@breezy5421, I wouldn't call RMS Titanic "beautiful". The hull was too large in comparison with the size of the superstructure and the smokestacks... they are just too big, typical for a steam ship.

If I had to name a ship that pleases my eye, I'd probably pick up NS Savannah despite the obvious lack of a smoke stack. Streamlined body combined with the traditional general cargo ship style. Too bad such design is rarely economically feasible...

@wingmanalive, actually just 700 gallons for the V12s and 930 gallons for the V16s, and that's at 100% MCR, something the ship almost never uses. The 46's are pretty efficient medium-speed engines, so I wouldn't call the ship's machinery gas-guzzling.

Back in its day nobody believed Titanic would sink, like this ship, it was bigger than anything that had gone before, lets not go down that road again! haha. Any ship can sink, at least people arnt as arogant as they were in 1912 and that shows just by how much attention has been payed with regards to the lifeboats, probably enough space for well over the amount of passengers, quite a contrast to Titanic!

it depends on what measurement of tonnage is used as to what size it is compared to the titanic.

225,000grt is a measurement of enclosed space, displacement tonnage is a better measurement as it is the amount of water the ship displaces as this is what it weighs.

In this measurement the titanic displaced just over 52,000 tons and the Oasis is an estimated 100,000tons, freedom of the seas approx 80,000tons,Qm2 76,000tons, So Titanic isn't much smaller considering it is nearly 100 years old

But then again the volume of the ship is, more or less, propotional to the space the passengers can experience and explore. Therefore I think it describes the size of the ship (at least what passengers can perceive) better than the displacement which might not be comparable when taking into consideration the age difference of the ships (new technology etc.).

Still, I support your way of using displacement and perhaps other main dimensions especially when comparing ships of different type.

Also, when you think about it, RMS Titanic was strictly divided to different classes. So, even if you travelled in the first class, the actual area of ship in which you could roam around was rather limited, as you (probably) weren't allowed to 2nd and 3rd class spaces. In Oasis of the Seas every public place is open to everyone as there probably are no "1st class only" staterooms, restaurants etc.

I know what you mean and agree with you from a passenger point of view it is alot bigger than titanic as they weren't allowed into other classes but as for size and weight it isn't 5 times heavier thats the point i was trying to make, it is less than twice the weight, they would be better saying 5 times the volume which is what it is. too many different uses for tonnage in shipping.

@BIOSHOCKFOXX The Oasis is over 220,000 gross tons while the Titanic was 46,000 gross tons so yes the Oasis IS 5 times bigger than the Titanic. The Titanic is an OOOOLD ship and is only the size of a small modern cruise ship. The average size of a modern cruise ship is 100,000 gross tons.
