    rest in peace

  • was he gay? just asking

  • @mrP694 Gay? No... She just looked like a dude.

  • 1:39-1:45 is my favorite part. I can imagine him saying "NO NO NO.. GET BACK BISHES, I SWEAR YOU FISHES CAN'T DANCE!!!!"

  • Wonder if all these actors had to be tested after this video. Once the word got out anyway.

  • he needs an unsung episode

  • He was only 39,a victim of AIDS in 1997,sad.

  • His hair is incredible

  • it;s 2011 my daughter 15yrs old fusses at me because i don't wear my like Jermaine Stewart she loves that look even though that was 25yrs ago in 86 when i was 15yrs old life don't change much . Jermaine had taste and class miss you so much in 2011!

  • THE WORD IS OUT...BEEYOTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wish u were still here...Love the Word is out!!! Forget that u & anyone was gay or not. Your music will live on 4 EVER!!!

  • R.I.P. Jermaine this was the shit..... love it.....

  • this was the jam!

  • RIP, Jermaine. He was a classy guy and a great performer.

  • he was'nt just a one hit wonder!!

  • who sampled this song recently?

  • Jerry Bell was in West Los Angeles when Jermaine Stewart came down the street, I started playing singer,"We don't have to take our clothes off...", which caught his attention, then Jerry popped out from behind the pole.

  • I always loved his music and hair

  • Great singer!!! as well as dancer!!! Love him

  • I LIKED JERMAINE STEWART,,,,HE DANCED HIS ASS OFF

  • I always like the obvious influence of Krafwerk and Art of Noise is in this song...

  • COME JERMAINE STEWART FANS JOIN HIS FAN PAGE REMEMBERING JERMAINE STEWART ON FACEBOOK IT SEEMS ASHAME THAT HE ONLY HAS 135 FANS ON THERE WHEN THERES ALL HIS FANS OUT HERE

  • Wow, All Jermaine songs have amazing base lines, they're just incredible, love his tunes.

  • I LOVED this song back in the day... This song is STILL a great song!!

  • I don't want to assume anything. Does anyone know how he died?

  • @kevikevbaby

What difference does it make how he died?

  • @NastyQueDawg97 Well, he seems very young here. That means that he probably died a premature death. Therefore knowing the activities that he was involved in that caused his death can help someone prevent a premature death in the future.

  • @NastyQueDawg97 People ask a question, it deserves an answer. Would you be so defensive if he died of natural causes?

  • @kevikevbaby aids....

  • @kevikevbaby Aids.

  • @BricktownBubba actually cancer...it was AIDS-related of course. The virus itself does not kill people, just what it leaves its victims vunerable too

  • This song used to be banging in the 80s

  • I always thought it said "thank you, good night hello" Instead of "that you and I are lovers"

  • It would be nice to see TV One do an "Unsung" Show on Jermaine Stewart. MISS HIM :(

  • this video is cracking me up!

  • is good to see successful gay singers ... thought it was hard for the ones today , if they made it in the 80s, they can make it in the 2000s

  • oh well i said what i said get over it i mean did that apply too you or did u just want too put you two cents so you wouldnt feel left out if so they have therapist for sinsitive sissies like you

  • @leewilla35 are you a fucking bell end? who says "sick" then has to define it? you are definitely some sort of spastic

  • @MtlkBMX09 I can go outside right now and listen to nearly any group of kids and they will say "sick" to mean awesome just as we said "bad" to mean good back in the days when this very song was popular. WHy's it so easy to be judgmental on the net, and even worse, why's it so easy to be dismissive and nasty towards others?

  • @diepiriye if youre gonna say it to sound cool or young say it, dont define it like some sort of autistic social retard for fucks sake

  • @MtlkBMX09 Sweetie, young people will be young people, & it just sounds creepy to demonize youth culture. It's worse to demonize autism the way that you do, which is why there is so much stigma attached to any mental illness. It's sad, just sad. I can only hear anger from you, not listening not compassion, & no interest in other's opinions, let alone the idea that you might learn something from someone else's opinion. This means that you lack faith in your ability to share anything meaningful.

  • @diepiriye oh god!

  • jermaine was a back singer for shalamar in the early 80's when they went to europe to promote there friends album,,,and he pick there cloths and gave jeffrey daniels that haircut..

  • listen to the guy.great music not a wake

  • dude!..we all miss you R.I.P. i still remember our Soul Train days like it were 10yrs. ago.

  • @MrRaskent OMG! he died?! i used to like him. that is so sad:(((

  • @lopearaceli He's been dead for 14 years...

  • Now this was the Jermaine Stewart song I rocked!

  • ,.,seen this dude back in 86 at the club

  • ,.,

  • I love how the director of this video wanted to make Jermaine into some kind of ladies man. LMAO

  • January 1985 Nu Wave R&B sENIOR yEAR IN hIGH SCHOOL, couldn't wait to buy this song after watching Friday Night Videos. Man those are the days Parachute Pants, elf boots Jheri Curls and Grad Nite in Orlando thanx for the upload.

  • this song is awful

  • I still own this 12" single record!!! One of my all time fav old school songs:-)

  • Keep it on the dl..? i'm not your closet freak..

  • great song!! <3

  • HEY I MET HIM BACK IN THE DAY...I AM STILL HERE

  • Totally agree Andysan. This was some great fun music back in the day. I still love it.

As for all of you retards and your religious bullshit. AIDS is a disease like Cancer. Anyone can get it. 370,000 children had it last year. Was it their lifestyle? Now shut the hell up and enjoy the mans music.

  • Leave it to YouTube trolls to start up a philisophical debate in the comments of a music video about whether or not gays burn in hell.

Lameness aside, Jermaine had some great songs back in the day!

  • I imagine he was HUGE in France, with that fashion sense. R.I.P. damn, he must have had a good relaxer! The hair!

  • God! I miss this man!

  • He did alot for Pop Culture. In fact "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" was voted by Glamour Magazine along with Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile" as one of the best songs to Promote Safe Sex according to Glamour Magazine when AIDS was becoming a major health scare in the 1980's. Also, he danced on American Bandstand and replaced Jeffrey Daniels in Shalamar which was created on Soul Train where he was in the Video for Dead Giveaway.

  • RIP, Jermaine! A really amazing talent.

  • man i dont condone the gay lifestlye and really who cares about the gender it's just fucking music and a great jam so get off the bullshit people and focus on that instead of turning this into a fucking gay debate

  • @ThePookie27 How an you say "who cares about the gender" when you say "man i don't condone the gay lifestlye" which clearly shows that YOU do care, and that gender does matter. It's just like all the undercover racists who LOVE Black music but would never actually take a Black person seriously, or worse they disparage Black english as if we're somehow stupid. You're so confused so I won't be surprised when you hit back with some nasty comment, pretending that these things are unrelated.

  • brown and yellow, what a awful combo, love the the song though

  • We been fuckin & suckin! LOL

  • The good old days. I wish they invent a time machine so I can go back in the 80's and re-live the disco days

  • Tell them Jermaine...some people don't have discretion these days...smh

As far as him being a "soulful Boy George," in 1983, he was featured on Culture Club's "Colour by Numbers" album and Culture Club helped him get a record deal with Arista Records. (Info courtesy of a blog I read)

  • In 1983, Jermaine was featured on Culture Club's "Colour by Numbers" album and Culture Club helped him get a record deal with Arista Records.

  • like how at 2:25 the synthesizer comes on sounding like thompson twins

  • Bottom line this is hot!! Jermaine was not afraid to rock it more artists of today need to take the same approach!! He was himself and no one can take that away from him keyboards rocking!!

  • Bad up the dance floor pon dis memory chune!

  • His hair is fricking luxurious. I am too jealous. Also this song rocks and he's cute

  • @Joeyarhino1

I LOL on that one! :)

  • if you are in love with somebody do not say anything because when you tell one everybody will know.( word is out)

  • This was mine and best friend sherry's favorite! (junior high 1984) She's long gone and so is he...Rest in peace Jermaine and R.I.P. Sherry.

  • he is wearing that FLAT IRON hair before it became popular,,,,JERMAINE is still the man. RIP

  • Go on gurl, do ya thang. I love this jam, but was Jermaine's shirt in the dance studio an allusion to Magic Johnson's Lakers uniform?? Just sayin' The colors are similar. Dark base, with yellow trim. hmmm.

  • Seeing this makes me wanna cry! So sad!!!!! What a beautiful man.

  • Thank you Jermaine for your contribution to my music library.

  • I do remember this song in 1984, and it was a hit Rest in peace, Jermaine we all miss you.

  • @KLYMAXX444 Indeed we do miss him!

  • @KLYMAXX444 My Junior High school days.

  • I remember this song when I was like 11 or 12 :"" good artist

  • I was 12 when this came out. I was somewhat of an old soul and I loved this kind of soul/pop music growing up! Long live Jermaine Stewart! He was definitely the man! R.I.P. Jermaine! We miss you!

  • for sure Jermaine was the man when i was a kid.lol....R.I.P... BROTHER

  • still looking for the instrumental mix of this classic tune! :)

  • Damn this video reminds me of high school.

  • God, this brings me way back. Kudos.

  • I was 13 when this was out and I loved this song to pieces. It's nice to see it again.

  • There's this Artiste named, "RedBird" whose biggest wish waz to perform like Jermaine Stewart!! If Ur out there, RB, It's time?! o_o

  • RIP ....great song!

  • Q: how can he be getting it on with someone if they don't have to take their clothes off to have a good time?

  • HE WAS SO TALENTED AND WAS REALLY NEVER RECONIZED FOR HIS TALENT. I STILL LOVE HIM REGARDLESS OF WHAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

  • Love this video and Jermaine Stewart Rocks.

  • Hey!!! Love this tune nice jam to dance to....mental note to self I must add to IPod for those gym workouts. *And just for the record, YES I am hating on him for having such lively, bouncing & behaving hair :)

  • Could care less about his sexual preference, that's between him and GOD...this joint is one of the best jams ever, I can't tell yall how many talent shows I break-danced in to THIS!

  • ditto ditto justice!

  • this beautiful and talented artist did not and never was a Michael Jackson ripoff!. love and miss him...and the fun days of Hollywood.

  • SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PERSON.I LOVE AND MISS YOU JERMAINE.

  • i love this song takes me back to when i first saw it on video soul, RIP mr Steward

  • Somebody (with talent) should remake this! It would b a huge party cut even now!!!!

  • @yshoulducare76 I agree with you on this.

  • Like on the real could everybody just SHUT THE FUCK UP debating about this man's sexuality I mean really doesn't matter now he' s been dead 13 years now just enjoy the music.

  • this song is bitter sweet for me......I loved Jermaine this song just brings back old memories in hollywood.............he lived a great life!

  • @shawpan1 i can definitely understand what you mean, i too have old memories in Hollywood. The last time I saw Jermaine was in Ralph's on sunset and Detroit one block west of la Brea; oh my goodness how beautiful he was physically and spiritually. love and miss him tons!

  • rip jermaine!

  • I love this song! I would love it, if someone like Ultra Nate or Lady Gaga, would do a cover of this song.

  • This jam is funky!! The 80's were the best!! Stop judging people no matter what jermaine stewart has some funky ass tunes!! Appreciate the post mark any other tunes you can think of please post them!!!!

  • @biggbadmilt dude ur just disrespectful

  • Somehow this song completely slipped by my radar when current, and fount out in 1987 it was a #41 hit. Good tune.

  • Jermaine Stewart was the bomb! He was a soulful Boy George. Who ever came up with this concept in the video captured his true essence. When he had that rehearsal and the waving of the hands, that was classic! Ain't nobody Betta say nothing bad about Jermaine!!!!

  • @romeovision2006 Agreed...very synonymous with Mr. O'Dowd

  • @romeovision2006 Interesting you consider him the African American Boy George, since right before he did his own music, he sang backup vocals on "Miss Me Blind" by none other than Culture Club, Boy George's band.

  • u know i Always Make fun of gays but im not on this,i rather just listen to this badass song

  • Gay or straight, This used to be the jam! RIP Mr. Stewart!

  • Comment removed

  • Love this jam. obviously sooooooo GAY!!! But love him anyway.

  • The beat is banging....

  • THE WORD IS OUT, this ismy JAM, i love JERMAINE

  • its ridiculous that people are to busy focused on this man's sexuality, and not realizing that this song's BEAT IT CRAZY HOT!! just like his hair!

  • Great song.

  • I am straight, and I love Jermaine Stewart's music...who cares what his orientation was? He was a great artist! The guy could sing, dance and had a definite eye for videography. RIP, Jermaine!

  • The guy could dance, sing AND write. And beyond all that, he could do all of it well. He should have been just as big as Michael. Sadly, he wasn't. He had a few hits (this one, "Clothes", "Jody", "Say It Again", etc.), but vanished. Why? I'm sure he could have sustained a great career up until the time he died, much like Freddie Mercury.

  • @sbrushfan he didn't vanish really, he worked with other artists like culture club and others and also did stuff with Jody watley . he was defiantly gifted. a pure joy to be around. he is well missed...

  • @biggbadmilt Please post the announcement when your son or daughter announces to you that he/she is gay. I'll be more than happy to re-direct your comment back to ya...

  • I love his music and I see that he is a flaming queen

  • I got that single on vinyl record. My dad would play that loud on our sound system. With the doors and windows open so everyone on the block could hear. Goodtimes. Makes me wish at times I was a kid again. Music was much better in the 80's in my opinion.

  • I love Jermaine! Wish he was here...

  • why are people worried about his sexual prefrence.. he made amzaing music in the 80's... we all love diffrently

  • @biggbadmilt I love it! The so called big man can give it out, but surprise surprise can't take it back himself!

  • @biggbadmilt I guess it takes one to know one!

  • Stewart died of AIDS-related liver cancer on March 17, 1997 at age 39 in the Chicago suburb of Homewood, Illinois.

  • the miusic is tresh!!!

  • Jermaine had great style. He also had that Michael Jackson-quality of being able to outdance trained dancers. It's possible that Jermaine never had any formal dance training - yet your eyes are drawn to him as he outdances the trained backup dancers. :)

He probably should have been a bigger star than he was.

  • @svetaswan Soul Train alumni had status as dancers...

  • @RavenlucJanie - yeah, but I'd be willing to bet that many of the Soul Train dancers - as good as they were - didn't have formal dance training.

So even though Jermaine had that Soul Train background, I still think there is a difference between dancing on Soul Train, & having years of in-studio, formal training. You'd think that people w/ formal training would have an edge over Jermaine when it comes to the type of dancing featured in this vid, but Jermaine more than holds his own.

  • The word is out was a cool tune...still is...rest in piece dude!

  • Ugh there were some ugly people back in the 80s damn!! Not speaking on him but those damn back up dancers and the random people in this video were ugly or plain looking. I don't know if its the plastic surgery or the make up but people sure do look better nowadays.

Anyways i know he didn't call himself singing to a woman lmaooo who you think u was fooling boo??

  • I always get him mixed up with Jermaine Jackson,

  • I don't understand why straight or gay has to come into consideration in the supposed progressive world we are supposed to live in. Can't we just appreciate creativity at it's best when it's offered to us without prejudice......?

  • You people ARE FUCKING CRAZY! I don't know why anybody worry about who the next motherfucker is sleeping with, unless they are jealous and want em yoself. WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT SOCIETY?! They don't pay no bills at my spot. When they start we can talk about who I sleep with. Until then. I"ll see you motherfucker at work ;-)

  • oh dam this was the jam everybody was wearing there hair like that and dressing like him RIP baby there one 1 like him

  • haha im straight but i love this music and this artist is great!!!

  • the question is the song funky or not,i'm just one person, the song is funky.peace

  • that note at 1:24. LAWD. I love Jermaine but goodness, didnt the producer hear that.

  • do you have the lyrics to this song?

  • all the cute men left are gay...in jail...or dead....gesh...

  • how'd he die?

  • hell I just love the music!

  • Man We need more artist like him today..that we can just enjoy and not give a fu** who he sleeps with!!! Miss you Jermaine .

  • @djseriousbizness...i am straight, and you are an idiot

  • Song was the jam BUT him??????????????????

  • I remember the first time I saw Jermaine it was on american band stand. I loved this song instantly. Wow the memories :)

  • Why would people who are homophobic even WATCH this video? You all really love this song and video that much?

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

  • Who cares if he was gay or not, the man was a talanted singer and dancer!!!

  • yes the word is out!!!

  • i thought this had the most def beat. You should have heard the 12 inch cut. It was rough. Never heard a beat like that before. Had nothing to do with sexuality. That song was bad. Let me see if I can find it.

  • He is so hot.

  • So, this song is about a guy's "on the down low" lover who decided to kiss and tell?

  • I have nothing agenced gay people!

  • there is only one good thing I'll credit VH1 with. with their one hit wonders special with. makes you want to check out more of that artist. and half the time when you come across that artist it makes you want to laugh at VH1 while enjoying more of that supposed one hit wonder.

  • I WONDER IS THE WORD "GAY"?

  • @mjj4liff Does that make any difference? He was a great artist and performer.

The word is ignorance! Would u like someone to judge u based on your preference?

  • Dang, this song brings back memories... love it!!

  • I DIDN'T KNOW THAT HE DIED!

  • He is a great artist lucky I went to see him perform bk in the 80s he is a nice man ... RIP Jermaine Stewart you will always be in my heart ur the best from the 80s RIP

  • Machai400 you bible thumping weirdo.. Jesus may hate sin but not as much as I hate people like you. And that goes for the rest of you religious weirdo's too, go fuck yourselves.

  • @eltommyboy ...do not diss the bible...you can learn from it...

  • I agree with xes666. people like machai400 give Christians a bad name. You want to talk about sin...judging is a sin! straight people die from Aids just as often so don't bring the bible into this one!

  • f u all who cares if he is gay. his music is still insanely good. get a life. R. I. P. jermaine stewart forever

  • @lightdrain exactly dude....

  • omg...in 2010 you still speak about the bibble to criticize a gay? C'mon..live your life and use your bible for something more important. You're the demonstration than religions are made for "people" like you.
