I don't think I've thanked you for this recipe, it was a hit with my family (and some neighbors who "happened" to get a whiff of it). The only thing I wasn't able to do was puree the soup as our blender have already "retired", although I do prefer a chunky soup, and it tasted great anyway. So thank you Chef John! :-)
@Faust013 there are several types of cream you moron, you wold know that if you could cook....and for your information he used a cup of HEAVY crem sunshine ;)
thanks chef john, i watched ur video last night and you informed me that mushrooms get energy from the sun, and on my science test... BAM.... u saved my life
Only food we eat that doesn't get its energy from the sun? I donno about you, but I eat chickens and those things as well as mushrooms, are heterotrophic and they get their energy from metabolizing organic material, not from photosynthesis or this 'moonosynthesis' you speak of.
@whyice933 Do you move the mushrooms around when you are sauteing them? Lave them alone on the pan and let them get to a golden brown color. If you saute them and stir them constantly they will turn a grey color. Trust me it helps.
Awesome! I love it every time I learn something new from you. The blender idea and mushrooms getting they're energy from the moon. Great work! Keep it up! I depend on your recipe's to keep my taste buds happy...
I'm sure people have said this time and time again, but I say it to emphasize it's importance: mushrooms do NOT get energy from the moon.
Fungi are the closest related to us kingdom- wise and they are detritus feeders. So any rotting biological compounds such as leaves, wood, etc. Which is considerably grosser and slightly cooler than moon energy.
Mushrooms dont get anything from the moon, they get it from decomposing dead biological matter... which isnt a big worry as thats how any meat would get its energy... but where the hell did this moon Idea come from?
A bit pointless watching a cooking video if you used " chicken stock". Was hoping for something from scratch. Good technique on starting the mushrooms but pointless after that.
@cheskydivision There are plenty of videos where he uses his own chicken stock. But seriously what is he supposed to do if he just doesn't have chicken stock on hand? Boil a whole chicken carcass for hours just for a bowl of mushroom soup? If he doesn't have it on hand, give him a break.
@wakemusicalarm I ment I should not have to use stock at all or go to buy some. If you are making soup then you make soup. I was hoping to make the soup from scratch. Still there are a lot of good tips in this video.
I just made this for my green bean casserole. SO AWESOMELY GOOD. I never actually tried it before because the canned shit always looked so gross to me. So glad it's this easy; everyone should try to make this at least once and taste the difference. Thanks!
Great recipe. Mushrooms DO NOT get their energy from the moon. As fungi, the do not undergo photosynthesis, however any light provided by the moon is reflected sunlight. They get their energy from decaying matter. Finally, exposing mushrooms to ultraviolet light (sunlight) causes them to produce Vitamin D2. Still, an awesome recipe...
@TheTumboos and you know this...how? I made this soup today, and for whatever it's worth, it was not funny (smile). It's an awesome soup - although I used a stick blender instead of a tabletop blender.
how much butter should i put ? at the beginning part. Also, it looks like you add broth to it at the beginning? or it is just butter and the mushroom produces the watery part?
Thanks, i'm making this for dinner. I live in Denmark and we have a huge selection of mushroom from the nature. And they offer high-quality protein, vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids and fiber. Some even get you tripping :D
@carmenleeka could make it too tight, and with hot liquid inside the blender u don't want that ... soup all over urself or the kitchen for that matter... won't be pretty :)
@ajanixa in that case, i think its just my blender, it has like a lose cover on top of the cover which allows air out, but liquid wont get splashed out
Man, my uncle originally told me that mushrooms got their energy from oxygen that they absorb through the gills on the undersides of their caps. Good thing you set the record strait. Thanks chef John!!
Nice recipe, but I would chop up a load of mushrooms and lightly fry them in butter or olive oil and then disperse them throughout the soup, rather than just a few on top.
You seriously scared me there chef john... I jumped like ½ a meter into the air and knocked over my cup of water and my cigarette tray on my desktop, seriously that was cruel! :p
@iHaveOneArm He didnt say that chicken stock would ruin it, he said if you try to thin it out with the cream it would be ruined because it would be too much moisture. He said you can thin it out WITH chicken stock or broth or veggie stock

@nikolajavorina - Hello. I am sorry for the rudeness of my fellow Americans.
Крем он користи је "све намене" типа. У Америци, то се зове "пола-пола" (пола млеко, пола милерам). Ми користимо ове врсте у нашој кафе.
(The cream he uses is an "all-purpose" type. In America, it is called "Half and half" [half milk, half heavy cream]. We use this type in our coffee.)
