Snooker is a great game to play, but rather boring to watch. Then along came Alex Higgins the young man from Belfast. A truely flamboyant character, who was blessed with a skill that was both revered and envied by many a player. He made the televised game more popular, the viewing figures and the number of televised tournaments are testament to that. He inspired a generation of young players and wanna bees to take up the game. RIP Alex
Higgins brought to life a sport that at the time was dull, grey and full of boring old farts! His style and charisma/attitude made people watch snooker again and who can forget the rivalry between him and Davis etc, i bet Higgins inspired more youngsters to take up the game than any other player, who cares if he drank, smoked or got into fights, that is part of what made him the amazing character that he is.........i would take 1 Alex Higgins before 10 of those boring farts any day of the week.
Northern Ireland may lay claim to three of the most naturally gifted sportsmen ever. This fella, George Best and Mike Gibson (a better rugby player than Gareth Edwards) - And Wille John Mcbride is still regarded as a legend by New Zealand Rugby people and perhaps the greatest captain of all time.
Look at the reception he gets! a standing ovation for a Belfast Boy who was the very best the sport has ever seen, a champion among champions, forget the drink and attitude, so what? thats what made him the man he was, let those without sin cast the first stone etc:.....................

Live a bit you'll see the feller in a different light, Alex was in his day a snooker genius and I am glad cancer didn't finish him off.

What a shame he was such an arsehole. He doesn't have an ounce of class in his whole body.
