I used to have an xl100 that looked almost exactly like this. It had the dial tuners and the tray thing for picture controls. The only difference was that it had a separate power switch (looked like a wedge) above the dials, and it had a cabinet that had legs. Would you happen to know what model this was?
hey! do you know how to replace a tube in an RCA XL-100? it looks like a 12 - 18 inch screen with a big knob recessed on the right side. I think it's the tube at least because i was playing zelda on it w/ a N64 and set it down. When i came back 20-30 minutes later, the screen glitched and got distorted. I know absolutely nothing about TV's. I am 15. Is there a solution to this or will the TV come out of it. It has sat for about 10+ years and it was in a cold garage. Please help.
We always had Zeniths.. God I miss those kind of TVs.. I sat in front of themon the floor all day and watched my favorite programs.. I personnally think these kind of TV s where and are still the best.. Thanks for sharing this !
My folks bought a Zenith 27" tabletop set in 1990 and it was fancy! Smoked glass and auto dim in bright rooms, computer access, TTY printer, weather access (where available) stereo sound, PIP, a ton of unbelievable features for 1990! It was over $1000 back then.....can anyone help me find the model number? Have looked and looked for one just for history. We have sucumbed to the LCD/Digital scam like the rest of the country! Thanks in advance! HELP!!! :)
My parents purchased a 1973 model XL-100 console in 12/1972. They still own it but it hasn't been used in about 12 years. It's housed in a Danish style cabinet, which was not a very common style for an early 70s tv. The channel indicator section is narrower than yours and it uses the rotary style pic adjust controls rather than the sliding type. It also has a lever style on/off switch instead of the more common pull out type. I hope to get it working again (along w/ my other vintage tvs).
I used to have a unit which was JUST like this one. When you use the remote control on this television, does it make the dial turn? That's how it was on the one I had. And if you put it into UHF mode, and held the channel changer down, it would make a sound which I found to be hilarious.
OMG! Brings back memories of a kid growing up in my old Bronx nabe... this TV (or similar) was a fixture in my early years... it was my baby sitter when mom would watch soaps in the other room... ;-0
Great news! For those of you have seen the RCA XL-100 console TV with an NES game "Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle", AVGN has a lot to say in this newest episode. It has all 4 games plus a fifth game that did not feature Bugs Bunny, it was Woody Woodpecker in his only game. Check it out!
Nice TV, but I hope all of the TV stations will go digital starting February 2009, that's going to be in the next two months. I've never played an NES game "Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle", there was also a version on the Game Boy called "Bugs Bunny" and it's got the same gameplay as with the NES version. To get back on this thing, you need a digital converter box to go with this old RCA CTC-48 XL-100 TV set and come 2009, it's good to go.
Wow, I've never seen someone put so much time and effort into something like this. Is this a hobby? Please don't be offended, I'm honestly wondering, what's the point? Is there something special about these old tvs?
Yes, but it's a pretty marginal hobby. Most people collect TVs from the 1950's; very few will touch sets from the sixties or seventies, probably because they share your sentiment that they're not interesting. I disagree, as they have a very neat retro styling and were designed very differently inside. If somebody doesn't collect the early 70's stuff, pretty soon it will be rarer than sets from the 1950's.
Nice TV! My parents had a similar 25" RCA from the early 70's. Their set had Rotary controls inside the tilting door, not sliders. The TV was not an XL-100; it was an "AccuColor Solid State".
My parents replaced it with a 27" Zenith, and they would not let me use the new TV with my NES. Thus, my dad put the RCA in my bedroom!
I always thought to myself... a Rabbit who can't jump? And Bugs was practically invincible in the cartoon... this game was truly the revenge of all the "cartoon bullies!"
Hey I have an RCA XL-100 but it doesn't look anything like that its newer but still old enough its got the UHF/VHF knobs and screws (no screw on coaxial)
I love old TVs there an old black and white GE tube based unit for sale at my local antique shop but they want $75 for it and I can't spend it on that! Still its nice got the pink and light blue plastic on it sooo 50's looking.
I disabled it because it keeps the filaments turned on constanly on the picture tube as long as it is plugged in (at a reduced voltage though). This feature tends to make the CRT weak just through having it powered constantly, and I don't mind waiting for it to warm up.
I saw a nintendo , just like that one at a flea market, but I did not buy it . I had to much in my hands , and would not have been able to take it home because we had such a small car at the time. Wish i have bought it ,believe it was 4$
And I have to say: Back when I first started collecting vintage TVs (Dec. 23, 1997) that is something I LOVED doing: Playing my NES/SNES/N64, etc. on them!!!
Once I move, I'll have to set them back up again on my TVs.
Good luck on your move...I hope you will have a good place to setup your TV's. I can remember when I moved from a 2nd floor apartment to my property and we had to move lots of TV's down the stairs and haul them in a minivan! Didn't even have the tommy lift truck or Dodge van then.

I would be worried about screen burn on that if you play games too long.

Sweet TV, and seeing that game brings back a ton of memories for me! I probably still have all the passwords written somewhere.
I just got my NES running last week, and I'll have to get a copy of this game again. I always loved crawling through the pipes too for some reason.

Any reason why you disabled the Instant On feature?
wb8976 3 years ago
I disabled it because it keeps the filaments turned on constanly on the picture tube as long as it is plugged in (at a reduced voltage though). This feature tends to make the CRT weak just through having it powered constantly, and I don't mind waiting for it to warm up.

This set doesn't take long at all to get a picture.
jefferyb304 3 years ago
I think the "instant on" was just a selling gimmick! TV tubes do warm-up that fast.
VideyoJunkei 3 years ago
Duuno about that. I used to have a Decca set from the late '60s/early '70s, and it took two minutes to warm up.
brentjohnpalmer 2 years ago
@retrochad Does it keep the filaments on for the other tubes like the horizontal?
I heard they last longer running than being on/off but for 37 years?
That would mean it was on since I was born........I can't see that being good.
Do you ever notice sometimes you try and baby something and it turns out not lasting as long as somebodies that didn't care?
Man I hate that,
