Potentially good idea sunk by the fact that the developers/builders had to waste a large amount of their capital in disposing of Court action brought by residents across the road who are scared of surfers and all forms of joy! Result was insufficient funds to complete the project as originally planned. As I understand it, storms during further construction forced the abandonment of the project. I have to agree that as it is it has "completely screwed up the Tay St break", don't mess with nature?
Dude, the mount has way more consistent surf than Boscombe to begin with, and the reef is shit, Clyde street is where its at, had shoulder to head high barrels so deep I didn't know what to do with them this weekend
@GeorgeL864 have to disagree with you the reef on an out going low tide is off the hook surfed it a week ago and shared some heavy waves would even say maybe the heaviest wave in the bay... solider then pikowai shorey... you need on 4ft+
I was just over at the mount and visited this reef, and there was a wave on either side of it but none forming on the actual reef, talking to guys in the surf shops they say that it is always like that.
Yea- sometimes man made things don't work out the way they should. Mt.Maunganui concrete filled tyres (or the equivalent) may have been erroneous however corageous. Providing local & overseas boardriders with a (swell permitting) reef formed "screamer" (unlike that stupid shielah who cant keep her mouth shut whilst worrying about sensitive teeth- easy, shut yer head!) however position, materials & location may require revision.More later...........
From what i've heard, the mount reef has had the same problems as the opunaki reef in the naki, and funding problems etc, what a waste of money, the mount worked awesome any way,
The reef's shit. We keep seeing the same footage and the same pics all over the place. It has worked okay half a dozen times since it's been in there. Waste of money. I say take the thing out, fire Murray Guy and his band of retarted "we want rate cuts" buddies from local council and start spending money where it matters. Like real environmental projects.
you know. this reef at mount Manganui, has had a bit of work done on it and it works alot more often now. needs to be over 3ft Hawaiian. had some sick barrels on it. should be great once its finished. and its like 2mins from my place.
Just seen in my local paper that ASR have just stopped work on a reef in BOURNEMOUTH, UK. Another reef and no waves. You can't keep using the same excuses ASR the way i see it your getting in it deep and better make one of your reefs work soon. or...
It is a pity to remove the reef as it looked to be producing good waves when I visited on 5th of September and the guys I saw surfing the reef were getting good waves. When is it coming out ReyStward
It will be a pity if removed as its never had chance to work properly as construction was never finished looking at Mount web site. You can't blame the reef designers for sinkage when its been laid on the sea bed only 1/2 filled for over a period of over a year (last web update on the reef site Aug 2007) allegedly because of a lack of funds. No-ones ever had chance to see it working properly because its never been finished. Bournemouth reef will show the truth one way or the other on art. reefs.
Well the reef is going to be removed as it has ruined tay st as a surf spot, talk to people other than ASR employees and you will discover this. The waves in your videos are crap. They are short and are not even particularly hollow. I have seen the inside of better tubes on the natural banks.
Hey RigStwartz the waves in this video are not so great but check out the waves I saw on the 5th of September since some work (apparently) was done, short but friggen heavey! Not sure what you mean by ruined as a surf spot there are a heap of waves breaking on the reef and around the reef, sounds and looks like a surf spot to me!
My sources tell me that you are Shaw Mead an ASR employee, which would account for th misinformation you are spreading regarding the failed reef project.
ReySteart I just saw some fun waves on the reef on September the 5th and posted some videos. People I talked to said it was quite consistent since some work done in May 2008. I think your sources may be a little off. Stay happy !!
The naturally occuring waves at the spot were way better, that wave is very short, slow, and incredibly inconsistent compared with the natural sandbanks. The natural sandbanks also provided tube rides at times if you knew where to look.
