This is one of the most interesting scenes of GG ever. It shows a total lack of maturity on Lorelai's side, almost like a fallback in personality to what she would have been like around the time she had Rory.

It's also one of the first scenes where the show dared to show a downside to the friends first-parent later strategy employed by Lorelai (later examples include Lorelai's fear of criticizing Rory in season 5): combined with a temporary lapse in maturity it can lead to crazy shit like this.

I miss Rory's voice from season one. It was so cool and commanding and cynical in a good way... it always reminded me of Christina Ricci's Wednesday form The Adams Family. But over time, somehow it slowly morphed and devolved until, finally, it was this high-pitched silly girly thing with no authority whatsoever.
