  • Thanks, reminds me of television on Sunday nights while visiting my grandparents (who have now passed on). Always liked to hear those percussionists tearing it up.

  • CBS would be smart to bring this back. I wished last night as my son and I watched "Frosty" last night that I'd see this.

  • Six idiots just have no clue

  • This 5-second intro brings back a great memories for those of us who watched a lot of TV in the 1960s & 70s--it meant that regular progrmming was preempted and something special (and it was called a "special") was coming on and you couldn't wait! Chances are you already knew from the TV Guide--which was practically required reading for a TV junkie--what the program was. This was especially true in December with all those wonderful specials that we saw only once a year.

  • Loved by Everyone except six

  • Always something good was coming on if you saw this bumper!

I remember seeing this before Rikki Tikki Tavi and Charlie Brown!

  • Memories... I was so young... What went wrong... Regrets... Many good times... All of that from 7 seconds.

  • My sister and I would cluster around the TV expectantly when those congas started playing...

  • The Same intro was Used in Homestar Runner's The Best Decemberween Ever.

  • Now THIS is what I call a TRUE SPECIAL Logo

    A CBS SPECIAL PRESENTATION

    I LOVE IT

I use to watch this on alot of specials including Charlie Brown, Dr. Seuss Specials as well as Rankin-Bass Specials and even Miss USA, Miss Universe and Miss Teen USA Pageants

and it's MUCH better than some of those stupid shows that we got on today

God Bless CBS for coming up with this and also, this was even out when The Joker's Wild was on CBS and even when CBS was STILL rollin' strong day and night

  • From Muppet Babies on DVD

  • This used to come on before Charlie Brown and the Grammys. Michael Jackson!

  • being im 42 this is all to familiar, im seeing alot of charlie brown comments, but besides all the holliday specials, dont forget the garfield specials. :)

  • "WE'RE IN FOR SOME SHIT, OH YEAH!"-Kevin Smith

  • This message on the tv TOTALLY made my night when I was a kid. I don't remember them wasting it on stupid "grown up shows". It was always the great cartoons!

  • Damn, I feel old now.. :)

  • They showed this in the 80's as well, and it usually meant a Peanuts special. Great memories!!!!

  • Even in this age of DVDs and DVRs and all of that, you still can't beat that feeling of a watching a Christmas special or any event on television. I see in comments that most of you older people(no offense) feel the same way, although I am only 13 and am supposed to grow up with this generation, I really with I had grown up in the 70's. That is why I am on YouTube, to experience the childhood I missed. I think that some of the greatest art and music and films in the history of the world came

  • @Childist2 (comment below continued) ...during the 60s and 70s. Kids these days just don't know these feelings.

  • @Childist2 You know what, I have to agree.

  • @Childist2 You have good taste. But make the best of the time and place in which you were born."The grass is not greener on the other side;the grass is greenest where it's watered."

  • Garfield Christmas. Or the California Raisin's Christmas. My, my, I miss being a kid!

  • That ident usually only meant one of two things: "Charlie Brown" or "The Wizard of Oz." And magically, I'm 12 again.

  • I heard that, it was like yesterday. Where have 37 years gone?

  • When I was a kid, I used to love seeing this logo, 'cause then I knew that something good would be coming on. (And yeah -- as other commenters have stated, it was usually a Charlie Brown special!)

  • yes indeed on the charlie brown comments

  • @MrCHITOWN247: Ditto!

  • Charlie Brown is geting ready to come on!

  • Charlie Brown is getting ready to come on!

  • Maybe having everything you want exactly when you want it isn't really a good thing? How can Anything be special if you can get it on your phone while riding a bus? A kid once told me that he wished he could go back tothe '70s because things were so much cooler then. I reminded him that part of that coolness came from 3 TV channels, no videogames, and waiting in line at the bank. It was the "wanting", not the having, that made it special.

  • Where's Vince Guaraldi when you need him??

  • Why do I suddenly have the urge to eat a Dolly Madison snack cake?

  • Run into the living room to watch the old B/W television. something good is coming on.

Remember when we had to wait and entire year to see a special like Charlie Brown or The Wizard of OZ? Thanks to cable they have ruined many great shows and movies by playing the same ones over and over for months completly burning them out, until you are sick of them. When this logo ran, you knew something special and big was about to come on. good times.

  • Wow, I haven't felt seven, since I was, like, seven...until now.

  • This logo seems ahead of its time for 1973.

  • The boob tube had a serious impact on our young minds, didn't it. : )

  • @nostalgiajunkie70

Well, it's not like we got more TV than people do today, kids or adults. The difference is that TV made a deeper impression on us because of how much more special it was, and by special I mean it was more stylized and in smaller portions. Today kids are not getting what we got then. We had 3 channels, no recording devices, if you missed it, tough. Now they have 263 channels. There is no way they're getting a memorable imprint like we did then. They'll have no like memories.

  • @TheJediCharles Very well said.

  • @TheJediCharles ABSOLUTELY. Now kids have DVR's, even VCR's for that matter - old as they are, they gave an option. Like you said, if we missed it. tough. Now they have Nicktoons, Cartoon Network (that ironically shows mostly live action shows), Boomerang, ToonDisney. For us, Cartoons at night was such a treat - and the cartoons we got had lessons: "The Point" Puff the Magic Dragon, and any of the Charlie Brown specials were all artistically done. It was a really precious time.

  • @TheJediCharles I agree wholeheartedly.

  • @TheJediCharles, I just wanted to say that I totally agree. The way I posted my comment may have been misunderstood. When I posted, I was just amazed at how many people of my generation were thinking the exact way I was thinking. It was a very different time for us. Saturday morning cartoons, specials we only got to see once a year etc. We didn't have the world at our fingertips then. My dad said he did own a VCR by the mid 70s but I dont remember using it until a few years later.

  • @nostalgiajunkie70

    Yes. Right on!

Oh, and it's okay, I understood it, you stated it good.

I don't doubt that you didn't record much on your VCR until later... those tapes were not cheap, at first.

    Later, fellow lover of nostalgia.

  • This revved up the adrenaline and antipation we already felt preceeding a classic holiday special. CBS absolutely deserved it's "Tiffany Network" status back then.

  • That is a hardcore nostalgia image right there. It is a major staple of my childhood. Every time I saw it, I was really excited that something great that I had been anticipating for a while was about to start.

  • Just the comments here tell me how old we all are. Gotta love this!!!!!

  • When you saw this as a kid, you knew something great was about to happen!

  • Watching this brought back all the excitement my brother and I felt as kids! I think what made this so special is the wait. Kids before the 80's didn't have instant gratification with internet, DVD's or VHS. We had live television - that was it! We had to wait for the programming guide to come out, then to wait all month for that special night. Then, when we had popcorn in our bowls and heard those drums and horns, we KNEW it was ON! Charlie Brown was here at last! The wait was over!

  • when they said "special" back then it actually meant something.

  • @hoover321f yes it did

  • Cue "Christmas Time Is Here" and the Peanuts gang ice skating.

  • They ran this thing forever... heh. From early-70's to about 1991? Wish they'd bring it back.

  • Yep to me it always meant Charlie Brown.

  • I absolutely LOVED seeing this at Christmas time! :)

  • Amazing how a 5 second piece of music can stir such emotions and memories. Including mine!!!!

    Thanks for this!!

  • Man, when this played, you just knew that special "was on"!!!! Great times. Always ran before A Charlie Brown Christmas.

  • @flipwiggins yes. up until about 1984

  • @flipwiggins absolutely!!!!

  • @flipwiggins LOL!! ME TOO!!!!

  • "Sponsored by Dolly Madison"

  • I love this!! It sounds sort of jazzy and 60s.

  • Does anyone have the current logo? Frosty aired on CBS earlier tonight & I missed it.

  • I remember one year when I was a kid, around Christmas, they had a marathon run of 4 cartoon specials in a row. Every time a show would end, I'd think, "Well, that must be it." The the drums and rainbows would start again! It's crazy how a few seconds of sound/image can bring back so many memories.

  • damn this brings back memories from childhood...being up "late" watching charlie brown like it was the first time i'd seen it.

  • Thanks you for posting this. It's my all time favorite.

It really did let us know that something truly "special" was about to come on, usually a Peanuts cartoon.

  • I ALWAYS associated this bumper with Charlie Brown cartoons, when I was a kid. Every time I saw it, I would think...."Yay! Charlie Brown's on!" But one year, it turned out to be T'was The Night Before Christmas. I was SO bummed. lol

  • I know what you mean precisely. One time it was "Rikki Tikki Tavi." Blecch!

  • Vitoduval is correct. The music to this beloved logo is "Call to Danger" from the Hawaii Five-O soundtrack, composed by Morton Stevens. I wonder if Mr. Stevens had any idea how much he affected a generation!

  • I remember this! Last time I saw this I was in grade school!

  • This bumper always preceded all of the holiday / seasonal programing like the "Charlie Brown" cartoons, "Frosty the Snowman", and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" etc.,etc.

  • It always used to get my hopes up when it would turn out to be a political debate and not one of those specials.

  • Yes, just hearing that makes me still get a feeling of childlike exuberance and anticipation!

  • I remember seeing this in the '70's. It certainly has a "Hawaii 5-O" sort of musical vibe to it. It is astounding how these network IDs and color bumps will bring back memories of a childhood in front of the box. The NBC "Larime" Color intro can bring out a tear in memory of the past.

  • It was from the Hawaii Five O soundtrack-

    "Call to Danger"

  • well the video isn't from 1973, there wasn't any closed captioning then, but they used that logo for years.

  • are you sure this was from 1973? the same one was also done in 1982. I seem to have the full song...

  • I'm pretty sure CBS used this same bumper from the early '70s well into the 80s.

  • A lot of people seem to be more familiar with THIS clip than anything but the NBC Peacock. It was brilliant, and for the peeriod of time it was used, amazing in that it lasts a scant few seconds and the memory persists nearly 40 years later.

  • hehehehe how true.job well done. i kinda wish the networx wud GO retro on occasion just to remind evrybody that TV was suppose to unite the family, be informative responsable and yet entertain....hehe or is it just ME?

  • ALWAYS LOVED THAT SPOT

  • The blu-ray of "The Deep" has this opening in HD on the extras "The Making of The Deep" special feature.

    Go Get it!

  • i remember this would come on before a charlie brown special

  • YEEAAAHHHH IT DIIID DINT IT! gr8 stuff huh? hehehe.how cool.

  • I vividly remember this followed by The Mysterious Monsters watch?v=352cRcXSWdo. Scared the shit out of me for years. Just hearing this into on TV would scare me.

  • JPS466....Same here! :D

  • I remember the crazy drums!!

  • The memories... sniffle.

  • Me at 7 years old... I was always excited when I saw this because I knew the next thing I would see was Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

  • Holy crap...me too! I should've figured I wasn't the only one. ;)

  • Either that or a Fat Albert special during Thanksgiving or Christmas.

  • You too? Hehehe....

I don't think I've seen this bumper since Jimmy Carter was in office; the second I recognized it, for no other reason whatsoever, I immediately thought "Charlie Brown Christmas..."

The mind is a funny thing indeed.

  • That sound means to me Charlie Brown, a Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck special, something Disney, or Dr. Seuss.

  • Same here! LOL I was born in 1977, and they used that logo until the mid-1980s, I think.

  • Re: "...because I knew the next thing I would see was Charlie Brown and Snoopy."

But sometimes it wasn't. Sometimes it was some news special or awards show. :(

  • what's bigger than a jigger says tigger with a trigger on a rigger with a snigger to a libber with a chigger in a digger?

  • Is that truly the original key? Stevethemeave45 has a video with effects on this indent and I'm not sure.

  • There used to be a video on here ("the Vinyl Vault" or something) that played the Hawaii Five-O song "Call to Danger," also by Morton Stevens, on which this music was based.

Does anyone know what happened to it? I loved it.

Basically, it was a longer version of the "CBS Special Presentation" music.

  • They should use this sequence again to surprise some of today's viewers who have seen in back in the days. This seems to add more color and excitement to the audience before watching the specials about to come on. I recall the California Raisins this way =:-)

  • Miss Universe Pageant always began with the CBS Special Presentation Ident...

  • Taken from "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

  • this was used on the Homestar Runner cartoon A Holiday Greeting. except on the DVD

  • Oh yeah, this made me think of all those fun Christmas cartoons you'd get to watch every year!

  • I remember when Animaniacs spoofed this. Is that anywhere on YouTube?

  • Ah, memories...now bring on the Charlie Brown special!

  • very jungle!!

  • Wasn't there one before this that had a little graphic of a family?

  • There was another one that had a family drawn inside a little house that was used before some specials. Instead of it saying Special Presentation it had a CBS Family Presentation. Someone did have that one posted but it's now taken down.

  • I remember this before "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and seeing this graphic made it all the more special. That and the York Peppermint Patty and Almond Joy ads in between!

  • I remember this from the 70's and I dont know how long it was used before they changed it. But the should bring it back, or it should be used on TVLand or RTN..

Be nice to see on actual TV sometime

  • 1973-1990

  • That explains the closed captioning logo.

  • It says 'CC" on the bottom right hand corner so it must have been recorded after the 70's.

  • for some reason this use 2 scare me 2 death when i was a little kid in the early 80's lol!!! had 2 conquer my fears and watch it again hahaha

  • What about the screen gems S from hell? That scared me and alot of others.

  • What the hell? Didnt h*r copy this?

  • is on teh luau XD

  • Hey CBS. Bring this back. You won't get any complaints I can tell you that.

  • Amen. I remember that being played before major sporting events, or before events like the academy awards. It would be cool if they did bring it back.

  • Elvis in Concert October 1977...

  • Wow, I love this. I remember seeing this right before a Charlie Brown Christmas

  • Yeah.. this was as big a part of Charlie Brown specials as Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and Dolly Madison products.

  • yes! i wasnt around in 73, so i guess it was used throughout the 70s...

all i knew is that this promo meant the good times were a comin.

  • You said it!

  • I'm surprised the bongo and tympani parts haven't been sampled into an electronica or hip hop song yet. Probably has but I haven't heard it since it's not my chosen genre of music. It's catchy as hell.

  • Two words: Primal Scream.

  • Wow, this brings back memories. I'd start bouncing of the walls when this would come on - YES, time for Charlie Brown!

  • Makes good start-up music for Windows :-)

  • I'd love it if CBS started using this again. It's from the old days when CBS was #1.

  • CBS is still the #1 in primetime ratings.

  • Your being brainwashed by left wing lunatics.

  • Learn how to spell "you're," dummy.

  • When I saw this as a kid, it meant something good was coming on (well, most of the time anyways). I can still hear the sounds of Vince Guaraldi's classic Charlie Brown theme starting right after it. Makes you crave those Dolly Madison treats, doesn't it? Man, I miss those old days!

  • Holy Crap! I was going to leave the exact same comment! thanks for saying it first! Everytime I tell people about the Dolly Madison sponsorship of those old Charlie Brown specials, they look at me like I have worms crawling out of my eyes! I was begining to think I was schizo! Thank you again!

  • i hear you.

some of my friends that are 21 look at me like "wth?"

makes me feel that much older.

  • You're not schizo, you're just getting old like the rest of us.

  • Thanks alot, guys! I'm on a diet, and now you're making me hungry for Dolly Madison! (great comments, though.)

  • I just woke up, so I'm hungry.

  • Why is this -1?

  • Now it's +1 =)

  • Nope Sorry! He's back at -1 again because his comment was dumb just like him!

  • There was another ident for CBS special presentations aimed at families that was used in the early 70s as well. This video was for the regular type specials. After a while, they used only this one for all specials. The other one had the letters morph into a house or something, and had a quick, stark jazz trumpet on it. Anybody else remember that one?

  • @dannystrat

YES and I was wondering when someone else was going to comment about it. It showed round-headed, faceless "dad", "mom" and boy and girl "kid" stick figures appearing inside a simple graphic frame house. The house and its round-head family residents were all luminescent animation like the logo work above. I STILL remember the music that accompanied it. It was five notes, then a sparkle sound. Yes I do remember that.

  • I was born in 1970 and grew up with the "Special Presentation" logo with the drums and fanfare. I don't remember the one of teh stick figures and the graphic house. Any chance you could get a hold of that and put it here for viewing? Anytime I heard the music from the above bumper, it was like, "It's on!" and my siblings and I would race into the living room. Good times.

  • Seeing this just made every special more...special. I wish they still did it, but I guess they could better use these few seconds for some extra advertising.

  • Amen

  • you always knew snoopy and charlie brown would soon follow when you heard that music lol.

  • the tune in the logo used to be on the old 1999/2000 homestar runner cartoons pretty cool eh!

  • That intro whould quiet down my house in 1 second! We were like Yaa! Frosty is coming on!

  • Yay, it's Christmas!

  • YES!I haven't heard that in about tewnty years!I used to love that intro too!It may seem incongruous to get excited about an intro but it sounded so cool!THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU!

  • Thank you for posting this! This was one of my favorite intros as a child.

  • Reminds me of high school football for some reason.

  • I used to flip out as a kid when I saw this! I knew something that I loved was about to be played. But there was one time CBS played this before something that wasn't Snoopy/Garfield/Frosty/etc. I felt so crushed!!!

  • Oh yah, I remember this one. When I first started playing French Horn, my Dad made me learn that. Two notes, whoopie, but it's a memory. I, too, was looking forward to the Charlie Brown X-Mas special. Cue the Piano.

  • chug chug chugguta chugguta chugguta booooop bap ba da boop BAP!

  • didn't they always show this before the muppets or was that another bumper?

  • Muppets Charlie Brown and Garfield

  • And don't forget Frosty and Rudolph. Such a great piece of nostalgia.

  • They would have shown it before ANY kind of TV special---cartoon, holiday, celebrity, sports, whatever. We just remember it before the holiday stuff 'cause that's all we would have been interested in back then. XD

  • Haha! Yeah good point! And now I think of it, I do actually remember running into the living room when I heard it and being totally disappointed with some boring adult garbage.

  • God I love this! The sound of excitement from a childhood in the 80s. Great to know other people get nostalgic about this too.

  • I almost just ran into my living room! TOTAL Goosebumps! For me, this meant "The Great Pumpkin" was about to start. You could see other holiday specials from time to time, but if you missed the "great pumpkin", that was it, show's over! Your sorry ass had to wait until next year! I'm so happy I'm not the only one who got this excited about 5 seconds of music.

  • and--cue the Charlie Brown Theme!

  • i miss this.

  • I remember this ID all too well it was being used in the 80's

  • CBS special presentation...... CANNON!!!

  • You know something, Marbles471, you're right. Although it DID end in 1992, they were still using it on some occasions, in other places.

  • Yes, I am serious! lol

  • i believe u!

    cool!

  • Yes way! I have seen an old tape from 1992 of this ident, and it still had this opening, which was not too long before they changed it.

  • r u serious??

  • Even later, actually. Maybe CBS changed the special presentation bumper for most purposes that year, but I know for a fact that when I tuned in to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in 1995, this one was there. They were leaving it in for some things even that late. That's not unheard of---some stations have done that. Perhaps out of carelessness more than anything else.

  • And this was used until 1992, believe it or not.

  • no way!!!!

  • Charlie Brown is on!!!!

  • OMG, totally. That's so funny. It makes me wanna pop open the Twinkies and sit down to watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"
