The connectors are so faint you can hardly see them. Probably because they aren't there. They never knew the laughing stock Atari and the Jaguar would be today.
@modewr Jaguar is really 32 bit... but it isn't ALL about the bus-size (how many bits), the bits may be a fundamental limitation (8 bit consoles are fundamentally limited) but just because one limit is removed doesn't mean the full capability is there.
Jaguar just wasn't that capable, it used older tech than 32-bit consoles like PS1. Bit-size is not very relevant any more, there are so many varying factors it's best to judge consoles by their ACTUAL games, not theoretical performance.
@Treblaine I read in a old retrogamer mag that that Jag was originally a upgraded konix / fair child console which was stillborn UK console. Atari bought the tech and voila
@damieandark After seeing a vid just then displaying 50 Jag games, I spotted a fair few good titles, however most of these better titles were games that already existed on other platforms, such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Zoop, Bubsy, Cannon Fodder, Theme Park, Worms etc. They were smooth though.
That was a pretty cool show, but they were wrong about Pong being the first arcade game the first arcade game was Computer Space and it was made by Nolan Bushnell who they were talking about so they really should have known that.

heres a few things they could have done to save there company
1. change there name from atari to somthing else the 'atari' name was tarnished
2. they shouldnt have lied and said it was a 64 bit machine even if it was a 32 bit machine its still twice as powerful as the sega genesis whom was dominating at the time
3. never should have made the cd attatchment it used to much resources
4. had really good launch games.
5.redesign the controller to make it more compact and durable.
Wow, we all clearly have too much spare time, besides its the games that make the console and the jaguar, now withstanding, had none of any memorable value, hence failure. That said I did enjoy alien trilogy, for a couple of minutes.
@stewroo It's clear that you never played a Jaguar at all. There never even was a game called "alien trilogy" for the Jaguar. There was a game caled Alien vs Predator for the Jag that was an amazing game when released. Of the 60 or so games that came out for the Jaguar many of them are not any good but the system has some amazing games that are still fun to play. If you ever get a chance to play Battlesphere or Skyhammer you might change your mind about the system.
cybermorph has realy awesome shooting sounds in this video... the actual game had atari 2600 sound effects.. boy did atari drop the bomb with this pile of pooh!
Now for anyone with real knowledge, bits mean little. The Jaguar's biggest downfall is not its bit width which is 64 bits. It is the fact that 5 processors are trying to use the same unified 64 bit bus ans same unified 64 bit memory. Tom and Jerry are monster precessing chips. The problem with the Jaguar is the system design, not the silicon.
Get over it Nintendo fan boy....which BTW the N64 is a 64 bit processor ona 32 bit system bus. So how much less is your garbage machine based on your flawed logic? Piss poor i'd say.
StoneyTheRaster, you are clueless. The OPL and Blitter are 64 bit processors connected to a 64 bit bus system. The Two Riscs are 32 bits internal and is all they need to be. They could have very well been 8 bits internal and still have the system be 64 bits. THe GPU, though a 32 bit risc internallly is capable of reading and writng 64 bits in one bus access.
The Jaguar is truly a 64 bit bus with 3 64 bit procesors. Any moron that thinks its two 32 bit processors is a parrot repeating the ignorance of the game mags morons who's daddy bought them a magazine company and have not one bit of technical understanding whatsoever.
Jaguar has 5 processors. 3 of them are 64 bit processors on one chip, the other is a 64 bit on another chip. They communicate an external 32 bit address bus. The Atari 2600 had an 8 bit processor, but did not use a full 8 bit address bus. Numerous consoles state they are so many bits, but limit the address bus to save cost. As for the Jag, 4 of its 5 processors can process 64 bits of information at a time. I say its 64 bit.
Actually there are working prototypes of the Jaguar VR headset.
It was never released because Virtuality - the company that were making it (and THE company for VR stuff worldwide) couldn't make the headset cheap enough to be a viable release.
It's a joke dude. In all seriousness it's dishonest to claim any computer is 64 bit unless it has a 64 bit CPU. Take a look at how 64 bit computers are just now becoming common place. The reality of the Jaguar's 32 bit CPU combined with it's 32 bit graphics system was that it was just too hard to program for. No game ever fully took advantage of the Jaguar's hardware.
Most Jag games looked like Genesis or SNES games at best. There were a few which were impressive (AvP, Tempest) but the only game to really show what the Jaguar could do was Skyhammer - a game released 6 years after the Jaguar's death. :-)
And before you go reiterating to me what the TV presenters in the above video have said, just remember that they don't really know what they're talking about :-)
I'm not bandwagon-jumping. It's a 32 bit machine. Just because it has two 64 bit cpus does not automatically make it a 64 bit machine. They are two 32 bit cpus therefore they can access up to 4 billion memory addresses, or 4GB of RAM. The Jaguar is an example of parellel processing where it is getting two cpus to do two or more simultaneous tasks but that does not mean any one cpu is faster than another. I suggest you read up on cpu architecture.
The console failed due to piss-poor marketing and advertisement, and an over complicated architecture which made writing code for it a real bitch.
The debate of whether or not it is 64 bit has raged on for years, and no one is going to win because no one can can be absolutely sure.
I realise it's cool to bash the Jaguar, but let's not forget that it was host to Tempest 2000 and the Rebellion's original Alien vs Predator. 2 of the very best games ever.
You speak the truth about Tempest and AVP, those two games were very good. I actually love Tempest 200, and that game is the only reason I hunted for a Jaguar on Ebay. The rest of the Jag games I got on the package... sigh... they suck so hard.
Atari Jaguar lol how we look back at that review and laugh. If I conect 4 snes together does that make it 64 bit? The games even when that review was made looked no better than a mega drive shooter or star fox for the snes.
of course, i'd never heard anyone refer to it as a "sness," either the lady has no idea what shes talking about, OR she knows exactly what shes talking about. i'm scared.
i have such fond memories of being 14..donkey kong country on the SNES, killer instinct at the arcades..I remember waiting for the ultra 64, i saved for a whole year to buy it
Sega and Atari learned the hard not to make shit consoles, the dreamcast was a brillant console but they'd made so many duds by then noone took it seriously!
It was just a case of the company's thinking whoever released their console's first would become the biggest that and greed! Also programing languages are more sophisticated now programer's would've found it hard going trying to create 64 bit graphics created with the C++language! It would have taken them quite a while!
"The CD add on should come next year"... Jaguar from way of the begening should have build in CD-Drive.... 5mb carts were just huge mistakes... And still Jaguar have only 32 bit prossesor... so it isn't the first true 64bit system
Yes. Look at it. I've seen vids of a few games that appeared on both the Jaguar and the Playstation. Without exception, the Jaguar versions look as good or better than the Playstation versions.
Take a good look at Rayman for the Jaguar. Unquestionably more impressive than the Playstation version.
It seems to me that the Jaguar was much more well suited to 2D than the PS1, which was mostly focusing on polygons, so it definitely had that going for it. People always talk about how the Jaguar had worse graphics than the Playstation, but quite frankly, the Playstation had some really crappy looking games as well (Metal Gear Solid's brilliant, but it still looks like a bunch of Legos.)
Do you know it was mainly based on the game part of the failed Atari Falcon! A old ST processor was placed in it to run the system leaving the 64 bit part to run the game, but programmers couldn't be arsed even using the 64 bit(falcon part) and just used the ST chip to rush games out thats why it doe'sn't look like it's 64 bit because it isn't! It's not even 16 bit really! more like 12 as the other bits ran the sound!
Unfortunately, the Atari Corporation relied on hardware claims like this to sell their system. They sold it on the potential to have great games instead of _having_ great games at launch, which is what Nintendo did with the NES. Atari sold the Jaguar like a computer instead of a video game system, and as a result, the system went nowhere.
They are 32 bit at best... It's like an n64 but 32 bits less and no video like the PS1. It was a real piece of shit spare SOME games like raiden and tempest 2000. That's really it though.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This video proves that the Jaguar wasn´t a 64-bit console, since it could only produce 32-bit graphics and 32-bit sound. If the Jaguar was 64-bit, then the NES would have been 16-bit, and Megadrive 32-bit.
oh and the guy was mistaken about the 2 32 bit processors. It actually had a 64bit, a couple 32bit ones, and a 16bit processor. I'm sure if I wiki it I'd be correct.
You must have completely missed everything he said. the graphics processor (the bit that most people use to judge the power of the console) is ONLY 32-Bit and the other 32 bits are in the sound processor. Looking at footage of Jag games it easily equals other 32-Bit games like those on the Sega 32X or Super FX chipped SNES games (which were technically 32 Bit)
the cd drive did make it on to the market it was a add on that you put in to the cartridge bay of the jaguar sadly there was only 14 games made for the cd add on for the jaguar.
Yeah, I noticed my error even before the new AVGN episode came out... But it's really weird, especially since they seem to have planned it all the way, it propably should have been part of the system instead of an addon - but I guess they wanted to make money.
I'm afraid that snake is right. The chips were so hard to program that alot of textures, sounds & other elements were left out of many games such a Checkered Lag coz they got fed up! But a few did get done & they were the few games that shined. Tempest 2000 has now became a cult! Me & wes are fans! I miss the Jag in a way! Querky old Jag!

64 bits means you had to build it your self..it came with 64 bits to build it..

i have such fond memories of being 14..donkey kong country on the SNES, killer instinct at the arcades..I remember waiting for the ultra 64, i saved for a whole year to buy it

You can see why this machine tanked. The games look terrible, much worse than what the SNES and Megadrive were doing at the time.

'Two 32 bit processors'
So it's not 64 bit then!

Lies!
It's a flipping 32 bit console! They said it theirself in their biased little voices.
Virtua Racing must have been awful! I love that game, but with a controller like a mobile phone I doubt it would be any good.

Sega and Atari learned the hard not to make shit consoles, the dreamcast was a brillant console but they'd made so many duds by then noone took it seriously!
hididdlyho82 2 years ago
@hididdlyho82 i am suprised that SEGA didnt take Atari as a example as what would happen to them if they dont get their act together.
sonikku956 2 years ago
It was just a case of the company's thinking whoever released their console's first would become the biggest that and greed! Also programing languages are more sophisticated now programer's would've found it hard going trying to create 64 bit graphics created with the C++language! It would have taken them quite a while!

dreamcast had so much potential.. sigh

"The CD add on should come next year"... Jaguar from way of the begening should have build in CD-Drive.... 5mb carts were just huge mistakes... And still Jaguar have only 32 bit prossesor... so it isn't the first true 64bit system
Grimraziel 2 years ago
Yes. Look at it. I've seen vids of a few games that appeared on both the Jaguar and the Playstation. Without exception, the Jaguar versions look as good or better than the Playstation versions.
Take a good look at Rayman for the Jaguar. Unquestionably more impressive than the Playstation version.
AssociationAdmirer 2 years ago 2
@AssociationAdmirer
It seems to me that the Jaguar was much more well suited to 2D than the PS1, which was mostly focusing on polygons, so it definitely had that going for it. People always talk about how the Jaguar had worse graphics than the Playstation, but quite frankly, the Playstation had some really crappy looking games as well (Metal Gear Solid's brilliant, but it still looks like a bunch of Legos.)
akumacornflakes 2 years ago 6

This video proves that the Jaguar wasn´t a 64-bit console, since it could only produce 32-bit graphics and 32-bit sound. If the Jaguar was 64-bit, then the NES would have been 16-bit, and Megadrive 32-bit.
megaverner 2 years ago
Nope, bits have nothing to do with CPU speed. Jag was slow cause it had only 20mhz cpu. N64 is way faster cause it has a 95mhz CPU.
Atari 2600 and NES were both 8-bit. NES just had faster CPU. It's a scientific fact jag could process 64bit instructions. Just really slowly ; )
dorkforceti83 2 years ago 6
oh and the guy was mistaken about the 2 32 bit processors. It actually had a 64bit, a couple 32bit ones, and a 16bit processor. I'm sure if I wiki it I'd be correct.
dorkforceti83 2 years ago
You must have completely missed everything he said. the graphics processor (the bit that most people use to judge the power of the console) is ONLY 32-Bit and the other 32 bits are in the sound processor. Looking at footage of Jag games it easily equals other 32-Bit games like those on the Sega 32X or Super FX chipped SNES games (which were technically 32 Bit)

LOL ^^ those never saw the light of day.

the cd drive did make it on to the market it was a add on that you put in to the cartridge bay of the jaguar sadly there was only 14 games made for the cd add on for the jaguar.

The CD addon saw the light of day.
Enzo012 2 years ago
Yeah, I noticed my error even before the new AVGN episode came out... But it's really weird, especially since they seem to have planned it all the way, it propably should have been part of the system instead of an addon - but I guess they wanted to make money.

Yes, I know. As you can see I already wrote that it was my mistake.

the jag wasnt really 64bit, it was a complicated "sort of" variant of a 32 bit machine.
It was 64 bit technically in certain programming comditions. But saddly a let down for the suckers that fell for it.
also the programmers couldnt use the '64bit ness" it was so contrived
strunway 2 years ago
I'm afraid that snake is right. The chips were so hard to program that alot of textures, sounds & other elements were left out of many games such a Checkered Lag coz they got fed up! But a few did get done & they were the few games that shined. Tempest 2000 has now became a cult! Me & wes are fans! I miss the Jag in a way! Querky old Jag!
therealKINDLE 2 years ago 4
The problem with the Jag is that the chips were incomplete and thus prone to crashing.
You think developers complain about PS3's being hard to program for, the Jag is a nightmare.
The are serious bugs in the chips, which is what helped it die a early death because the developers didn't want to hassle with it.
