i think silent hunter 4 is better than silent hunter 5.. i downloaded both (illegally) and i think silent hunter 5 has some really unnoing things..i only keep the game because of the awesome graphics..but when looking at gameplay i'd prefer 4

A few things I know:

SH5 has ubisoft's annoying DRM where you have to be constantly connected

SH4 does not have SH5's "easy mode" for beginners

SH5 is much prettier than SH4

I'm probably going with 4

Today when I played SH4 I fired 4 torpedoes against a Japanese Battleship. I scored 3 hits and one miss. The ship didn't sink, but its almost capsized,and the deck was under water. 2 propellers was damaged and rudder was jammed, so she couldn't drive or turn good enough, so I decided to finish her with a single torpedo which I had left. I aimed and launched the torpedo, I scored a direct hit. But a message appeared "Torpedo is a dud, sir!" and bounced off the ship! I was like WTF O_o

thats like the destroyers in sh3 the want to overrun you, but you dive and dive and dive and then,

a) he hits you with the dept charge bombs but he is too near and blow up himself too, or

b) he blows just you up, or

c) he missed and you fire a torpedo in his back.

HAHA I KNOW! Yesterday a destroyer suddenly appeared behind me when I was stalking a Light Cruiser. I didn't have time to dive, didn't even have time to crash dive. So I decided to stay on periscope depth and wait for the unavoidable collision and eventually my death! But boyaahh! I was suprised! The ram didn't kill me, I was only damaged and some minor flooding, instead, the crazy destroyer exploded and broke in two pieces and ultimately sank! :'D

Hehe, same thing happened to me, but in my case, my sub was the "other ship". :P

It was in heavy fog and I deck-gunned a munitions merchant, at point blank range. When the sensitive cargo exploded the ship broke in half and because I was so close, the explosion took my boat out too. A lesson I'll never forget. :P

lol this is just a mission I made with the editor to practice manual torps. I didn't use any damage mods, I filled every ship I could with fuel and ammo in their cargo holds so if they got hit they'd explode.

Hey, Cruise liners were perfectly legitimate targets during both wars, since nations (especially Britian) used them to sneak war supplies across naval blockades. Civilians onboard Cruise Liners knew the risk when they climbed on board during wartime. Nothing disturbing about it. It's war. Get over it.

Nothing sneaky about it. Most UK liners in ww2 were used as troop ships, even the Queen Mary. Some were even fitted with guns and turned into "auxilary cruisers".

The only liner no sub was supposed to torpedo was one painted white with red crosses (hospital ship).

In manual you plot in the torpedo math by your self. Angel to fire from sub, depth and torpedo speed.

In auto you just aim the scoop at the ship and fire. The AI does the rest.

But in Silent Hunter 3 you had to open the torpedo tubes manually for any of the calculations to work. Meaning if you used auto and didnt open the tubes manually you would miss because ether calculations didnt take into account the time it took to open the tubes and fire.

He's using a mod to increase the blast radius and power of a torpedo. Since tankers take at least 2 torpedos to sink and those european liners are much harder.

Notice you can see another ship even further away on fire at the end.
