  • Why piss off Apple by releasing an IPad thats actually useful when you can cooperate and share the cake? God, that's a thing thing I hate microsoft for. And I guess the courier's designer thought the same thing when he quitted his job soon after that.

  • Speaking of "Bringing great ideas to life"...........hint hint.

  • Woud've been first and only tablet I'd buy. Why would you close down such a great project?:/

  • The worst part is that instead of this, we now get a Metro UI Windows 8 on stock tablets, and a sucky new OS for deskops, all in one!

  • This would have actually been useful. It would make sense in a business setting, as well as a school setting. I think microsoft was fearful about releasing this cause it could wash windows 8 out of the tablet market as well as possibly fail like the touchpad.

  • Jesus Christ !! Now my brand new iPad 2, looks as toy for kinds !!

  • cancelled by Steve Balmer, before IPAD came out.... Way to go Balmer you fail hardcore if you got this out Ipad wouldn't have took off like it had

  • Looks nice but not too intuitive. But the design is nice enough that I would have liked to have seen it made and given a chance.

  • I own a samsung 10.1 tablet and the hp touchpad. This device would have blown them away. WOW!

  • Bill Gates is a fucking idiot. This device is so damn simple. An absolute shame. I agree with Jobs. Microsoft has no concept of innovation. Bloatware. Damn. I want this device. The pocket, graph paper easy integration with map software and contacts. WOW. This is way to nice a product for Microsoft. A damn shame.

  • it was cancelled becos the video showed google maps in the beginning

  • the real ipad killer that never made it to the market.

  • This was a huge failure for microsoft, and for human productivity- no less.

For microsoft because had they released it, even if it had bugs, it would change people concepts of tablets.

And for human productivity because Apple came out with the ipad- which the entire tablet market copied - which is nothing more than an expensive catalog, with extremely limited ability to create anything with it.

    sad.

  • Bullshit

  • this looks terrible. a superfluous gimmick peripheral and a bezel down the middle of the screen, how wonderful.

  • I adore this concept, it is such as shame they cancelled it. for those who are worried about styluses because it is a dual screen I am sure you could turn one to a key board and the other, as the screen.

  • even thou is pretty innovating.. you would need a course to learn how to do all that crap...

If they can find a way to make it very obvious/simple on how to use this thing it would be nice..

Just watching that reminds me of when i started using photoshop you i had NO idea what tha hell anything meant.

    Innovating indeed thou.

  • @cameron20020 Writing with a stylus is far more natural, and preferred by most. That's why PDAs were so big in the 90s.

  • thumbs up so more people can see this... does anyone know what font they're using??? I would kill to get it :)

  • I cant believe it, that they cancelled it... WHY ??

It's a hundred times better than the iPad. And Steve Jobs know it ... and you too !!!

  • writing with a pen??

come on, most would take an on sceen keyboard over a pen anyday!

  • Yet again MS dont get it-this is all work based. The reason why the iPad is so successful if that its about work and PLAY. People dont get excited about work tools, they just get them because they have to. Whereas play tools, they long after, they WANT them. So Movies, Internet, Social are the things that make people WANT a gadget, not a souped up diary and organiser. MS just will not let go of the fact they made a packet from Office, which is over priced and plenty of alternates out there now

  • i can't believe these fucktards that think this thing it's real. IT'S A COMPUTER ANIMATION!!! this fucking joke was designed to break the heat that ipad has, nothing more and nothing less. apple gives u actual WORKING products while M$ it's giving u animations and prototypes that DON'T EXIST. and u still hate apple. this was not cancelled, because there is nothing to cancel, it didn't exist. if u want this thing from m$, just wait 498 more years.

  • ipad got owned.

  • OMG, if they dont announce this at CES 2011 i will cut someone!!!

  • @JWumboTravel Sorry, it was killed by Bill Gates three weeks before the original iPad launched. Why? because it competed against core cash cows like Office, Exchange etc. Go figure.

  • @ascolti Read some articles about it. Bill gates didn't like it as the dev. team was trying to make a tablet that complimented computers, meaning that it was not intended as a replacement. As such there were many features that weren't there. The ipad on the other hand did have many features which let some people leave their laptops behind. It's a shame as this looked really great.

  • The only problem I can see in this is the handwriting recognition. I cant read my hand writing half the time. No chance a computer will.

I would so have this over my ipad though. Without a second thought.

  • I'm not surprised this turned out to be vaporware after all. There are actually a lot of interface problems with the software as it's presented here that would be completely unintuitive and strange if you were to actually ever use this thing, starting from the strange interplay of the pen input and the touch input and going from there.

  • I saiddddddddddd Dammmmmmmmmmm......... top of the line........this is what I expect from MS.... take it to them (apple) that is this is what I call competition...mannnn I sure hope MS can really come out with this bad boy" this is what they should have done with windows phone 7 " on HTC nexus one size.....yeahhhh

  • Someone PLEASE get this girl a throat lozenge.

  • Most people don't generally use a stylus with the same accuracy as a pen. The small, detailed writing just doesn't happen on digital displays.

Also, as all this is a software demo, it can all be created for the iPad. The only feature this Courier concept has over the iPad is the camera. Why the gap in the middle of the screen?

This vague fictional demo-only UI with no consideration of hardware engineering or practicality would be unrecognizable as a shipping product. AFAIK, the iPad is real.

  • @samgod

    1. I use a stylus on a Wacom tablet (whose digitizers are used in the capactive/pressure-sensitive displays HP produces) quiet well for writing when I want to.

    2. iPad does not have a capacitive/resistive display and can not use stylus interaction, so it's not all software here.

    3. The gap is because it folds in half.

  • I don't think that the courier should depend too much on writing maybe a keyboard as an option... you might have bad writing or lose your pen.

  • Too bad it's cancelled

  • This project has been shelved for the time being.

  • I have an iPad. Fine for entertainment: games, movies, etc. Otherwise, it blows.

  • wow, the second good product mircosoft has made isnt going to happen, what else could we expect from a company who's genius left.

  • This was just a test project. Microsoft announced in April they won't be making Courier.

  • Does anyone know any updated info on this awesome-ness?!!!!!

  • what are the programs on this thing called? APPS!?!?! lol fail.

but lets stop the apple fanboying, this thing seems to have some great ideas, it may be a good competitor...

  • @h4x0y

it's not a competitor period, it doesn't and will not ever exist.

  • @AdamKaoru would like a little explanation please. why not a competitor? suddenly not that the ipad is released, other companies came with alot of prototypes, seems to me like competitors.

  • @h4x0y

This prototype was leaked way before the iPad came out. Steve Ballmer has already publicly acknowledged it, and confirmed that they are not working on it at all.

  • @AdamKaoru there is a difference between leaked prototypes, announced products and products that are already out. This prototype may have leaked before the ipad came out, but there were rumors about an apple tablet way before that. In fact, Jobs admitted recently that apple was working on a tablet even before they were working on the iphone.

  • @h4x0y

My point had nothing to do with "who came first", I couldn't care less about that. My point was that the courier is not a competitor for the iPad because it does not and will not exist.

  • apple's icons suck. i hate apple's coloring

  • i bet this wont come out.. and if it does it wont be as easy to use as this video makes it seem...

  • this is for people who have WAY TO MUCH TIME on their hands and need props to make them feel important.

  • AND it is discontinued hhahaha ipad wins

  • @bluenerve it wasn't discontinued. they never planned on building it any time soon, it was just a leaked idea. It can still happen, and probably will in a few years.

  • This looks more suitable for the business user & have failed to show how this type of tablet would be good for domestic use. The iPad on the other hand has had both side of the fence covered. Don't get me wrong it looks great but how am I going to use it at home? I am after a quick media tablet that can surf the net, quick reference to appointments, watch video, play games, just general entertainment really. I hope Microsoft can really go somewhere with this as Apple need a bit of competition.

  • I need this. I need this thing. I need it D:

  • It will not come :S

  • It is Bad copy of ipad

  • Not gonna lie, looks pretty cool but those scums at Microsoft just announced today that they forfeit the COURIER project. I'm heartbroken, this could have been a technological revolution except for that fact that the project has been discontinued. I know those Microsoft scums did it to slow down mass purchase of the Apple Ipad. I love apple, Ipad looks good...but not as cool as this NOW non-existent thing. I'm hoping Apple will create something just as cool as this so I can purchase it ASAP!

  • this looks pretty amazing! does this close like a book? it probly does but just wondering

  • god. im already longing to buy it.

  • Problem is as always that this will suck because the hardware and software isn't integrated well enough. And who wants to write using pens, c'mon?

  • @avasol Hmmm, pretty sure everyone still writes with pens and pencils...

And if you're referring to the "pen" that's used on device for input, that's a stylus buddy.

  • i hope this battery life is 16 hours, cause thats the amount of time ill be using it, for everything literally, while im awake.

  • its nice to see demos but what about real action? i would like the see the screen's responsiveness in real time ... then i can compare it to the ipad

  • wow, nice.

  • Let's hope MS is serious about Courier. Anyone remember The Surface? This would be an incredible tool for higher ed, especially Medical Schools.

  • omg, im a total tech geek and i want this. i thought the ipad was a total disappointment. this looks way cooler and from what i've heard its a lot smaller when closed. plus, its sleeker and more practical.

omg with handwriting recognition as well. i cant wait to buy this and bring it to class LOL

  • You know I can actually see this comming out sooner than everybody thinks, I mean MSI already portrayed there dual screen tablet at CES 2010 and Microsoft has said a Q3 or Q4 release date, but consistancy is something I want since Microsoft usually misses their whole product on release but I don't wantoto get too anxious as the last time that happened Apple dropped a dump on us.

  • I'm blown away. I'm a techie and if it works as good as the video suggests, I'm all over it!!! Unblelievable this comes from M$

  • realy

  • besides the Home button which looks almost like a copyright infringement but its not...other than that one thign this is a lot better then ipad...but i do hate them for copying their style.

  • what? there were rumors, pictures and videos of thing way before the ipad showed its face...

  • graytmann: copying what? If this is a copy of iPad, then iPad is a copy of Microsoft Surface.. XD

Touchpads aren´t really Apples idea.. and then again, everything in the world is more or less copied..

  • looks so much more useful than the ipad (and I'm typing this comment on my macbook pro...).

maybe at last WACOM will have some competition....

we artists want more tools !

  • Do you know how useful this would be in college? Fucking 1 notebook for every class in one device.

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with you so much. Im starting college in the fall and i hope this is out by then or soon so i can use it.

  • @TehChaps its awesome, but definitely won't be out by fall. however, by the holidays, windows phone 7 will be out on sale, and if you dont like that, probably the iphone 4G will.

  • @matthewkol186 already have the iphone 3G, and i dont care if its not out till the holidays, just sometime in my first year

  • Pure fake until they sell it. Ipad will be at the stores in less than a month. Microsoft is too late again.

  • @ undoit1138, congrats Apple for rushing to the market with an uninspiring giant iPod Touch with a giant bezel, no camera, no flash, and no USB connector.

Even if the courier doesn't exist, an HP slate running windows 7 or just a plain old netbook is far more useful than the overhyped POS iPad. Have fun buying your $699 iPod Touch.

  • iPad Rules !!!!

  • this looks amazingly useful...(unlike the ipad)

just image it for university, you could just carry round this instead of using stacks and stacks of paper and all your notes would be neat and organised

  • It looks great, but how well are the 2 screens going to work when I decide I want to watch a movie? can I fold one underneath so its out of the way? can I make it like a laptop where one is a keyboard and the other is propped up?

  • I actually think MS can pull this one off. I hope they learned something from the user friendliness ans simplicity of Apple. If MS takes its time to make this it will become a huge hit, though only for people who need it. The target audience for the iPad is much bigger i think. the iPad is for business people and has a more general target where the Courier will really be a gadget for (all sorts of) designers. If the price is better than iPad's I'll definitely get it!

  • TheGeeksHere definitely want this!

  • @T4Taco , i agree it does hav more and smooth features than the ipad..bt the truth is that not everyone is going to use it the way it is shown in the video..n also it wud be great if it existed in reality..i personally dnt think MS can pull this off :S

  • looks like its only useful for artists/desginers...doesnt hav many features the ipad has..looks a bit overcomplicated..i dnt this can be achieved :S

  • @Prince Janz , It has more features than the iPad actually.

Name one thing it doesn't have?

The iPad doesn't have a camera.

  • One thing it doesn't have? Existence.

  • @ jmsaltzman, The iPad was speculated and massively masturbated to 2 years before it even "existed".

Your point is taken, but I will laugh hysterically when the Courier is unveiled at CES 2011 and all you iPad losers are still trying to fiddle with your iPod Touch XXL.

  • True, but Apple said *nothing* about the iPad until it was ready for a live demo, with specs, pricing, and availability all laid out.

If anybody wants awesome products coming out of those brilliant MS Research minds, I do, but the company consistently demonstrates an inability to deliver its own original ideas.

Care to make a friendly wager on your CES 2011 prediction? PM me. BTW unveiling without pricing and availability means I win.

  • @jmsaltzman this is in reply to your comment about the microsoft courier. btw, the ipad was rumored to be in the making for 10 years before it was actually created, and the courier the same. also, this definitely won't be out until 2012.

  • @matthewkol186 rumored != demoed. Apple delivers, MS spreads FUD. For example, these Courier teases-- official MS-issued videos btw-- are intended to temper some of the iPad excitement. Ultimately though, they just makes MS look like a big, clumsy coattail rider. 2012? Too late as usual/expected.

  • @T4Taco [Laughing hysterically] over here.

  • @jmsaltzman Doesn't matter, my second point was an HP slate. Even better, now that they bought Palm, they can throw on WebOS on there and we can experience true multitasking on a gorgeous tablet.

How's your iPad? You miss 80% of the web's video and gaming content yet without flash?

  • uses a pen .. fail

  • A pen to tablets is a mouse to computers.

    Finger painting is for children.

  • plz stop using stylus!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it look better and more usefull thann Ipad!

  • way more use than a ipad IMO

  • VAPOR. People, quit begging for something that doesn't exist. If MS believed in this concept, they'd show you a working prototype.

  • i need this so bad!

  • overcomplicated in simplicity ....

i mean howdo i know which gesture works for each feature , when i cannot see the options ??? learn from apple ...

  • RTFM.

  • I've never seen anything that good! I'd love to see all of Microsoft's research in one product, it would be amazing.

  • i love apple but ill take this over the ipad any day .

  • @bukon90

Yeah... what a pisser tho, that this is (yet another) product THAT WILL NEVER EVER EXIST, huh? Totally makes your point look INTELLIGENT, eh? This video is nothing but a big M$ WET DREAM. A "Man we WISH we could do something like this... but we suck nads" video.

THIS BULLSHIT DOESN'T AND NEVER *WILL* EXIST!!

Yet another gullible M$ lemming... how sad.

  • @bukon90 me too!

  • @bukon90 how do you supose to take pictures watch Applesoldier latest video and you would hte this tablet

  • amazing one...i want it

  • Looks pretty amazing.

  • I'm skeptical about demos that are done with animation as opposed to a working prototype. If MS can actually produce this device that worked as this demonstration suggests then it will be very cool. I'll only believe it when I see a REAL working prototype though.

  • This is just something so amazing.. I wouldn't need that journal thing but thats just too cool like iPad.

  • This looks like a gadget that might actually empower me instead of being a distracting burden like my laptop or MP3 players are.

  • have you used any MS products recently? windows 7, windows server 2008 R2, silverlight, .NET development platform, Microsoft Office 2010...all seriously awesome releases of the highest quality...

  • @chentiangemalc troll somewhere else. Silverlight sucks.

  • y are you commenting on a microsoft video? u obviously have some interest in this product...maybe you (olesto) should troll where else... o.O

  • it's totally awesome, try it, esp. developing for it.

  • @olesto

Dude you're the troll. Silverlight's awesome.

  • i second that, Silverlight is more secure and more interactive compared to flash...

  • Dont fully understand the appeal of these devices, its nothing I couldnt do with a tablet laptop. Which has more flexibility than these systems. But hey, someone will buy it

  • if it's got a 200gb+ harddrive and less that £700 then im getting it.

  • Being an Apple fan, by the looks of it, I would get this over the iPad any day. It looks practical and lot more sleeker than the iPad.

  • @bedrazor666

Except this is the same smokeware video they've been puting up over and over again for over a year now.

I myself am no Apple fan. The iPad looks impressive but I won't' buy anything from Apple ever because of their totalitarian mindset. Their insistence on controlling everything. So, I will never buy an apple crap.

Samsung actually is selling a 20" iPad like device here in Korea ALREADY IN STORES. It's too big to carry around. Hopefully they'll scale it down soon so I can buy 1

  • @manilaenglish I will never buy apple to just becuz the same reasons u said.

  • As an artist this is mind blowing! This is what I personally have been waiting for, for many many years. The things that people want to do has changed from simple pointing with a finger, Knowing that this has a pen tablet leaves no doubt in my mind I will be buying this day one! There are so many people who have been waiting for something like this. A digital sketchbook, and personal computer, that does the stuff the iphone does but with deeper functionality.

  • Some of the essential interface elements are hidden from the user to the extent that they won't be able to use the device unless they know obscure gestures. For instance, the gesture @1:35 - how can tapping the screen pull up top level navigation, rather than selecting an element on the screen?

  • Those of you predicting the iPad will fail, did you also predict the iPhone would be a huge success? Just trying to gauge the quality of your insights.

  • its obvious that the iphone is a revolutionary product - i don't have one but i'm definitely gonna get it. the ipad on the other hand is clearly an unoriginal, useless piece of crap that was probably rushed out to pre-empt tablet devices like courier and take some of their sales. i mean, come on. no matter how you spin it, at the end of the day it's still pretty much just an unconveniently large ipod touch.

  • That's like saying "the first comp was a revolutionary product. all these other comps are clearly unoriginal. i mean, come one. no matter how you spin it, at the end of the day they're pretty much inconveniently waay too small computers."

i disagree. technically, if you think about it: everything we "invent" and "discover" are really just the disclosure and mixing of already available material. it's something mccluhan would say, these are mere extensions of us

    solar panel? meet photosynthesis

  • yeah you might have had a point somewhere hidden in that waffling if the ipad was in any way a serious improvement. its pretty much just a large and grossly overpriced media viewing slate, and its size only improves its use as a video viewer while detracting from its desirability for just about every other task, especially as a music player. it is simply impractical.

  • haha *stupid word limit*

    but yeah... yea

totally waay overpriced... but window shopping is fun...going to the mac stores and checking out their new stuff is always a delight.. i gotta actually try it out before really saying how i feel about a product

  • all I am trying to say is, that whereas the iPhone may be a success now, if you look at the threads and reviews before its launch you will find tons of 'the iPhone = fail", "the iPhone will NEVER compete in the cellular industry". Its not that Apple is infallible, plenty of products have not been successful (Newton, G4 Cube), but right now, I think it is not a safe bet to predict doom for the iPad, People who hate Apple will hope it will fail but I suspect it will do just fine.

  • It's far to expensive, and doesn't really do anything special.

  • Its seem better thant the iPad BUT! Its only a mookup! so get over it...

  • itampon = fail

  • ipad is gon get its ass KICK

  • they should get this in schools

  • i'm a big apple fan for private things an i planned to by an ipad ... but ms courier just kicks ass.. way better than the big iphone called ipad... can't wait to get this stuff...

  • Microsoft may be doing something right this time. This seems more practical in real life than the iPad.

  • i want a real demo. common, these vids are old.

  • microsoft can do this stuff ... just watch the microsoft surface vids ... much better than everything apple created...

  • if this becomes a reality i will buy this in a heartbeat

  • in comparison of this the ipad is a Joke :D

ipad Rip (when the Courier comes out)

    i better buy a iphone!

  • the closed captions are soo funny! hahahaha

  • this is wat ipad was suppose to do, one of the best products i have seen, usability is endlesss

  • just like Natal, M$ can't even show actual human real time footage, just fake virtualware in action. What a joke. M$ users are so gullible and worthless. It's also i time machine, M$ said so so naturally i believe them.

  • stop sucking apple cock mate. relax.

  • @8aetroya8 they HAVE shown actual human footage for Natal. /watch?v=ie02k3eAvxY

  • it looks like bumptop

  • The closed captions are hilarious. Thanks, YouTube!

  • @JonaGN rofl i turned it on and i was rolling lmao

  • yeah, they don't really believe that work is done that way are they? it may be fun for private things though...

  • iPad killer? The iPad is already dead...

  • awesome

  • This looks much more useful and practical unlike that stupid oversized ipad

  • iPad killer XD

  • Is this a Microsoft product or one from the Megadodo Publishing Corporation? Looks just like the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy!

  • It must be more expensive than iPad

  • whoa this is awesome, gonna look for it when it's out. hope not to pricy, but will it be really easy to write on a touchscreen surface?

I mean in my experience on tablet pc's, it's really hard to write or draw my autograph like the normally I do

  • me want now

it looks so cool and useful unlike the ipad

  • This looks pretty spectacular and way way more exciting than MaxiPad. I'm pumped to see the final product. The biggest problem of the ipad is that it's too big and not portable enough. I like that this device is focused on mobility and seems much more useful than ipad.

However, I see some weaknesses to this device. Watching media like movies, tv shows, reading big magazines, books, playing games on this tiny device wouldn't be

  • maybe the game will be NDS-like-game. lol

  • NDS-like gaming would work, using the pen as a stylus. But it doesn't have accelerometers like the iphone or physical buttons of NDS. i can't see anyone holding the Courier for hours to play games. The book design could make it impractical for media usage like i said, for movies, tv, and surfing big webpages could be a pain.

The other weakness might be limited usability. Courier seems to be designed for graphic designing, scrapbooking and notetaking. That's very limited.

  • Also about the websurfing on the courier, I don't know how you can use just the stylus to write things on the browser. There has to be an onscreen keyboard to type on since obviously the Browser and websites won't accept handwriting as input. If you go to some website, how can you just use the stylus to handwrite URLs, passwords, etc..

Will the Courier have a fully capable browser that lets u do everything that a computer can? like go on Stickam and do a show with it?

  • @portalplayer That is handwriting recognition. It is by no means new technology, but seems like Microsoft has improved the recognition considerably.

  • i love this thing!!!

  • wayyyyy better than ipad

  • only if microsoft could make it that smooth and quick... its just not going to happen

  • it's gonna run on Nvidia Tegra, so it's gonna be smooth... ;)

  • you should see how Zune HD works before speculating things.

  • The audio transcribing makes this, or any video probably, just that much more awesome. Good thing Sunday Senator the graphic designer can get a headstart on a piece of cake.

  • fuck its march it will be summer soon
