I remember seeing a interesting picture of Nagasaki in my Nigal Henbest "The Exploding Universe"; you could see the boundaries of the blast from one side of the town to the other; clearly, whoever took the picture was standing on one edge of the town; it's kind of striking. Nuclear bombs simply are not 'that' big; an asteroid collision like in 1908 is far bigger; so are volcanic eruptions.

The point is that Von Braun was the man who more than any other helped the U.S. to catch up with then overtake the Russians in the space race. For this reason the West should be grateful to him.

von Braun became involved with the German government at a young age and well before it was apparent what the Nazi government was all about. By the time V-2 rockets were being built, he was well past the point of no return. To blame him for the way his technology was used is tantamount to blaming John Thompson because Tommy guns were used by mobsters in the 20s and 30s.
