music. Also if he did do this to gain publicity what's wrong with that? Who are you to say that's wrong? Every artist wants to get their work out there to be heard and enjoyed, not just kept among a small group of music snobs.
@ThatObscener ariel pink IS aiming for commercial success, just on a indie level. i've dealt with him, or at least his band, on a project (albeit a vinyl split unrealized) and he knows what he wants. one doesn't have to be going for major-label success to be commerce minded.. yr comment is disingenuously extreme re "big bucks"- of course it's not all $ but financial survival in indie is actually more of a constant concern bcz of the utopian naivete of the fanbase re: $ and 'artithtikk expweshun'
Why is this even a surprise to anyone? Pink has been having "meltdowns" for years and years at this point. He almost gave up live performances for good a few years ago before he got his backing band. People pay to see the spectacle at this point, considering that there's dozens upon dozens of horror stories about him being unable to finish his sets. I feel like at this point, it's just all about the attention.
@JcdJulz idk about that. i saw him play in chicago last year, and they SNNAPED! really nice rock performance. he played a huge set of random songs from at least 5 of his random albumns and executed them perfectly. it was amazing.
@sigmentfloyd Yeah, I've heard he's hasn't really been doing it after Haunted Graffiti started backing him live. I'm not entirely sure if he's even had a melt down with them. I know that recently-ish he came out alone in a show in New York before singing karaoke style for a song or two and then leaving.
I just don't think he can hack becoming successful and known. His aspiration, as he's said before, is to make it and to become big and successful, but I think it was better for him crouched over an 8-track recorder in his bedroom and playing to much smaller audiences. (love you Ariel)
Performance art is tricky when done in front of the wrong audience. You would think this audience is trained to understand something such as this but sadly (as evident by the goober in the Michael Jackson shirt) this didn't appear to be the case.
i was front and center for this performance and to be quite honest i loved it!! especially his non matching socks, and when he scratched his butt... he was really digging in there. :)
This singer needs some tampons, especially with that Top. His voice just blows and he cant project, he depends on washy reverb, look at the immaturity, HAHA
ariel is completely another level in the music scene. hands down. but i have to agree that coach this year was bust. majority are a douches who prob spent the whole time during his performence talking shit about his style of music. it's sad. but i actually applause ariel's take on coachella. this cats peculiar but like i said he's "another level". if you don't get him or understand him, just wait it out until you do, but in time you could listen to something else.
Why did you add in audience interviews instead of showing the entire clip of him flipping out. That's all anyone wants to see. Will you PLEASE upload the full video.
He was probably fed up of seeing all the little pricks interested in acting like they know everything because they spend 75% of their monthly trust checks on music and drugs. The people reporting in that clip make coachella seem more about being a music consumer than a music enthusiast. I would have had a violent meltdown, or spit on, and/or or urinate on the audience if I had to play for a douchefest like that. Douchella.
Give the guy a break. It's pretty obvious he hates performing, I'm sure he'd rather be in his apartment creating the music that he's hearing in his head. The only real problem here is that other people enjoy the stuff he's creating and are demanding to see it live so they can be hip enough to say I say Ariel Pink at the so in so way back when. Playing live / touring is a necessary evil, he's got to support his band members and everything, if he gets pissed off once in a while, so be it...
that was amazing.

Never heard of them but they look fucking wank. I wish horrible, horrible things to them and their fans.

This is not a meltdown. What a pussy. Is every band that is highly regarded by Pitchfork required to do this at a festival or something?

I just don't think he can hack becoming successful and known. His aspiration, as he's said before, is to make it and to become big and successful, but I think it was better for him crouched over an 8-track recorder in his bedroom and playing to much smaller audiences. (love you Ariel)

This pisses me off. His band is up there trying to cover for his behavior and it's embarrassing to them. I hope he moves on and they get a need lead.

I watched this happen, but I still really love his music.

The back up band was more pro than Pink. Kept on playing with out him. Go get him a rubber room.

who the fuck is Ariel Pink?

This singer needs some tampons, especially with that Top. His voice just blows and he cant project, he depends on washy reverb, look at the immaturity, HAHA

ariel is completely another level in the music scene. hands down. but i have to agree that coach this year was bust. majority are a douches who prob spent the whole time during his performence talking shit about his style of music. it's sad. but i actually applause ariel's take on coachella. this cats peculiar but like i said he's "another level". if you don't get him or understand him, just wait it out until you do, but in time you could listen to something else.
randyrod41 10 months ago
Why did you add in audience interviews instead of showing the entire clip of him flipping out. That's all anyone wants to see. Will you PLEASE upload the full video.

It's called drugs people, I mean look at the guy
Woody11185 10 months ago 3
He was probably fed up of seeing all the little pricks interested in acting like they know everything because they spend 75% of their monthly trust checks on music and drugs. The people reporting in that clip make coachella seem more about being a music consumer than a music enthusiast. I would have had a violent meltdown, or spit on, and/or or urinate on the audience if I had to play for a douchefest like that. Douchella.
killingtimes1 10 months ago
Give the guy a break. It's pretty obvious he hates performing, I'm sure he'd rather be in his apartment creating the music that he's hearing in his head. The only real problem here is that other people enjoy the stuff he's creating and are demanding to see it live so they can be hip enough to say I say Ariel Pink at the so in so way back when. Playing live / touring is a necessary evil, he's got to support his band members and everything, if he gets pissed off once in a while, so be it...

of course it was career suicide. won't see his name in the future with the likes of Bowie, Cobain, Beck, etc. he must have a rich daddy...
