Nice to hear from you too Vogelbird. I went back to Zittau where I was a pow, with several members of my family, to celebrate my 90th birthday on 18th May. I now have very good friends there - and a certain amount of celebrity as I, quite accidentally and un-knowingly, played a minor role in the 550 year history of Zittau's great Lenten Veil or Fastentuch - an enormous textile artefact that is the town's pride and joy. I first heard this when I was a prisoner of war in an Arbeitskommando in Zittau in 1944. The tune, and most of the words, have stayed in my memory. We had a gramophone in the lager and we exchanged some jazz records with the Hitler Jugend! for some German records. This was one of them. I am now 90!

Not being a musician, I am not sure I can identify what there is about this song that makes it so appealing. Yet, I can say without doubt that I find it one of the most entrancing melodies of this period. It is one of those recordings that I listen to again and again without boredom.

In regard to my previous post, there is a instrumental chorus that kicks in about 2:00 minutes in that particularly fascinates me, first because of its beauty and secondly because I cannot identify the instrument. I assume it may be a zither, but if there is anyone who really knows, I hope you will post the information.

It sounds to me that it's either a zither or a guitar, perhaps one of the 'lap-slide' type, which later became better known as a Hawaiian guitar.

Du hast wieder ein super Video reingestellt. Bei diesen alten Liedern denke ich immer an die Zeit zurück, in der jeden Samstag am ORF 2 alte Filme gespielt wurden. Das war immer "Pflichtprogramm" meiner Oma und mir. Wenn man jemanden hat, der aus der Zeit so viel weiß (sehr oft zu den Filmen selbst), sind diese Lieder noch einmal so schön. Danke dir!!! G.
