Visited Mt. Mitchell for the first time two weeks ago. The new tower is very similar to the one at Clingman's Dome, but not as tall. No real difference in the view you'll get, but I can see how the old tower had its charms.
The new tower is supposed to be more handicap-accessible (I think). My husband and I walked up to the old tower in the dead of winter once and about froze our tails off! There was hoarfrost on the antenna sticking out sideways about 10" long and the wind cut you in two. Exposed flesh went numb in about 30 seconds. No wonder the old-timers didn't live up there.
wow, I'm shocked.....but not surprised. Thanks for posting the vid. The last time I was there with Dr. Bruck he joked about not needing it anymore (mountain top deforestation). I'll upload some of the footage.
Woah... I didn't even know they had torn it down... I loved that tower, it didn't appear to be in such awefull condition the last time I was there. That's really to bad.
There was nothing wrong with that tower. They tore it down to build a new one which is now handicap accessible. Sad though, the view isn't as good as it used to be. :(

I think they are going to put up a new tower in it's place.

I noticed last July when I went up the tower that it was deteriorating badly. I sure am glad I got to go up the old tower one last time!
