All it means is that they need to become better educated on the topic.

I should also add that the Gospels were written in a time when people believed that frogs grew in mud puddles and birds flew to the moon during winter. The earth was proven round in a time when people believed sacrificing cattle to the gods invoked their favor. GRAVITY was discovered at a time when many believed that the planets were heavenly spheres, and that heaven was at the outer rim.
At any rate, believeing that frogs grow in a puddle of mud is as ignorant as denying evolution.

Darwin was not bigoted, he was against slavery in a time where white people thought they where doing black people a favour by enslaving them.
But as had already been noted earlier in the discussion... modern biology has come very very very far since Darwin. In fact Genetics, which wasn't around in Darwin's time, proves evolution by itself. No fossils required! But of course we have TONS of fossils, more then we'd ever think we'd have.

I love how at the beginning of this thing Mr. Simmons tries to separate himself from the religious connection to Intelligent Design. Then he tries to inject Intelligent Design to explain things that are gaps in the evolutionary theory. The classic "God of the gaps" argument. Big FAIL Mr. Simmons. First off, just because someone lived in an era of ignorance, does not mean that the basic tenants of a theory should instantly be disregarded. Second, the same goes for the personal views of the scientist, let's face it Newton was much more chauvinistic than Darwin, but we don't say gravity is just a theory because of that, and finally, read "Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle between the years 1826 and 1836." to find out his real view on race.

Therefore, what Darwin thought isn't really relevant anymore (nor is who Darwin was as a person)... and if the general public is still adhering to Darwin's original theories, that too is irrelevant, because their opinion on the subject really doesn't matter. All it means is that they need to become better educated on the topic.

When they see a bad side to Darwin's personality they see this as a chink in the armour of "Darwinism". When they see some of his ideas were wrong they think they have gained a victory somehow.
Fortunately, science is about ideas, not people. Sure, we're grateful of some of the people that had such great ideas that were ahead of their times but we don't revere them.
