Homeboy totally blew the key change to "F", sounded like his throat was about to give out.
THe guitarist looked like he'd rather be fishing. I mean this is a 2-chord tune for the most part, doncha think they could've improvised on the solos ?
Have a heart. One day you'll be old too, still tryin to groove and the youngsters standin on the sidelines will laugh at you and say shit like look at that old dude tryin to get down!HAHAHA.Old happens.
Since ARS was partially made up of former Classics 4 members, it isn't surprising they would cover this song. Although Dennis Yost's lead vocal outshines this one, arrangement-wise I like this version better.
I'm listening to Coast right now and heard it too! I was looking for the video to send to my fiancee because I was just singing this song to her the other day when we went to Wal-Mart! Must be that "energy" that I'm tapping into.
'Spooky' was written by Mike Sharpe, J.R. Cobb, & Buddy Buie, and originally performed by Classics IV. Buddy Buie bacame manager for Atlanta Rhythm Section, and J.R. Cobb (formerly of Classics IV) reprised the song in 1979 with Atlanta Rhythm Section. (The term 'sampled' is inappropriate to describe recordings from this era, as there was no such technology at that time :)
a couple of guys in ars were in classicsiv, nix an buie, maybe, not sure, great writers, my friend sam who owns firehouse music, formerly keynote music was in this band, clasics, for a while,, conyers, ga..love ronnies singin, an barry on guitar especially, steve an justin greta guys, they always play somewhere cheaper than anyone, somehow, musically perfect..
yea, ive been going around for about 10 mins telling people my granfather wrote this song, and played it at the consert back in the late 90's,and recently, i think 2 years ago...
I saw the several times in the 70's, even at Road Atlanta and Chastain Park with the ASO. I met Paul Goddard one night at the bar in the Electric Ballroom, accross from the Fox, and he was so cool to just stand there and talk with me about music, bands, etc. Such a nice, unassuming guy. That left an impression on me that you could be in a successful band and still be a nice, humble Southern gentleman. Long live ARS!
This is about as bare bones as I'd ever want to see ARS. The ARS trademark sound was Barry Bailey's solo guitar & Ronnie Hammond's vocal ONLY, though J.R's rhythm & Dean's keys added a little to the mix. Everybody but Barry & Ronnie were easily replaceable. The lineup on other 2007 videos is a joke, with only keyboardist Dean Daughtry left.
Please never put drinks on your amps boys (these guys should know better !)............seen a bass player frazzled once when his beer fell over into his stack....not forgetting the mess it made of his rig !
Nice version of Spooky though - ARS took the old standard to new heights.....nice Les Paul.
Something tells me you're not very familiar with the ARS! Ronnie Hammond the lead vocalist and the keyboardist Dean Daughtry are also original members along with guitarist Barry Bailey.
The original singer was a guy from a Flordia group called the Roemans (His name was Laney, I think; been a long time). He died in a car crash and was replaced. Ronnie was not an original member. I saw them when they first got together, at a bar in Underground Atlanta. Basically, ARS was the group called The Candymen, who backed up Roy Orbison for a while, and were a very hot group. Cobb played with Dennis Yost and the Classics IV before joining ARS.
So, was there only one former member of the Classics IV in Atlanta Rhythm Section? I thought ARS was made up of remnants of the Classics IV. Both groups were from the Atlanta area, right?
Actually, Dean, the keyboard player for ARS, was a member of the Candymen and, though not an original member of the Classics IV, played with them briefly before ARS was formed. And I think the original singer for ARS was Laney Langford, though I couldn't swear to it. BTW, in the org. Classics Dennis played the drums, standing up, and it was a four piece group with the drums lined up at the front of the stage with the other three musicians.
I saw elsewhere in the comments that there were two members of Classics 4 (Cobb and Buie) who were later in ARS. Didn't say if they were original members of the former group. That's pretty interesting about Dennis and the drums. Guess they knew they had to do something about that. I never caught them on TV when I was a kid, so these videos are a first for me. Great group, with four pretty enduring hits.
Hey, thanks for the response. I saw the Roemans about a dozen times, and until he left to pursue a solo career ("Key Largo"), Bertie Higgins was the drummer (and a very boring one, LOL). After Birdie left I saw them once as a four piece group, without a front man. I still think Lanny was the lead guitar player. Someone below noted that Rodney Justo was the orginal singer for ARS, and Rodney was in the Roemans also, I thought as lead singer. Perhaps someone can clarify this for us.
Checking back. Rodney was the org. singer with the Candymen, not the Roemans, and Lanny Langford was the singer of the Roemans. The Roemans have a web page, as does Rodney Justo. The web is amazing.
Click my name and you will get all of the facts on The Roemans along with 2 video of their songs. I created a website for my husband, Joe Pappalardo, who was the bassist from the start until he had to leave due to the Vietnam War draft. Joe was replaced by Berry Oakley. Lanny Langford was the lead vocalist, Bertie was the drummer, Bob "Bo" Glover played lead guitar, Ronnie Swartzkopf played guitar. I did create a page on the website just for Lanny if you want to see more on him.
I went to the web page this morning. Great job, it brought back many memories. My band tried to copy the Roemans as closely as possible, LOL, so I spent a lot of time standing at the side of the stage watching them. What is Joe doing these days? I remember we were all shocked to see Barry Oakly -- the first honest-to-goodness hippie musician we'd ever seen -- show up in his place. Again, thanks for providing a great resource to music fans.
Also, regarding the comments about the quality of the "Spooky" update by ARS. It was pretty good. But the original was "Classic". In other words, hard to top.
In 1980 or 1981, ARS played "Japan Jam," and all-day outdoor concert in Tokyo. The headliner was Cheap Trick; ARS was No. 2. In my review, I said ARS stole the show, with the crowd demandig two encores, in no hurry to hear from Cheap Trick. I remember seeing Paul Goddard backstage afterward, and he seemed like a lost little kid. He was panicking over where he was supposed to catch the bus back to the hotel. Don't know if he's always like that, or if he was stoned :-)
In Paul Goddard's defense,I'd say feeling "lost in japan" would be a pretty frightening experience! I wonder are Paul,Ronnie, and Barry all still among the living? Anyone?
well ive known ronnie since i was born. my dad was the drummer for ARS for some time. his name is sean burke. and i can assure you that is 100% ronnie hammond
Spooky was a Top 10 hit in 1968 by the Classics IV, of which JR Cobb and Buddy Buie were members. The Classics IV had a few other hits, including two others with one word titles: Stormy and Traces.
Hello from down under. This is one of my favourtite all time tracks, done quite well live. 3 superb guitar solos and one on keyboard; vocals not too shabby either.
This, my friends, is what you see when you look up "southern rock" in the dictionary. These guys are the best, and wrote some of the tightest music of the 60's and 70's. They play this so well because, well, they wrote it! Who will post Alien? Doraville? Heck, I'll take anything.
Oh yeah Tarheel - ARS made over a dozen albums and 4 or 5 of them could qualify among the best that ever came out of the South, for my money. Some unforgettable live shows too. "Last night the Georgia Rhythm tore up another town!" The ARS were craftsmen.
it's Ronnie, but somewhat depressing to see this great band reduced to playing a tavern/small venue. I vividly recall the Champange Jam days when they could sell out an entire stadium, even if it was in Atlanta. Thanks for sharing this.
It's not sad at all.Years ago some of the original members tired of the road; had 'made it' & chose to settle down &just to do certain non-demanding gigs. I booked them mid90's &they packed out 10,000 for a festival. Ronnie has written so many songs that they are redone by various other famous artist.John Legend just redid "Stormy" into "Save Room" &it topped the charts. Buddy Buie &Ronnie's songs are here to stay long after they are gone.
Yeah, I guess what you're saying makes alot of sense. Many of the southern bands preferred smaller venues as I recall. I remember seeing Mother's Finest at Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom in the OLD underground Atlanta as well as The Allman Brothers, ARS, and many others. Those were "the good ole days" for certain.
Scarlet, sorry - Ronnie's not in this video, the singer is, I think Andy Anderson. He's known the original ARS from before the time they were a band. Ronnie is, fortunately, still alive just hasn't been with the band for a bit. Supposedly, he went on a "Voices of Classic Rock" tour and p.o.-d the rest of the band.
