Oh my gosh!!! What a great Christmas present it is, to have found this by chance. LOVE this score, & story, & I've never gotten to see a production of it. This looks lovely, & I THANK YOU! Can this version be bought commercially? Anyway, I'll be watching this later tonight. Yay!
Dream come true! Magical UK TV version of Bway musical classic never released commercially due to legal squabbles. Only shown once in the U.S. via PBS., so thanks bronxmom! These clips must come from off-air homemade VHS copy -- color & audio tweaked to improve the result.. Very rare bootleg now publicly viewable here. Devoted fans owe uploader tremendous gratitude for tracking down a treasure then sharing it with worldwide audience. My own VHS copy can now take a deserved rest.
Robin Ellis has a Facebook page now where he writes about food & life in rural France. His cookbook comes out in August 2011 in the UK: Delicious Dishes for Diabetics, A Mediterranean Way of Eating.
So has anyone figured out how to get a copy of the 1978 PBS version? I have seen many productions including the revival on Broadway with Daniel Massey about 17 years ago!!! It is truly a perfect musical.
Robin Ellis has other hidden talents. He's a keen cook and his first cookbook is being publishing in 2011: Delicious Dishes for Diabetics: A Mediterranean Way of Eating
(Constable & Robinson in the UK, Skyhorse in the USA).
This has to be my favorite musical of all time. It is nearly perfect in structure with an upbeat operatic feeling - Like La Boheme. I produced this with my high school in the 70's, and our ensemble was wonderful. This excellent BBC production is a treasure.
Oh!! This makes me soooo happy! Thank you for posting it!! I've watched it twice already! How can I get a hold of a copy? I really really want to own this. Thank you again for posting this!!
I saw this in Boston on PBS and loved the production. So many actors never get a chance to show off their musical talents. However, I was lucky enough several years ago to see the revival with Ruthy Henshaw as Amalia here in London (Fantastic!!). It is the most lovely and charming (and romantic) story and the music is enchanting.
Where did you get a copy? I would love to own it, as the quality on you tube is not the best - but it is really good to see it again.
I performed this in highschool many years ago, playing the part of Arpad. Someone had this on tape back then and showed it to me. I've been hunting vigorously for it ever since. Thank you so much for posting this. I'd all but given up on ever seeing it again.
Yes..I actually caught that! (I used to work with an European born lady who would humbly proclaim herself to be "just an ordinary clark" every once in a while and my other co-workers would tell her she was mispronouncing the word in their Noo Yawk accents...)
Never seen or heard of this. Enjoyed it very much no idea Robin Ellis from Poldark could sing. Thank you. P.S now if only someone would download the film 'Why not stay for Breakfast' with Gemma Craven i'd really appreciate that.

Years ago on E-bay. I would've loved to have seen Ruthie Henshaw in this role. I saw a clip of her singing "Ice Cream" once and she was fantastic

If you're able to make it to Ashland by the end of October, Oregon Shakespeare Festival is doing a production of it this season. It's adorable! :)

Interesting lyric re-write - Original lyric: "Wouldn't it be something if we all took off from work
Leaving Mr. Maraczek without a single clerk"
But in England, "clerk" is pronounced "clark", so it wouldn'trhyme with "work".
