I know I'm going to get crucified for saying this, but unlike Sadiewhisper, I didn't find this documentary to be either interesting or informative and to call it enjoyable would certainly be a stretch. That being said, I am one of the diehard Sylvian fans that punked out some serious change for the deluxe edition because I was excited to support a musician that I love so dearly, along with everyone who worked on the album with him. Im still struggling with how I feel about Manafon and this
I don't know why but this film fascintaes me. There are millions of folks who can play in the accepted way, these guys are speaking in their own voices.
Its a hard listen...but some of my favourite albums have be a hard listen at first. Sylvian has never in my opinion since Japan made music for anything close to a commercial market, and I believe the day sof albumsuch as
I would just love to talk to these guys about music - doing something they all love - finding their own identity and being avant-garde... A million miles away from the puppets of X-Factor !!
"Blemish" was NOT bad. If you can't appreciate it, it does not mean it is bad. It means YOU are not able to hear the positive aspects in the music. "Blemish" tore apart what you knew of Sylvian and that probably confused you. Bad/Good? It worked great as a concept and remains a very strong work. Manafon sounds one or two steps sideways. Strange listening, but so deep it pays to submerge once in a while.
Sylvian's intent for commisioning the documentary was to formally introduce a few of the highly intelligent musicians working in the field of electro-acoustic improvisation who assisted in creating the foundation for Manafon. What one learns is their methods, processes and backgrounds. Not only is the DVD enjoyable, it is extremely interesting and informative. Sylvian's appearance was not necessary, as this is about the histories and philosophies of these particular musicians - not Manafon.
you know whats missing from this clip,DAVID SYLVIAN!!!!!!!!!!!
