If it's true that none of the Buddhas students ever thought to ask what was the mechanism for the stream of consciousness going from one physical body to the next, then they must have been extremely foolish people.
The majority of Buddhists do in fact believe that something travels from one physical body to the next - a "stream of consciousness" that is *independent* of the physical body and separate from other streams of consciousness. This is no different whatsoever to a "self" that goes from one body to the next - and it is a total fantasy.
