I was ten when this came out! In between listening to Stiff Little Fingers and the Skids, my Dad played me Gerry Rafferty , Van Morrison , Eagles and Genesis .. Now I have all those people on my iPod .... My kids think they're cool as well and have downloaded some of the above ! Talent is talent and can stand the test of time. This song still is magical.
This type of music is not dead it is just being supressed by the nobs who run the music industry so they can bleed the latest batch of teenagers out of their pocket money.
I listened to Gerry's City To City as a 14 year old, and every year I'd pull it out for one or two go-rounds: LP, then cassette, now iPod. Each year it grew on me, as I grew as a person. Then, Gerry died, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. A lost innocence--I thought he'd always be there. Although I never listened to him as I did, for instance, The Eagles or Aerosmith, he was always there. Until now. So now, I have spent hours researching this man. His indelible music. I'm on board, Ger
@nomadawn Feel your pain! Lost my Dad last year..lost Gerry this year! Gone are the days of drinking on a Sunday afternoon after the pub having a sing-song wi' my Auld Man listening to Gerry! :( C'est la Vie i suppose...
@Pearmain2009 Yeah me too; it came out at the beginning of the summer, and I used to like to watch the flow of the river too, when I was feeling sad; that and listening to good music like this were what got me through. Hope Gerry finds some peace now, poor guy.
Beautiful song, that flute part sends shivers up my spine, that's how good it is. They surely don't make emotive music like this anymore. What a shame.
gosh ! how many of you out there, find this song is your story, it cant be just me. But at my age of 53 ive become the person in a song on a jukebox, that I used to like the melody of , many years back.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
What a great voice and unique talent this man had! it's not until they're gone you really appreciate just how good these songs are and how effortless he performs them. Many of the top (Overpaid) artists today arent fit to shine the shoes of Gerry Rafferty - My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. God bless Gerry - RIP
Totally shocked,as a scot now living in Eire I have on many occassions tried with may I add success to convert my Irish freinds with the music from the genius that was Gerry Rafferty, his voice was totally unique and I still remember all those years back in sunny Saltcoats buying City to City & Night Owl on vinyl from Woolies, played them till they were scratched to bit's.God bless you Gerry and may you now find the peace you deserve. thanks for the memories, Gibby
The world has lost one of the greatest musicians, singers, and songwriters of all time. Rest in peace Gerry. Thanks for the incredible music over the years. Gerry's music touched so many people's lives.
Excellent title track from arguably his best album but he's done so much fine music thru his career. Here's hoping he can make a fully recovery from his current health problems. I saw him at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall back in '93 and the gig was great. His band were superb - Liam Genocky (drums), Mo Foster (bass), Jerry Donahue & Hugh Burns (guitars), Kenny Craddock (RIP) (organ/keyboards) and a percussionist and backing singer.
Love hearing this song again from such a talented singer/songwriter. I am still partial to the album "Snakes and Ladders". Would love to see someone put up "Cafe Le Cabotin". Too many folks have already put the "Royal Mile" up on here from that fantastic album.
was one of my fav songs and bought that album as a kid, everyone always played baker street, but the intro to this is amazaing and brings scarily nostalgic feelings.
A musical gem from probably the best scottish musician to date - Im grateful I got the chance to see him and his 15 piece band at the Royal Concert Hall a number of years ago - baker street and night owl - live - were oustanding
Thanks so much for posting this. It is so RARE to see anything from Gerry Rafferty. It seems Gerry was a little camera shy in the 70's 80's and didn't do very many live performances.
